    Grappling? In Boxing? C'mon now!

That seems to be one of the most common responses tothe assertion that, yes indeed, -o/ing contains grappling.Well, at least it used to, that is. This is often accompanied bythe suggestion that &proper( -o/ing doesn't contain grappling

but that lowbrow &street fighting( type -o/ing, used by thugs, legbreakers, and ner'dowells possibly could. 4ometimes theresponse is a variation of the idea that &proper( -o/ing doesn'tcontain grappling but that the popularity of Mi/ed Martial Arts5MMA6 competitions such as the 7# has seen a sort of

bastardi8ation of the real, technical, &4weet 4cience,( -o/ingto include things that have never, ever, been a part of &true and

proper( -o/ing. A somewhat more charitable variation assertsthat, though &proper( -o/ing doesn't include grappling, certain

practitioners have contaminated the pure sport by including it,perhaps from some unspecified and un-o/ingish martial art,'um, maybe Muay Thai, +arate or something'.

)ou may already be familiar with the fact that older

styles of -o/ing, older rule sets, which for convenience sake!'ll call 'lassic ugilism'9, did, in fact, contain a great deal ofgrappling. :r, perhaps, you're new to the idea and areintrigued. !f so, welcome to a new, well old, and valuable sliceof -o/ing from the past.

)es, it's true. lassic ugilism historically includednumerous elements of what we call today, &grappling.( !t wascommon during earlier periods to call it wrestling or, often, to

refer to individual techni"ues. *evertheless, include them theydid. These techni"ues encompassed trips, throws, bodygrapples, bodyclashes, and, sometimes, what we today wouldcall downright dirty fighting. :ur pugilistic ancestors wererough men who participated in a rough sport. There wereseveral evolutions of the rules of bo/ing, but again, forconvenience sake, let's separate it by its three major divisions.

-o/ing can be said to be one of man's two oldest

sports, the other being Wrestling. -o/ing historians can, andhave, made a case that the roots of Modern -o/ing hearken

back perhaps as far as ancient 2gypt, but most are content totrace it back to ancient ;reece where it appeared in variousforms. *evertheless, the verifiable roots of Modern -o/ingare difficult to trace earlier than post$oman occupation2ngland. )es, there likely has always been a sport in whichtwo men punch each other in the head, but was that -o/ingeus' skull. Whatever the case, thehistory of Modern -o/ing is clearly 2nglish in origin.

2ven within that history we we want to look at certainperiods which we will define by rule sets. These rule sets arethe -roughton era rules, the 0ondon ri8e $ing rules, and theMar"uis of ?ueensbury rules. We'll focus mainly on the-roughton era rules and the 0ondon ri8e $ing rules but touchupon the Mar"uis of ?ueensbury rules as well.

-roughton is said to have coined his rules after killinga man in the ring 5! did mention that lassic ugilism was arough sport6. Apart from details of the ring, winning the bout, rounds, and awarding of the purse, his rules were thus

@That no person is to hit his Adversary when he isdown, or sei8e him by the ham, the breeches, or any

part below the waist a man on his knees is reckoned

    down.@

*otice that this leaves more than a bit of play. What, amongthe modern &dirty tricks,( is legal under this one sentence ruleset< ?uite a lot.

The 0ondon ri8e $ing rules were somewhat moree/tensive and, among other things, stipulated

*o butting. *o hitting a downed man. *o hitting below the belt. *o gouging or biting. *o kicking or falling on an opponent knees

first. *o grabbing from the waist down.

    Again, what isn'tforbidden speaks volumes.

The Mar"uis of ?ueensbury rules effectively

eliminated grappling from the sport by stipulating, &*owrestling or hugging allowed.( 1owever, that is not to saythat Mar"uis rules were immediately adopted by all. Thereremained a period of overlap between each of the rule sets andmany of the manuals written after the Mar"uis of ?ueensburyrules were published give elo"uent testament to the fact thatmatches including grappling were still fought for "uite sometime.

-ut is it useful to me today< ! mean, really, what's thepoint of it today< an't you just go down to the -ra8ilian =u=itsu or =udo club< Well, sure you could. -ut at those clubsyou'll learn -ra8ilian =u =itsu and =udo. )ou won't be learningthe historic grappling of lassic ugilism. 4ure there are a lotof similarities, however, most -ra8ilian =u =itsu and =udoschools are not going to teach you how to integrate theire/cellent grappling arts with ugilism. )es, if you're creative

and hard working you can figure it out. 4ounds like a prettygood plan. -ut wouldn't it be nice if you had some hints onhow to integrate
