good like medicine”

EASTER DECORATIONS

Our thanks to the Page, Doyle and Freeman families for arranging the flowers around the cross on Easter weekend. Thanks also to those who provided the beautiful plants in memory of their loved ones.

As we truly turn the corner into springtime, we look forward to the opportunities we have to meet

together for worship during the month. The Pastor will continue the message series on “Ground

Rules” throughout the month, but we also have a Guest Speaker on May 14th. Fiona Kwok, who

along with her husband Conrad serve Canadian Baptist Ministries in Northern Thailand, will be our

guest speaker. As usual, our musicians, under the leadership of Ian McGregor Smith, will lead us

in that part of our worship. May the Lord continue to bless us as we gather together for worship!

Congratulations to the Doyles

Macy Doyle Heather and I are proud to boast about Macy who attended on Friday March 24, 2017 with her teammates from Riverside High School, the South-Western Ontario High School Gymnastics competition held at the Central Park Athletics, Winstars facilities.

The Riverside High School team finished first overall and Macy contributed by placing first overall for level 1 Beam and Floor skills. Macy also placed third in the uneven bar skill.

Macy and her teammates participated at the Ontario Federation of School Athletics Associations Gymnastics competition on April 10 and 11, 2017 in Belleville Ontario. Macy and Carson also competed with the Riverside High School swim team that placed 2nd overall at OFSAA earlier in March of this year.

Carson Doyle We are also excited for Carson who traveled to France and Belgium on April 7, 2017 and returned home April 14, 2017. Carson visited Vimy Ridge during the 100th year anniversary of the First World War and Vimy Ridge Battle. The decades since the Battle of Vimy Ridge have slipped by, but the legacy of the Canadians who accomplished so much in that important First World War battle lives on.

Some say that Canada came of age as a country on those harsh April days in 1917. Carson’s passion for History has fueled his two-year savings plan to attend this historical site. He, along with many other local and Canadian students, were part of the estimated 100,000 expected to gather and place 3,598 candles in remembrance of the Canadian lives lost in the battle.

The Battle of Vimy Ridge began on Easter Monday, April 9, 1917. Regiments from coast to coast saw action together in a distinctly Canadian triumph, helping create a new and stronger sense of Canadian identity in our country. Canada’s military achievements during the war raised our international stature and helped earn us a separate signature on the Treaty of Versailles that ended the First World War. (Ed. Note) Congratulations from the Banwell Family

AGE UNLIMITED “Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of one of his saints.” Psalm 116:15 The life story of each individual has a begin-ning, middle and end. On Wednesday, May 10th, our Age Unlimited Fellowship will focus on the end of our incredible journey. Age Unlimited is the Senior’s Ministry of Banwell. We will meet in the Chapel Room at 11:00 a.m. Henry Nurse, coordinator of the group, welcomes us. Dr. Moir has our opening prayer. We sing our favourite hymns and have a devotional thought. We will have a solo by Cheryl Willis. As a memo-rial tribute to her mother, Cheryl Willis, will sing the most beautiful rendition of “I’ll Never Walk Alone”. She will be accompanied by Donna Wilcox on the piano. Our special guest speaker Stacy from Walter D. Kelly Funeral Home will be introduced by Tom Holmes. Our speaker will outline avail-able options that we can make in the pre-planning for our end of the journey. At the time of death, this will allow your wishes to be carried out and reduce your loved ones anxieties. Invite a friend to share this in-formative information. Claude Daniels will offer grace before our luncheon. This is planned, purchased and prepared by our hostesses: Yvonne Eberle, Penny Bain, Madelon Kidd, Pam Beemer, Dorothy Allan and Carol Middaugh. To cov-er food costs, we ask for a freewill offering. “Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain a heart of wisdom”. Psalm 90:12. Henry Nurse, Coordinator Submitted by Joan Fulmer

FACES IN THE CROWD The sympathy of the congregation is ex-tended to Dan and Brigitte Laskowski upon the passing of Dan’s mother Shirley on April 1st; and to Wayne and Janet Parson’s upon the passing of her uncle Tom Murray on April 11th in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE JOURNEY During abundant living of eight decades, I have experienced fabulous family, fantastic friends, edu-cational experiences, challenging careers, terrific travel and many opportunities in the Lord’s church work. These are the highlights of an incredible journey of: JOAN MARIE WARWICK FULMER My parents Ruby and Jack Warwick had three sons - Russell, Lloyd and Lyle and were thrilled to have a girl. Two years later, I had a sister. During the Depression, our family moved from Leaming-ton to Windsor. My mother was devoted to her children. We were active in Sunday school, Explor-ers, and C.G.I.T. and youth activities at Ottawa United Church on Lincoln Road (now Emmanuel). John Campbell was my elementary school. On a May evening in 1939, thousands of children waved their Union Jack flags and cheered as the train came into the C.N. station carrying King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. During the war years, we faithfully did household and garden chores to earn 25 cents to purchase war stamps to fill our $10.00 booklets. World War II ended prior to graduation. We had a reception, refreshments and dancing to a live band after the ceremony. Five years at Kennedy Collegiate were enjoyable. I worked on the Kennedy yearbook; attended all football games in the stadium and basketball in the gym. In Grade 13, each student had an aptitude test and appointment with the guidance counsellor. I had planned to be a teacher like my oldest brother. My marks were better in the sciences than Math. He recommended a nursing career would be the best choice. (Career for girls were limited in 1949). A classmate and I were interviewed for Nurses training at Grace Hospital. We had a wonderful group of students in our residence. We attended classes, and worked on the wards caring for chil-dren, medical patients, post-surgical, O.R., maternity, newborn nursery and case room. We set up the delivery room and it was a joy to participate at a newborn delivery and hear the first cry as the infant began their incredible life journeys. I also spent 3 months in Ontario Hospital, London learning about care for psychiatric patients. On the evening of graduation, we were bused to the Windsor arena. We marched in as the Salvation Army Band played “Montreal Citadel”. Following the cere-monies receiving diploma and Grace Pin, I was presented with a bursary by the Ladies Auxiliary of Grace Hospital to take a C.I.N. program at the University of Western Ontario, London. Following graduation ceremonies, the love of my life presented me with an engagement ring. In June 1953, I was interviewed for church membership, and baptized by Rev. Dr. Harry R. Nobles who performed our marriage in October. Life was wonderful: a marvelous marriage, a challenging career as a Grace Clinical Instructor in Nursing and a regular paycheck. We were blessed with three adorable babies: Bill (now lives in Edmonton), Elizabeth (who was born with a heart abnormality, died in 1999) and Dana. Following illness and sudden death of my husband, several Grace graduates advised me to go to University. One said we need experienced, mature nurses in Public Health. I took a nursing re-fresher course, began part-time employment at Met Hospital and in September began four years at the University of Windsor. Graduation was held on Saturday and Monday, June 5, 1967 I com-menced a 29.5-year career as a Public Health Nurse with a Bachelor of Science Degree (B. Sc. N.) with a major in Public Health Nursing. I was a dedicated school nurse, devoted district nurse: Met. Hospital liaison for cardiac, maternal-child, and psychiatric home visit referrals. In 1990, Eleanor Kaplan, the Ontario Minister of Health initiated a new Seniors Program. Laura Ferguson became Program Manager and I was given health-counselling assignments at the Goyeau Street Senior Citi-zen Centre, two Windsor Housing Authority Buildings, home visits and Downtown Mission.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE JOURNEY (Cont’d) We worked with the Council on aging and participated in two Senior Expo Fairs held at Caboto Club. Our team designed a “Tree of Life” backdrop where the branches indicated the health Unit Divisions. Thousands of people commented on our display in a long tent with other community agencies when the exhibit was held at the Plowing Match held in the county.

During my employment, I had a month vacation and we travelled extensively. Two Expos – Montre-al 1967, Vancouver 1986. Western Canada: parade and Calgary Stampede, Banff and Columbia Ice fields, Vancouver, Butchart Gardens, California: recently opened magic Kingdom at Disneyland. We were thrilled by its train and rides of the Jungle Cruise, Haunted Mansion, and the dolls of the ride ”It’s a Small World”. We visited Yellowstone National Park; saw Old Faithful and Mount Rushmore in South Dakota. We had Merry Christmas holidays in Florida, tour of Key West Naval Station; saw the Orange Bowl Pa-rade in Miami, Cape Kennedy bus tour to see the V.A.B. (Vehicle Assembly Building) and launch Pad 39. We enjoyed Disney World and the Countries at E.P.C.O.T. and an America East Coast to Colonial Williamsburg. For my 60

th birthday, we went to Hawaii to see the Arizona memorial and

take a week cruise with ports of call at all the islands. We had a three-week tour of the U.K. We en-joyed a London bus tour with stops at St. Paul’s cathedral and saw tombs of historic people includ-ing Lord Nelson and Florence Nightingale. We toured the Tower of London and saw the crown jew-els. We had a tour inside Buckingham Palace. We saw the White cliffs of Dover, Roman Baths, Wales, the Lake District and our Heritage tour ended in Edinburgh, Scotland at the best military ta-too held in the grounds of Edinburgh Castle. We went to Southern California Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena. We saw the Grand Canyon, Los Vegas and toured Hoover Dam. We had many trips to Toronto and Niagara Falls. In retirement, I attended a seven-year program at Bible Study Fellowship. The teachers were mar-velous: Maisy Murella, Betty Leslie, Lorrie Bateman, Mary Hill, Helen Palmer, Edna Reynolds, Kay Brown and Dorothy Radin. At Temple Baptist, I was a Mission Band and Explorer Assistant, a Sunday school teacher, Sunday School Superintendent, and a deacon. I was in charge of Christian Education and arranged a youth overnight and a congregation “Day Away” at Camp Henry in Point Pelee National Park. The Hospi-tality Committee prepared a hearty breakfast for the teens and a delicious lunch. For 40 years, I attended “Happy Hearts”. The group had many film fundraisers including pancake supper, Palm Sunday hot-cross buns, Mother and Daughter banquets, rummage sales, baked goods and craft sales. On the final Sunday at Temple, I worked in the nursery. We packed all the toys, stripped the cribs and packed bedding and cleaning supplies in boxes. On Saturday, fresh bedding and toys were cleaned for the nursery at Banwell. Following the death of Syd Battson, the organizer of Age Unlimited Senior’s Group, Henry Nurse asked me to be his assistant coordinator with a job description “Plan interesting meetings for a sen-ior’s Ministry at Banwell”. Ten years have passed quickly and we still plan educational and enter-taining meetings for Banwell Seniors. We have a marvelous Hostess group, set up and clean-up crew who enjoy the fellowship. As the hymn states “All the way my Saviour leads me” – I have felt God’s guidance love, faith and experienced the Gifts of the Holy Spirit, and have enjoyed my life’s “Incredible Journey”. THIS CONCLUDES “HIGHLIGHTS OF THE JOURNEY

In this final issue of Highlights of the Jour-ney, I have written about the amazing expe-rience I have had during the past eight dec-ades. This feature was introduced because a newcomer made inquiries about the found-ing members of Banwell Community Church and the organizers of our Age Unlimited Group. Grant Fairley spoke to our group and said it was important to tell your story for your children and future generations which I have attempted to do in past editions. I want to express my gratitude to all the peo-ple who were featured. If you wish to submit an article about what God has done in your life, I encourage you to submit it to the News ‘n Views editor (Mailbox #33) or to Debbie Ebel. Thanks for your memories! May God contin-ue to richly bless all people of Banwell Com-munity Church. Joan Fulmer

A Friend By Ron Kalkhourst

What is a friend who is part of your life? He or she is there for you in all of your strife.

They make the world better and help with the little things. They make you feel important and make you lift your wings.

They are behind you in everything you try,

And sometimes it makes you wonder and you ask, “why?” They are always a part of your life’s important times,

Because both together, you make these minutes unwind.

They give you advice which you don’t want to hear, But these are the times they make sure they are near.

They laugh with you in good times and cry with you when times are bad, So cherish your friend’s always and try not to make them mad.

Be happy.

Spring Is Here

By Kayla Meyers and Emma Pond

Age 11 and Age 11 - Both Grade 5

Spring is here,

Come and cheer,

Do not worry,

It’ll be back next year.

Grab your Frisbees

Grab your toys

Come and let’s play

With all the girls and boys

Look at the flowers

Sunshine for hours

Spring is here

So come and cheer

Spring’s almost over

But don’t give a fear

Because summer’s almost here

But that’s just another poem to share!

My Back Pages As we move further into spring, it may be too long ago to remember the most recent March break. But the way Linda and I were able to spend part of it reminded us (and me in particular) about a very important truth. The first weekend of the break we were supposed to be visited by our youngest son and his wife and two boys … but the flu bug hit their house so we had to change our plans. Most disappointing of all, it looked like this would affect not just our weekend plans but something else as well. His par-ents had suggested that our oldest grandson Mace would like to spend an extra day or two with us beyond the weekend. However, all was not lost … since he had taken sick early he became well before the rest, so he would be able to stay with us after all. We would miss the rest of the family, but at least we’d have some time with Mace! We always love having Mace with us and wanted to plan some fun things to do during that time. On the Monday I decided to take him to the new water attraction here in Windsor, Adventure Bay. It wasn’t the nicest day, as it ended up snowing for most of the afternoon. It’s not exactly around the corner for us, as we live in the Puce/Belle River area. And the water park was very busy, being spring break and all … and having a seven year old in tow requires some care and attention with all the other people crowding the venue. Adding all these things up, I almost chickened out. But something told me this could be a very special time … so we hopped in the car and downtown we went. We had a blast! Though we didn’t try some of the most challenging water slides, the ones we did try along with the Lazy River and the wave pool were just so much fun. I couldn’t keep the smile off my face as we splashed in the warm water while the snow swirled outside. I even met my old family doctor there who had recently retired … he was there with his grandchildren as well and gave me a high five! It just so happened that this was occurring on a Monday, which is my “day of rest” … and I couldn’t think of a better way to enjoy it! We read in scripture about the Sabbath rest and how this was de-signed by our heavenly Father for our benefit. Like most of you, I live a busy life with days chocked full of important activities and events. Sometimes it all gets pretty serious … I feel a great need for this day aside, which God has provided for us. I hope you will consider this for yourself, as you live your busy life. We were not meant to go full bore, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. I read an article a few years ago by noted Christian pas-tor, professor and author Eugene Peterson. Through the years, he and his wife began to incorpo-rate two things into their day of rest … freedom and nature. That day with my oldest grandson I was able to enjoy the freedom to be with him … and to let the Lazy River float me along! The next day I went back to work feeling refreshed and ready for the challenges of the day. Truly “every good and perfect gift comes from the above, from the Father of Lights.” Find some time for Sab-bath, my friends! Devotedly your pastor … Alex
