Colossians 3:1 says: Since then you have been raisedwith Christ, set your hearts on things above where Christis seated at the right hand of God the Father.

Before us today is the task of understanding the sitting

Christ in order to learn and worship Christ more fully. We understand sitting as a leisurely activity to rest ourtired bodies, or to watch television, or to do nothing.Biblically, however, sitting is a theological term that is

charged to carry deep mean-ing. It is associated with thenotion of rest, of commu-nity. After God nished thetask of creating the world, for example, we nd himresting the rest of admiringthe creation and ruling overit. The blessed man does notsit in the seat of scoers. Hedoes not keep the companyof scoers and adopt theirways. The Scribes andteachers of the law sit ina posture of unbelief, anddeance despite the glaringevidence of the power and

authority of the Son of Manto forgive sins, which they knew that God alone could do(Mark 2:6).

Jesus (The One who ascended in his resurrected body)

sits to rule with the Father having ended the enmity thatexisted between God and Man. He sits not from tired-ness but to rest the rest of King happy to rule. Those whobelong to him need no longer worry about the awfulultimate penalty of sin. He sits; he inaugurates the newphase of his work in the newly reestablished kingdomof God on earth as in heaven. With reconciliation andforgiveness under his belt, he sits in triumph over death. He sits as ruler of the universe.

Hebrews author says: When he had made purication[by the shedding of his blood] for sins, he sat down atthe right hand of the Majesty on high (1:3, NRSV).

But is there more to this sitting of Christ? Look full inhis wonderful face to discover that he neither slumbersnor sleeps. He sits to pray. He sits as the High Priest ofGod sits in order to make intercession for the sheep ofhis pasture. He entered the Holy of Holies, he took hisrightful place to complete the healing of the nations. Letour prayers mingle with his.

We are on the doorstep of our state convention meet-ing. New Covenant Baptist Church is the site of thisyears annual meeting on October 14th -15th. Dr. AlanBranch from Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminarywill be a Bible Study leader and Dr. Jason Allen,President of the seminary will be our keynote speaker.I am looking forward to seeing you there.

I have heard some presenters refer to the GreatCommission descriptors, (Jerusalem, Judea, Samariaand the ends of the earth) as geographic locationsand/or as people group identifiers. For example, ageographic identifier for Judea would be my state orregion. A people group identifier for Judea would bepeople who are similar to me but may not be in myimmediate proximity. This could be viewed as some-

thing similar to our two state convention.

Judea represents one part of the Great Commissionsdirectives. Judea is not be seen as more importantthan Jerusalem, Samaria or the ends of the earth. Judeafor us represents approximately 170,000 square milesand five million people living on the Great Plains. TheNorth American Mission Board indicates that morethan 3.3 million of the five are without any kind of ameaningful relationship with Christ.

The missional task before us is formidable. OurJudea is filled with needs and the Father is at workthroughout our region. With eyes of faith our onlyresponse to Him is obedience.

I want to leave you with a challenge. One of ournational mission partners has redirected $147,000 of ourjoint budget. Please do not hear me say they have elim-inated those dollars; they have redirected those dollarsto church planting. Unfortunately, previously by agree-

ment with the agency, we were using those dollars for

Christ is seated. Speaking to the church as a group (thewhole passage is plural) Paul asks them to seek the seat -ed Christ, to look for him, to gaze at him. Seek him withall your heart and you will nd him. He is the ever-readyPriest. Like the priest Eli, he, our High Priest, awaits thebroken Hannahs and the disillusioned Jobs of thisworld to assure them that their vows and prayers are be-

ing heard. But unlike Eli he judges not the troubled soulswho seek him earnestly. This regally exalted and seated Christ is alone worthy

of our absolute admiration. To come before him with amere glance is to insult his Majesty. To come with half-hearted devotion is to pay lip service to a King who rulesover all kings. To pass by without our pleading prayersand bowing of knees is to neglect the Maker of heavenand earth. This seated Christ is capable of more than wecan ask or think to ask. Ask for little, he grants much.Humble yourself, he honors and lifts you up. Come tothe Seated One, he will ll your cup with goodness andmercy to overow capacity. Ask, seek, and knock. Hell

translate to his Father and Our Father the moaning ofearth to ll the heavens with celestial harmony. Hisanswer will be in heavenly currency, cashable in everycountry, for every need.

Because he sits where he sits no one can condemn us.It is Christ Jesus, who dies, yes, who was raised, who isat the right hand of God, who indeed intercedes for us(Romans 8:34 NRSV).

Ask the easy ask. Ask the impossible ask. Ask left andright, ask without shame. Like this:

With so much left to do, why sit, O Christ?

Life is lled with guns and warChildren die by disease and abuse

Why allow more? Why sit, O Christ?Chemicals burn their innocence,Sear their psyche. Why sit, O Christ?Men speak ill of you,Maiming, killing, and scarring

Some do in your nameWhy sit, O Christ?

In rooms plush with greed and deceitThe rich and powerfulDevise schemesTo dethrone the king of glory. Why sit, O Christ?

I sit, O man, I sit not the seating of leisureI sit with-an-ever-watchful-gaze.

With my blood I puriedI sit with Majesty on High.I sit, Son of Man, enthronedI sit forgiveness to bestowI sit to rule, to sway,To advocate, to plead, to whisper, to pray.

Join me in learning Jesus. Let not my ight be solobefore the throne room of Majesty. Pray with the Son ofGod who loved us and gave himself for us. No longeralone in prayer. Our partner God sits in readiness tointercede. To know him, to love him, to learn him, liftyour burdens to the heaven where our brother, our lover,

the author of life, sits enthroned for ever interceding forhis beloved.

town and country (rural)strategy, for associationalassistance and for churchhealth. At this point, ifwe are to continue theseministries we must comeup with our own resources.I think these ministriesare critical to our overallmission strategy. I wouldlike to challenge you andyour church to considerincreasing your gifts tothe Cooperative Programby a half of percent or to awhole percent. By doing so we could easily care for thisshortfall. I do appreciate your prayerful consideration

    in this matter.

    Sharing & Strengthening

    3

    OCTOBER

    2013

By Jon SappKNCSB State Director of EvangelismE-mail: [email protected]

Without fail, our celebration was the same year afteryear. The excitement around the table, the dust in the

air and the long hours of work all resulted in smilesand planning for this years event. I am talkingabout the end of wheat harvest and the resulting cel-ebration I enjoyed growing up in western Kansas.

One of the benefits of living on the farm was gettingin on the harvest and all that goes with it. While wedidnt talk about all the work it took to get ready forharvest, it captivated much of our year. Before the har-vest came in, someone had to invest hours, days andweeks of work. The summer fallow was prepared forplanting. The drill was cleaned and the seed wheat waspurchased. We spent hours sowing the wheat, and then

we waited. We prayed for rain and watched how thecrop was coming along month after month.

Then in early summer, the wheat was up and thegolden waves of grain were a reality out in the field.I will guarantee you, my father was watching for the

    Gods Plan for Sharing

    Jon Sapp

harvest. The combine was started and we made sure itwas ready to cut. And then it happened, the first testcut was made to see if the wheat was dry enough toplace in the grain bin. All of this was preparing for har-

vest.Jesus wanted the disciples, and all of us for that mat-ter, to discover the work of the harvest. In John 4 hebrought His harvest into clear view for the disciples.Jesus clarifies with the following sentence, Dont yousay, There are still four more months, then comes theharvest? Listen to what Im telling you: Open youreyes and look at the fields, for they are ready for har-vest. John 4:32. He wanted to capture the disciplesattention as he pointed to the members of the villagewalking out to see him at the local well. He was excitedabout the harvest. It was time to work and he was

inviting the disciples to join Him.As we all think about sharing our faith, the focus

upon the upcoming harvest should encourage us. Jesushad just completed an important conversation witha woman getting water at the well. He informed the

disciples, The reaper isalready receiving pay andgathering fruit for eternallife, so the sower and reapercan rejoice together. John4:36 (HCSB)

Receiving pay and gath-ering fruit for eternal life iswhat Jesus wanted the dis-ciples to catch as the crowdwas walking toward thewell. This event remindedme of the excitement of thewheat harvest in westernKansas. Jesus invited the

disciples to join Him and take part in the excitementand reward of the season as they participated with himworking the harvest among the locals from the village.

I have mentioned before, the four mile-markers of

evangelism. These four Prayer, Equipping, Sowingand Harvest summarize elements of our makingChrist known. I havent talked enough of the Harvest. It was important for Jesus as He taught the disciplesabout working with those coming from the village. Iwant to catch the same vision and excitement for thisimportant aspect of evangelism.

One of the methods we use for harvest celebration inthe church is baptism. The meaning, method and modeof baptism have been discussed in other areas. I wantto remind us to make baptism an important feature of

the celebration of our faith. Churches can make this actof obedience and identification a celebration. This sum-mer I learned of several churches turning their bap-tism into a community event at a park or lake. I haveseen videos of kids playing with friends and gatheredaround tables enjoying the pot luck meal. Making abig deal out of this event reminds me of what Jesuswas trying to teach the disciples.

As you are looking out on the fields of your harvest, what plans are you making for the celebration of newlife and the beginning of a young disciples life longwalk of obedience? I would hope our baptism events

have a celebratory tone in the event. In doing this,I believe we are all living out one of the importantaspects of Gods Plan for Sharing.

Reaching the nations seem overwhelming to you? Whatabout living like a missionary in your zip code? And whatif every Christ follower lived like that?

Reach the nations? Done! This does not require a new program at church, it

requires the church be intentional in their everyday, ordinary life- your sleeping, eating, going to work (school),and walking around life. (Romans 12:1 & 2 The Message)

Know your neighbors, become a regular at a coee shop, grocery store, gym, invite non-believing co-workers tolunch, volunteer in civic organizations. Dont just wear thescriptures on the back of your t-shirts, be Gods hands andfeet in your neighborhood.

Dont get caught up in comfort. Be intentional!

Does anxiety ever just appear in your life with no warn-ing? Does fear show its ugly head? And what about apathy?

These are only three of the pack of emotions that suddenlyappeared out of nowhere in my mind a few months ago.

The summer had been full of travel, seeing family, lots ofrest, and wonderful quiet time with God. About two hoursthis side of the Kansas state line, I was overcome by oneemotion after another. So where did all of this come from? For heavens sake, Id just returned from the Billy GrahamTraining Center!

School began almost immediately after my return. So therst day, as I was preparing for in-service training, after my

quiet time, I turned to some music for inspiration to encour-age me. One line from this song stuck in my head all day, all week, and into thenext week.

Whatevers in front of me, I choose to sing, Hallelujah.Wow- I was so thankful for those words of encouragement, which served to be a

reminder to me that He is in control. I got to the place where I could honestly singthat and mean it.

I KNOW Im not alone here. You, my sisters in the Lord, have shared with mefrom time to time, situations and emotions you have had to deal with. Thank-

fully, our God is so faithful throughout His word to encourage us.Psalm 125: 1 says,

Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion, which cannot be shaken butendures forever.Lets hold onto that! HE is our rock!Oh, Im thankful for His work in my heart. Praise His name!Praying for you His many blessings,[email protected]
