Welcome to the 15th Annual Bar 3R Limousin Bull Sale. The cattle industry is currently undergoing some very hard times and as producers we all need to be greatly concerned about the liquidation of our Canadian cow herd. The good news is that if we all can get through the next few years we are sure to be greatly rewarded. There is no better time to reload and refuel our livestock operations so we are ready for the years ahead because Beef is our Business.

This year we have a powerful group of yearling and coming 2-year-old bulls that can make a differ-ence in your calf crop. All of the coming 2-year-olds are from our late calving group and have never been offered for sale before. All bulls are virgin bulls, so buy with confidence.

We welcome your evaluation of the sale offering either at the farm or on sale day. If you are unable to attend the sale, take advantage of our sight-unseen purchase program. Just call or come to the farm in advance so we can discuss your needs and develop a budget. As always, satisfaction is guaranteed.

Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs) are used to compare the genetic merit of animals in various traits. An EPD pre-dicts the difference in performance of future offspring of a parent, as compared to progeny from other parents, when each are bred to mates of equal value.

Remember, the observed performance of an animal is determined by both genetics and environment, and EPDs only predict differences due to genes passed on from par-ent to offspring.

Birth Weight (BW)Birth weight has been identified as the single most influ-ential factor contributing to calving difficulty. In studies of birth weight data, birth weight EPDs have been shown to be the single most accurate genetic predictor of calf birth weight. BW is expressed in pounds of calf at birth and a low-er number is desirable.

Weaning Weight (WW) and Yearling Weight (YW)EPDs are expressed as the added pounds of weaning and yearling weight of offspring.

Milking Ability (MA)A sire’s milk EPD is expressed as the additional pounds of weaning weight of calves from daughters (grandprogeny of sire), due to genes for milk passed on from the sire to his daughters. Similarly, a dam’s milk EPD indicates added pounds of weaning weight of calves from her daughters (grandprogeny of dam), due to genes for milk the daugh-ters inherited from the dam.

Scrotal Circumference (SC)Scrotal circumference has been found to be a good indicator of age at puberty, and is a highly heritable trait. Expressed in centimeters with higher values indicating larger yearling scrotal circumference of sons.

EPD’sexplained

There are many theories on how cattle should perform, some sound and some not so sound.

The consumer is demanding lean, tasty, tender beef at an inexpensive price. How do we produce this? That is the question! Tender meat comes from young animals, so we have to have fast growing animals that can grade and weigh between 1,250-1,350 pounds at 13-14 months of age.

The bulls that sire carcasses like this need to have explosive growth and fleshing abilites. They also have high metabo-lism so they may utilize and convert feed when exposed to it. As a result, these young bulls are still growing fast at 13 to 14 months old when they are turned out to breed. They can-not get enough feed to maintain their growth and muscle mass and breed cows at the same time. Something has to give. These young bulls will not stop breeding, and likely their skeletal growth will not stop. The result is often a rapid drop in condition of the yearling bull.

A slower-growing bull can maintain himself better, but his offspring will not convert feed well and will reach market at a later age, possible adding a little to the toughness of the meat. There can be a fine line in these genetics and we must guard against the hard-doing animals. However, after breeding season, the majority of these young bulls should be put on good feed to regain their body mass. If they can do this, it is an indication that they are easy-doing cattle.

When the breeding season is completed, these good year-ling bulls that have good feed conversion and growth rates must be exposed to feed that compliments their rapid rate of gain to get in acceptable condition for winter.

This is why these young bulls should not have to compete at the feed bunk with older herd bulls. If you feed all the bulls with enough energy and protein for the young bulls, the old bulls may become too fat by spring.

The best feed for yearling bulls is a high-quality hay and 1.5% of his body weight of a balanced grain or pellet ration. That means a 1,450-pound bull needs free-choice, high-quality hay and approximately 15-20 pounds of a balanced ration.

A young bull looked after in his first year could possibly give one or two more years as a breeding bull and that would make those few extra dollars to feed him properly look pretty cheap.

Daryl and Sharon Bullock of Czar, Alberta have always used Limousin bulls, but what sets Bar 3R cattle apart is their temperament.

“We’re happy with the bulls,” says Sharon. “They are quiet

and easy to handle.” Bullock Ranches keeps the top 20% of the females for re-

placements and sells the rest of their calves in the fall. What attracted them to Limousin to begin with was calving ease for their 200-head commercial herd.

“The calves come out easy, get up and are ready to suck,”

says Sharon. “We don¹t have many problems. They are go getters.”

After more than ten years using Bar 3R bulls, the Bullocks

appreciate the people as much as the cattle. “Ken and Kevin are good to deal with and they know

RanchingConners Bros. is a family owned ranch in the short grass

country east of Hanna. Darryl along with his wife and two (soon to be three) kids; his brother Bryon, wife and two kids and their mother are all active in the operation. They have done it all in the cattle business. With 500 cows at Youngstown and 1,000 grass yearlings at a satellite ranch in Yorkton, Saskatchewan, Connors’ know what works.

Conners run a low cost, low maintenance cowherd consist-

ing of 500 Angus-cross cows. “Our cows are expected to work for us not us for them,” explains Darryl.

They have been using Limousin bulls on the main cowherd

for 25 years and have had Bar 3R bulls as part of their bull battery for the past 12 years.

Conners have experienced that Limousin-cross calves are heavily sought by Alberta feedlots, as well as feeders in both Ontario and Quebec. The added competition often demands a premium they believe does get back to the cow/calf producer.

“We have found that by cross breeding our Angus cows

with Limousin bulls we have gained an advantage right through from birth to finish,” says Darryl. The Limousin calves are expected to come on their own beginning in mid-April, and have consistently lighter birth weights and are more vigorous at birth than other exotic-cross calves. Conners’ often sell a liner load of top end 600-weight steers in the fall right off the cow if the market demands it.

“We find that Limousin bulls add consistency to the calf

crop,” says Darryl. “It makes a person pretty proud to have a liner load of steers go through the ring in three bunches.

“Cross breeding Angus cows with Limousin bulls consis-

tently adds 50-75 lbs. to our calves every fall,” notes Darryl. “In today’s industry, cow/calf operators need to take advantage of every tool available to them.”

Conners’ have also seen that Limousin-cross calves in the

feedlot at home or on grass “always seem to just do a little better than the rest of the calves.” When they have finished their own yearlings the cattle have yielded 62-64% with very good feed conversion ratios.

“We find dealing with the Rea’s that we’re dealing with

ordinary guys, raising real good bulls with the commercial cattleman always kept in mind,” says Darryl. “Whether you buy the most expensive bull or the last bull of the sale, they will all do a real good job.

“The Reas’ word is as good as their bulls. That goes a long

way in today’s industry.”
