Pentecost – This Changes
Everything Again
(Please Read Twice – Slowly)
When the Christ Child was born (our Christmas
Celebration), the world and everything about the
world changed. God was in our midst in a whole
new way.
When Jesus rose from the dead (our Easter
celebration), everything changed. Now salvation
was accomplished, life had a future and a guarantee
unknown before.
At Pentecost, as recorded in Acts Chapter 2, our
world was again overturned. Now the Holy Spirit
was with us as never before. The disciples went
from uncertainty and fear to an unstoppable
courage. They now had faith, real faith, and
purpose unknown to them before. They went from
hoping Jesus would save them from the Romans to
knowing Jesus had won salvation and freedom and
life for keeps. With Pentecost came the church, and
God’s people were turned loose to love and care and
teach and call and be God’s family like never before.
So now let us (you and me) live out Pentecost. That
means coming to worship, every week, to soak up
the art and joy of living as God’s people. We’ll
learn what the early church figured out about Jesus.
We’ll share communion and be reminded we are
forgiven and we are united. We’ll be inspired by the
truth of scripture, heart-grabbing music, and the
presence of Jesus in each other. Some days we will
come to Prince of Peace seeking peace and answers
and comfort. Other days we will come to Prince of
Peace able to be those very things for others. Most
days we will come not knowing which we are but
having a sense it’s the right thing to do.
Find peace this upcoming Pentecost season as you
rise up each morning confident the Spirit of God is
right there with you. Then boldly live that day as
God taught you and called you to do, “to do justice,
and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your
God.” (from Micah 6:8)

GENESIS PROJECT FREEDOM
WALK
The 5k walk happens on Saturday, June 2, starting
at 10:00 a.m. and going until 1:00 p.m. Participate
with your friends, family, or coworkers to support
women and girls escaping the commercial sex trade in
King County. The Freedom Walk 5k lets you walk
International Blvd., in SeaTac, WA, where a vast
portion of the trafficking and exploitation in
Washington State takes place. The mission of the
Genesis Project is to educate the community, support
survivors, and let the perpetrators know that we
won’t stand for modern day slavery. The cost to
participate in the walk is $30, with proceeds going to
benefit the Genesis Project Drop-in Center, helping
women and girls out of trafficking and exploitation.
Leashed dogs, strollers, and children are welcome to
this family event! Please consider making signs to
bring while you walk the 5k route, to spread
awareness to the community. Register online at

SYNOD GATHERING AT ST.
ANDREW’S IN BELLEVUE
Some of you have signed up to participate in the
Synod Gathering at St. Andrew’s in Bellevue on
Saturday, June 2, starting at 8:30 a.m. This year the
Synod has decided to do two one-day gatherings in
place of the annual three-day Synod Workshop (the
other possible date was Saturday, June 9, at
Bethlehem in Marysville). This makes it more
possible for the casual attendant to participate and
enjoy available workshops. For those attending this
important day, there will be up to 21 individual
classes possible during the time (three of which one
person can attend—your choice from all 21
possibilities!). We’re thankful to those who signed up
to go. Consider signing up for next year’s Synod
Gatherings (usually happening the month of May or
June). If you’re a Council member, the church covers
your cost which includes lunch and a reception
following. Look for a wrap-up article in next month’s
Banner.

HIGH SCHOOL
GRATUATES ARE
RECOGNIZED
Sunday, June 10, we will
recognize those hard-working high school graduates
among us. This year we will have only ONE
graduating senior—Jack Madsen. Come to the
10:00 a.m. worship service where Jack will be
presented with a quilt made by our resident quilting
team and a reception following worship service to
recognize the important event that graduating high
school is. We’re proud of you, Jack! Great work and
our prayers are with you as you move forward into
adulthood.
FATHER’S DAY
AND NEW
MEMBER
SUNDAY
This year, Sunday, June 17, is a two-fer! It’s
Father’s Day where we will celebrate all that it is to
be a Father in today’s world AND we are also
receiving new members into the family of Jesus at
Prince of Peace. Come out for our 10:00 a.m. worship
service followed by a cake and coffee reception to
celebrate those two very important events happening
that day.
LADIES BOOK CLUB
June’s meeting will take place on Monday, June 11,
at 11:00 a.m. in the Fireside Room.
June’s book is Go Set a Watchman by Harper Lee. A landmark new novel set two decades after her beloved Pulitzer Prize–winning masterpiece, To Kill a Mockingbird.
Maycomb, Alabama. Twenty-
six-year-old Jean Louise
Finch—"Scout"—returns
home from New York City to
visit her aging father, Atticus.
Set against the backdrop of the
civil rights tensions and
political turmoil that were
transforming the South, Jean
Louise's homecoming turns
bittersweet when she learns
disturbing truths about her
close-knit family, the town,
and the people dearest to her.
The Ladies Book Club will take a break during
summer months (July through August) and return
again on September 10 with The Atlas of Forgotten
Places by Jenny Williams.
Save the date! If you enjoy a good book, Joyce Lentz
will be happy to answer any questions you have about
Ladies Book Club. Reach her at (206) 878-6408.

LET US PRAY
The summer issues of Gather magazine will focus on
prayer. How? Why? When? The articles expand on all
three questions. Do you pray for a parking spot in a busy
place? Do you pray all day without even knowing it…yet
sensing the presence of the Lord? Do you pray when
you’re worried? (WAIT! We aren’t supposed to worry,
are we? Jesus talks about worry six times in nine verses
in Matthew 6:25-34.) Do we sometimes get what we pray
for even though it isn’t the best? Do we sometimes
receive what is best even though we don’t pray for it?
When we pray for others, can they feel it? (p. 40...”the
web of prayer kept us alive. We leaned on their faith
because ours was gasping for breath.”) Do we remember
to recognize abundance? If so,
that is a kind of prayer...
As usual, Gather is PACKED
with encouragement, insight,
and reassurance. There are too
many phrases to note. One
more...“...intercessory prayer is an act of faith--a deep
trust in the promises made to us by a loving and merciful
God who promised never to leave us--but it is also an act
of hope.” (p. 19)
So, get out your highlighter pen and be prepared to turn
the articles yellow! The meaningful words are abundant.
(There will be no circle meetings in June, July, or
August.)
SAVE THE DATES: Yes, there are a couple of them to
note…
Saturday, July 28, Meghan Johnston Abalone will be
introducing the three-part Gather series on “Repentance.”
Two great bits of information: We are getting advanced
notice on this; AND it is close! It will take place from
9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at All Saints Lutheran Church on
Military Road. Registration includes lunch: Before
July 7 the fee is $25; after July 7 the fee is $35.
Registration forms are on the WELCA bulletin board.
Friday, September 21 through Sunday, September 23,
there will be a women’s retreat at Warm Beach
Conference Center. The speaker is Barbara Bell who is
“recognized for her humor, Biblical insight...” “The
retreat will look at Scripture and the encouragement God
gives to refuel and refresh our hearts to choose attitudes
that honor Him. If attitudes are contagious, are yours
worth catching?” Registration fee is $150 if registered
before August 20.
QUILT REPORT: In April, 76 beautiful quilts adorned
the sanctuary and were blessed on their way. THANK
YOU to all of the women who quilt throughout the year
both at church and at home. ALSO thank you to all who
packed and transported the quilts for shipping to
Lutheran World Relief.
THE LOVE PROJECT: In May we collected items
needed at the Church of Steadfast Love (Pastor Kristy
Daniels). WELCA used some of their reception money to
purchase socks, travel-sized shampoo, toothpaste,
toothbrushes, and soaps. These items will be delivered
with all of the items generously donated by Prince of
Peace throughout the month of May.
WELCA Love Project for June is going to support the
HiLine Food Bank. We are collecting CANNED fruits
and vegetables. Bring a can (or more) to church on
Sunday and put it in the food bank box OR the WELCA
Love Project box in the Fellowship Hall. We’ll deliver
those canned items to the food bank during the month of
June. Have a happy summer and, as always, thank you for
supporting the Love Project! It takes a lot of love to make
the world go around.
Let Us Pray “Our connectedness begins and ends with the Lord...He is
our source and spark.” (p.40)

Meeting called to order by President, Stan Skjeie, at
6:30 p.m.
Devotions & communion- By Pastor Conrad.
The [church] bell has become a sign of jubilation,
celebration, and affirmation. Pastor Conrad compiled
a list of 13 members who were present and heard the
bell while in use after it was installed. Deborah is
calling them and a group picture will be taken during
the children’s message. They will each have an
opportunity to share and pass on the gift to the kids.
The kids will then pass on the envelopes with the
history and a photo of the bell to the elders.
Bob made a motion to adopt the previous [month’s]
minutes and Nancy seconded, [March] minutes were
adopted.
ED building (special projects): Bob Atkinson
recommended reducing/trimming the deck, putting
planters. John McKay recommended suspended
ceilings. The team concur that the siding is still
good, and the church could save a lot by replacing
just a few boards that appear worn. A good paint job
will enhance the building appearance and life. The
committee advised to consult with Phyllis in regards
to the siding as well as she is passionate for a
complete replacement of the current siding.
From the Presidents Corner: Stan reported that Joey
and the Ecumenical Leadership Council, comprising
seven congregations including Prince of Peace held
their meeting here at POP. We were happy to host
the ELC. The director of Mary’s Place was a guest
speaker and indicated that they have an opportunity
to purchase their first building in Burien to host
families that are struggling with homelessness. The
community dinner, Stan, reported has become a
family event where people visit and enjoy each other’s
company.
From the Pastor’s Ministries: Pastor Conrad
informed members present that Denise and Fred from
the safety committee want to meet with the church
staff for safety training. In regards to emergency
preparedness, they have talked to the Burien Police
who are willing to come and help educate us about
emergence situations like an active shooter incident.
Pastor Conrad added that Britta’s confirmation is set
for May 20, 2018. Also many people are interested in
the printed Banner evidenced by the response from
the Easter Banner that was sent out. There was great
Prince of Peace Lutheran Church Banner June 2018 19030 8th Ave S, SeaTac 98148 6 Volume 27 Issue 6
response throughout the Lenten season, we had more
people during the Wednesday services and had 188
people in attendance for our Easter worship.
Continuing Ministries: WELCA will pack all the
quilts on Thursday, May 3, and deliver them on
May 4. Sam will help drive the van for this purpose.
Old business: None
New Business: The author of Atlas of Forgotten Places
will be visiting with Prince of Peace book club and
Eileen is coordinating that. Also May 6, will be the
Crop walk and all are invited to take part or give
financially.
Meeting was adjourned at 8:05 p.m.
Respectfully submitted, Sam Sseba, Secretary
MOTHER’S DAY
FLOWERS
Special thanks go to Barbara
Atkinson and all who showed
up on May 12 to do Mother’s
Day arts and crafts and put
together the beautiful flower
arrangements that were
handed out on Sunday, May 13, for Mother’s Day.
Barbara put together SO MANY flower arrange-
ments, the Fellowship Hall and truly the entire
building smelled like a florist shop. Special thanks
from Kathy Hand who gave us this picture to print of
her lovely bouquet at her home. Thanks, Barb! We
really appreciate all you do around here to make us
feel special!
BEES ARE BUZZING!
If you’ve had a chance to notice it, we are now the
proud landlord of a couple of really beautiful bee
hives. Pam Randall was gifted a bee hive and then
later found out that the City of Des Moines does not
allow them on the size of property her home is on.
Without a $6,000 variance, the City wouldn’t allow
them to be kept. Pam came to May’s council meeting
with a plea to allow her to move the hives to PoP
property with the promise that she would care for the
hives and provide us with some of the honey harvest.
Council enthusiastically agreed that it was a wonder-
ful idea. The hives are far enough away from the
building that they won’t cause issues with swarming
or even a noticeable uptick in neighborhood bee
population. Pam also reached out to neighboring
houses to make sure no one would worry about the
hives. So far, so good. The bees seem happy here and
Pam has several times come to do maintenance and
upkeep on the bees. We think it’s the “bee’s knees!”
We’re so glad to have contributed to keeping the
planet alive since our honey bee populations have
been dwindling due to (likely) pesticide use. Thanks,
Pam, for bringing the bees. We hope to be tasting
honey soon!

BLOODWORKS BLOOD
DRIVE
Numbers reported for the last blood
drive in April are as follows: we had 30
whole blood donors attend and BloodWorks was able
to collect 30 units of blood! For the platelet collection
that we started in April, two donors registered which
yielded three products. The next blood drive is here
at Prince of Peace on Monday, June 11, starting at
12:30 p.m. The platelet donations will continue since
it worked out so well. With Chris Simonds no longer
volunteering for the drive, Nancy Hadley is looking
for an able-bodied volunteer to come and put out the
big sign one week prior to the blood drive and then
on the day of the blood drive to stay until the end to
help her drive around and pick up signage and to put
away the big sign. Talk to Nancy directly or see
Deborah in the office if you are interested in helping
out with this important work. We hope you can come
out and donate again if you have before or donate for
the first time if you haven’t done so.
40,000 OF MY
CLOSEST FRIENDS
By the Rev. Kirby Unti, Bishop,
NWWA Synod
From the JUNE 2018 edition of
The Spirit
I am just coming off a wonderful pre-youth gathering
event intended to prepare the 276 young people from
the Northwest Washington Synod who will be
traveling this summer to Houston, Texas for this
ELCA's national youth gathering.
When I meet with the young people of our Synod I
am both terrified and inspired. I am terrified because
I am so disconnected from the world that they inhabit
– apps, language, movies, music, etc., I worry whether
I can relate to these remarkable young people. Do I
have something of meaning that I can bring to the
table?
I am inspired because I am so very impressed by the
young people who are formed by this church. They
have hearts that care. They exhibit behavior that is
fun to be around. Repeatedly my experience has been
how respectfully they treat me and others. I love
their global awareness and how at-home they seem to
be in a world that, at times for me, is overwhelming.
One of the things that our young people have shown
me is how they resonate to authenticity and honesty.
They will put up with an old goat like me if I strive to
live within my own skin and answer their questions
honestly.
We had a "Stump the Bishop" session at this recent
prep event. They asked fun questions - and they
asked hard questions. Where was God when the
holocaust took place? How can there be different
interpretations of the Bible? Who was my first
crush? Did I like being a parish pastor more than
being a bishop? Which of my daughters do I love the
most?"
They wanted honest answers - and I did my best.
The ELCA Youth Gathering will make a real impact
on the city of Houston. Unleashing 40,000 students
equals a lot of worker bees - and I saw how much
good can be done when we were last in Detroit.
The event also has the potential to have a major
impact on our young people - helping them to deepen
their understanding of their baptism and their
vocational call. We will worship together, pray
together, play together, and serve together.
One day of the Gathering is set aside as a Synod Day.
During that time, I will again have the joy of
spending time with our synod youth – and sharing
my personal faith journey with them. It is indeed a
privilege to have this opportunity.
Research shows that young people who have this kind
of religious scaffolding, experience less at-risk behav-
ior and are three to four times more likely to be
involved in their community in the following ways:
Prince of Peace Lutheran Church Banner June 2018 19030 8th Ave S, SeaTac 98148 8 Volume 27 Issue 6
Work on community projects
Volunteer associations
Vote in local elections
Attend Public Meetings
Donate time and money
So, June 27-July 1, think of me and 40,000 of my
closest friends, as we will experience what it means to
be the church together for the sake of the world.
NURSE’S
CORNER
Is a cup of tea the cure
for what ails you? Peace
in Ireland is apparently
due to tea. Research
suggests tea may offer
real health benefits. With the recent chill that
descended over Seattle, the timing is perfect to enjoy
a cup of tea for its ability to warm us up, quell coughs,
and sooth stuffy noses. What is the difference
between teas, tisane or infusion? True teas are black,
green, oolong, and white teas. The biggest difference
is how long they are fermented. These leaves come
from the camellia sinensis plant. Tisanes are basically
anything else you can steep or infuse in hot water,
such as herbs and flowers. True teas contain several
catechins which belong to the class of antioxidants
phytonutrients known as polyphenols. The most
notable is epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). EGCGs
are strong antioxidants with anti-inflammatory and
possible anti-cancer properties. Green tea is highest
in EGCG followed by white tea. Oolong tea has more
EGCG than black tea. Research suggests that green
tea helps reduce total cholesterol; both black and
green teas help reduce bad LDL cholesterol and lower
blood pressure. Adults who drink two cups of tea
daily have a lower risk of Type 2 Diabetes. A cup of
tea feels like a balm for the soul; it can actually reduce
the risk of depression. Tea is not a magic bullet and
(remember) just because studies find an association
between two things doesn’t guarantee one thing is
causing the other. If you have tried and failed to
enjoy green tea, consider two things: green tea can
become bitter if overbrewed; and different types of
green tea have different brew times. Not all green
teas have the same flavor when harvested or
processed; all affect the flavor. Buy small amounts
and try them at home or go to tastings before you
buy. Submitted by Karen Richter, (Parish Nurse) RN

REMEMBERING…
Hazel and James Norbury,
former members of Prince of
Peace have both passed away
(as of May 16, 2018). Hazel
had a stroke that brought her
down on that date. While
researching Hazel’s passing,
we discovered that Jim had passed away in 2013 (no
cause given). Hazel and Jim were members of our
church for a long time starting in 1977. When their
daughter, Nancy, moved to Spokane and established a
family there, they sold their home here in Burien and
moved to be close to Nancy and her family. They
enjoyed their grandson very much. Hazel and Jim are
survived by their daughter Nancy, son-in-law Duane,
grandson Andrew, son Jim, Jr., and daughter-in-law
Donna.
THANK YOUS
“Dear Friends at Prince of Peace: It has now been a
month since the faith.forming.faith Pastoral Mentoring
Conference took place at your church. Rostered
leaders from all over the country continue to write to
Prince of Peace Lutheran Church Banner June 2018 19030 8th Ave S, SeaTac 98148 9 Volume 27 Issue 6
me expressing their thanks for what almost all of
them have called, “the most important continuing
education event I ever attended.” None of this would
have been possible without you generosity to the
ministry of faith.forming.faith. By offering us your
building and encouraging your staff to lean in
enthusiastically, you provided a space in which over
40 pastors, deacons, and candidates for ministry were
able to come together for three days to study,
worship, pray, and learn. The facility was perfect for
our needs. We are so grateful. But more, you offered
us a generous mission offering of over $1,750. With
that offering, we were able to provide travel equaliza-
tion for pastors who came to this conference from as
far away as Athens, GA, Western ND, and
Wilmington, DE. Many of those who attended live
right here in our own Northwest Washington Synod,
but as you can see, many do not. And your generosity
allowed leaders from near and far to come together,
learn together, and share their diverse experiences of
ministry. Please know of my own gratitude and that
of the board of faith.forming.faith. We simply don’t
know how we would have pulled this off without you.
And we hope that we were good guests and that we
might return in early 2019 for a similar event. Thank
you again for your partnership. Sincerely yours in
Christ, Paul E. Hoffman”

GOSPEL FOR JUNE
June 3—Mark 2:23—3:6
Jesus challenges the prevailing interpretation of what is lawful
on the Sabbath and tells his critics that the Sabbath was made
for humankind, not the other way around. Healing the man with
the withered hand is work that cannot wait until the next day.
June 10—Mark 3:20-35
In response to charges that he is possessed, Jesus wonders aloud
how anyone who is demon possessed can cast out demons.
Those who do the will of God are possessed by the Holy Spirit,
sisters and brothers of Christ.
June 17—Mark 4:26-34
Jesus frequently uses parables to teach ordinary people as they
are able to hear and understand. Images of sowing and growing
show the vitality of God’s kingdom.
June 24—Mark 4:35-41
Jesus’ calming of the storm on the sea reveals his power over
evil, since the sea represents evil and chaos. The boat on the sea
is a symbol of the church and invites us to trust God amid life’s
turbulence.
