History of rumba• The Catalan rumba (rumba catalana) is a musicla genre that developed

in Barcelona's Romani community beginning in the 1950s. Its rhythms are derived from the flamenco rumba, with influences from Cuban music and rock and roll.

• The Catalan rumba originated in the Catalan Romani communities in Gràcia, calle de la Cera del Raval, and Hostafrancs neighbourhoods. The Romani community in those neighbourhoods is long-established and Catalan-speaking.

• During recent yearsdifferent bands have been formed in Catalonia which have the rumba as a musical base merged with other modern styles. Bands like Gertrude, Meztuca, Ojos de Brujo, Estopa, Rufino and Don Domingo. The appearance of Joan Garriga with his new band, The Junior Kung-Search, and other small groups have popularized the Rumba Catalan, especially among young people.

• Nowadays, the young people of Barcelona, have the district of Gràcia like a centre to party. All Fridays and Saturdays, a lot of people come to listen to music and dance with this kind of music, which has moved a lot of young people these three or four lasts years.

Groups of Rumba• “El Pescaílla” was a singer and a guitarist who played Spanish

Ten friends of Barcelona began practising this genre, combining it with rock instruments and attitude. • La Troba Kung-Fú: is a group of Catalan music After four concerts, they began to record songs and upload them to their site every 15 days. They have also performed at Lincoln Center in New York.

• PERET:Is one of the most important Catalan groups of rumba. It started this type of music at the same time as rock was becoming very famous. They stopped playing in the 80’s to develop religious tasks. They reappeared in the 90’s with different artists. They participated in different festivals like “Els Jocs Olímpics” in Barcelona.
