But the Baraboo senior pulled it off, claiming the Division 1 shot put title with a school-record ty- ing throw of 47 feet, 8 inches at the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association state track and field meet at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse on Sat- urday. “I’m really excited, what a great way to go out,” Schae- fer said after stepping off the podium Saturday. “I think it makes all the hard work worth it. ... To work all season, work through some not so great throws and come back and end up where the goal was at the beginning is the right way to go out I think.”Schaefer, who won the discus with a toss of 163-08 on day one of the meet, joined Hartford Union’s Sam Noenning as the only Wisconsin athletes in the last seven years to win both Division 1 girls’ throwing events in the same year. The shot put outcome was up in the air until the very last throw. Seeded first entering the day, Schaefer set the tone with a toss of 45-05.25 on her opening effort. That mark held until Ash- waubenon senior Erin Dunning, the defending state champion, tossed her fifth attempt 45-08.5 to overtake first place. Schaefer, who was the run- ner-up to Dunning last season, couldn’t surpass that with her fifth throw, and Dunning ex- tended her lead with a mark of 47-03.25 in her sixth and final attempt. Schaefer got set for the final throw of her high school career, needing to approach her per- sonal best in order to unseat the defending champion. “We knew what we needed to fix, so I was confident going into that last one,” Schaefer said. “I’ve been in that situation a few times before, so thankfully I was kind of mentally prepared for that situation. I was just thinking about what I needed to do to get a nice throw out there.” She did so and then some, matching her own school record with a throw of 47-08 to win her first shot put championship, and the third overall state title in her fourth trip to La Crosse. “After my fifth throw, we were like ‘OK, my left arm is drop- ping, it’s got to be level,’ so we were doing some spins in the extra circle,” said Schaefer, who reached the podium six times in four years. “We got it figured out, it was feeling good. I knew this was what I needed to do to have a great throw. Then I just brought some adrenaline, had to do what I needed to do and I got it done today.” Schaefer also took pride in competing against someone like Dunning, as the two have pushed each other throughout their high school careers.
