A very attractive and much sought-after mid-19th century map of British Guyana engraved by John Rapkin and published in The Illustrated Atlas and Modern History of the World, the famous atlas produced by John Tallis Junior (1817-1876) between 1845 and 1851. Tallis’s maps are instantly recognizable by the intricate borders and fine engraved vignettes showing local scenes, local people and local flora and fauna.

The map of British Guyana contains four such vignettes including a splendid view of Georgetown from the sea and a fifth engraving of what appears to be a coin or medallion showing a three-masted ship in full sail. Good overall condition apart from a 2 cm horizontal tear (repaired with archival tape) along the centre-fold, some browning along the edges of the paper and an uneven left-hand margin where the map has been excised from the atlas. Price $90.
