Playing Exams There will be 3 playing exams in which the student will demonstrate facility on the instrument. Students will demonstrate fingering facility by playing one octave major scales up to 3 sharps and 4 flats. (Concert Keys of Bb, Eb, F & Ab) Tests will also include sight-reading and pedagogical questions related to the applicable instrument.

Notebook All students enrolled in this course are required to develop a notebook. In the notebook you will keep handouts, articles, exercises, assignments, tests, etc. that will serve as useful resources to you in your teaching. Make it neat and thorough: you will be glad you did in a few years!! Your notebook should be a three ring binder (loose leaf). Later on, you will want to add dividers. You should plan to get one with relatively large rings (2-3 inches), so that you can continue to add elements to it for the rest of your career. The notebook will be evaluated for a grade only once: at the end of the semester.

Included in the Notebook:

Observation Form and Reflection UVM requires 6 hours of observation (3 at the elementary K-6 level, and 3 at the secondary 7-12 level) during each of the Methods courses. You can either observe woodwind lessons, or observe woodwinds in the context of band or orchestra rehearsals. These forms are to be completed and turned in. They will be placed in your student file by Patricia Riley [email protected] at the end of the course.

Method Book Evaluation

Chose one woodwind instrument and complete evaluation forms for three different publishers.

Teaching Assignment

One teaching assignment will be required of each student. This entails teaching a one-half hour lesson to a NON-WOODWIND student. A brief paper detailing the teaching experience will be expected after the teaching session. In the paper you should discuss what happened in the lesson (i.e., How did the student grasp concepts? What was difficult for the student to achieve? What was difficult to teach? What techniques did you use to teach? Were the results what you expected?) Papers must be typed, double spaced and between 3-5 paragraphs.
