During the nineteenth century, the civil parish of Balteagh was part of the Roman Catholic parish of Limavady. It also had links with the Roman Catholic parish of Errigal [Garvagh]. Later, Drumsurn became part of the Roman Catholic parish of Dungiven when St. Matthews's Drumsurn replaced Gortgarn Chapel in Dungiven Parish, c.1900.
