The shipment Is one of the largest ever sent from Los Angeles chapter and its branches. Included In the consignment were eight layettes, 16 hospita coats, 26 sweaters and 15 wool dresses from the Torranec branch of the Red Cross, made by local women under direction of Mrs. Flora Wrlght, local. Red Cross chairman. This material was consigned to England, The Netherlands and China, and is a portion of tho quarterly quota assigned. to the chapter by national headquarters In Washington, according to Gurncy Newlin, Chapter Chair- man. All of the garments are absolutely new and made from materials purchased t h r o-u g h monies appropriated by Con- gress. They were made by hundreds of loyal volunteer workers In units and auxiliaries throughout the county. In the shipment were 5,674 articles of clothing for the British and 125 dresses marked for the Netherlands. These will be placed on British vessels in New York for the Atlantic crossing. Fewer Forest Fires In 1940 '

SACRAMENTO. (UP) The year 1940 saw fewer forest fires in California than in recent years, the division of forestry reported today.

Up to December 1, only 152,- 565 acres of timber, brush, grass, hay and grain were burned with 501,141 acres in 19S9 and 226,624 in 1938.

Damage of $2,546,714 was al­ most half that of 1939 and lower than 1938's $286,712. The number of forest fires dropped from 5,339 to 4,263.
