Update This week the school sent home an Information Guide for Parents and Carers of NSW school students returning to face-to-face learning. The information is also available on our schools Facebook page and Seesaw app. I encourage you all to read this information as this will provide you with the current guidelines that the school is obligated to follow as at the 11 June 2020, until further notice. Unfortunately, parents/carers as well as non- essential adults are still not permitted on school grounds or at school events unless specifically approved by the principal. You will continue to be informed of future updates and directions when the NSW Government makes further announcements. I would also like to acknowledge and thank you for your patience and cooperation with the changes to our afternoon pick up at both the Hume Highway pedestrian exit and Kiss & Drop zone areas. I understand that this is challenging and perhaps a little tedious at times, but the process appears to be working well now that we have all become accustomed to the procedures and are complying with the social distancing rules. A strong reminder however, to those parents and carers using our Kiss & Drop zone in the afternoon pick up period. There are still some parents arriving well before 3.00pm and parking in the Kiss & Drop zone and/or blocking the Hume Highway preventing the flow of traffic. Notes were distributed to all parents and carers outlining the rules and procedures when using our Kiss & Drop. Those parents and carers who continue to not follow the rules please be warned that the police will be periodically visiting the zone and you will be issued with a traffic infringement. Congratulations Congratulations to Ms Cintia Chacon for her recent success with being merit selected for the position of permanent classroom teacher. Cintia has been employed in a temporary capacity at Bankstown North Public School for twelve years and is an asset to our school community. Please join me in congratulating Cintia. School Uniform Some parents and carers would have recently received letters if their child/children are out of school uniform or not wearing a school hat. School uniform is School Policy and is endorsed by the schools P&C. If you child continues to be out of school uniform I will be contacting you to further discuss. In particular, non-uniform articles of clothing that are not suitable to wear to school are:

• Plain blue or black tracksuit pants and jackets • Coloured jumpers or jackets • Caps and non-school beanies • Coloured leggings and skivvy’s • Coloured sneakers on non-sport days

I am aware that our uniform range lacks a warm jumper, therefore I have been liaising with our school uniform provider, Yeronga School Uniforms who have agreed to provide us with samples of clothing which will be both suitable and well-priced. The items will be discussed by the schools P&C before a decision is made. Due to a high number of lost and misplaced jackets, it has been suggested by a parent that children’s names could be embroidered onto the back of the collar. I am happy to agree to this as long as it is small and in a light bue colour.

Late Arrivals Lateness continues to be a problem particularly now that students are returning to school. Routines of getting out of bed on time and leaving home early to avoid traffic, need to be re-established. Parents and carers, it is your responsibility to ensure that your child arrives at school between 8.30am and 8.55am. Parents who continue to allow their child/children to arrive late will be receiving letters and the Home School Liaison Officer (HSLO) and myself will be contacting you to assist you in with managing this issue of Educational Neglect. Children who arrive late miss out on their learning and also disturb the learning of others by interrupting the lesson when they arrive in the classroom. They are also unable to order their lunch from the school canteen. Your co-operation with this matter is expected.

Semester 1 Reports Semester 1 reports will be available online through our Parent Sentral app for all students K-6 on Friday 14 August 2020 (Term 3). We ask all parents who have not downloaded the Parent Sentral, to please do so as reports will not be printed and only available online. Sports Carnivals Term 3 Our annual sports carnival and cross country will be held next term. As mentioned above, there will be further updates from the Department of Education and NSW Government with regards to parents being able to attend. We will keep you updated.

Education Week ‘Learning together’ is the theme for Education Week and reflects the incredible months of 2020 where our students continued to learn and achieve, despite fires, floods and a pandemic. Education Week will run from Monday 3 August, to Friday 7 August (Term 3 Week 3). It’s our annual week of celebration, held in NSW for more than 50 years to highlight the achievements of our students and staff and the role of public schools as the cornerstone of their communities. We also want to acknowledge that parents and carers have been our partners in learning during this time. Further information regarding this celebration will be sent home in the upcoming weeks. Thank you for your continued support. Jon Godwin - Principal Yeronga Uniforms closed for stocktake Yeronga Uniforms will be closed from Friday 3 July and will re-open on Monday 13 July 2020 for stocktake.

In this together

During Reconciliation Week this year, students’ engaged with Wingaru Kids, an online Aboriginal owned and operated platform providing highly-engaging student learning experiences. Students loved knowing they were gaining authentic and accurate knowledge about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples.

The theme ‘In This Together’ highlights the interconnectedness of society- how we treat people and the environment, ultimately affects us all. At Bankstown North Public School, we constantly strive to be our ‘personal best’ and achieve our school motto- Skill with Honour.

Multicultural Public Speaking Competition

Attention Year 3 – 6 Students

The Bankstown North Public School Multicultural Public Speaking classroom competitions will be held in Week 8 of Term 2. The Stage competitions will be held in week 9. All students are expected to prepare a speech for their classroom competition. Public Speaking is part of the student’s learning and all students are encouraged to present to their peers in the classroom. Due to social distancing, local and regional finals have been postponed. We are still running our school competitions in anticipation of the event being rescheduled. What are the speaking requirements? At each stage of the competition, contestants present both a prepared speech and an impromptu speech. For their prepared speech, contestants must choose a topic from the list of topics just below. The prepared speech must convey a multicultural message. The impromptu speech is chosen by the adjudicator on the day, and will be on a general, non-multicultural theme. Contestants will have 5 minutes to write their impromptu speeches. The speaking times for each speech and division are outlined below. Note that speakers are expected to finish at or just beyond the official speaking time, and it will be considered poor timing to reach the continuous bell. What are the adjudicators looking for? The adjudicators will make their decision based on the matter, manner and method the contestants employ in presenting their speeches. They will expect contestants to be confident and engaging speakers. The prepared speeches need to show an understanding of multiculturalism, and be well developed and interesting. Contestants are also expected to demonstrate a balance of personal opinion and information in their speeches, as well as a balance of humour and sincerity. Finally, adjudicators are required to give equal consideration to the prepared and impromptu speeches in making their decision. What are the rules of the competition? Other than the entry rules and speaking times detailed above, it should also be noted that contestants are not allowed to use any props or external aids such as Powerpoint presentations during their speeches. They are encouraged to speak from palm cards and must present without the use of a lectern or microphone. Finally, just a reminder that the prepared speech must have multicultural content to be successful. Mrs Kerrie Hatfield - Organiser

The School Representative Council (SRC) met last week and discussed the ways we can help others within our school and the greater communities. In light

of the current climate, it was decided we would fundraise for a global cause. Oxfam is working globally to raise public health awareness, distribute hygiene

kits, develop public handwashing facilities, and provide clean water by restoring or protecting existing water sources across many underprivileged countries.

The SRC will fund raise by holding a sports jersey day. This is a mufti day where all students come to school in their favourite teams’ colours or teams’ jerseys. All students who wear mufti are asked to give a gold coin donation to assist in raising funds towards Oxfam’s global Corona Virus response.

Don’t forget your gold coin donation If you wear a sports jersey!

Chickens at Bankstown North

Public School

We have been lucky enough at Bankstown North Public School to watch our chicks hatch, grow and change over the last 12 weeks. A big THANKYOU to Teya, Jewel and Sador for taking wonderful care of the chicks during the school holidays and our COVID isolation.

Six students at a time are given the opportunity to pat and hold our growing chickens during LUNCHTIME, by displaying the LEARNING DISPOSITION of the week to their classroom teachers. Our LEARNING DISPOSITION of the WEEK is being PATIENT and PERSISTENT. I commend all of the students who have patiently waited their turn and I look forward to every child having a chance to experience the joy of watching animals at our school GROW and CHANGE. Mrs Oros

They returned to school healthy and happy and are now enjoying being FREE RANGE chickens with students helping to care and look after them. We look forward to when they begin laying eggs and are wondering if we have a rooster who will begin to crow soon.

Right: Honey, one of our possible roosters,

being held by Lojain.

Year 2 have learnt to catch Honey and

Muffin independently.

Thank you for helping, Layla, Isabelle and

Jewel

When your child misses just …

that equals … which is … so from Kindy to Year 12, they will miss out on

• MISS the important social interactions with friends

before the bell that can relax them and set them up positively for the work day ahead

• MISS the start of lessons so that learning

becomes disjointed and difficult

• MISS the morning greetings, messages, roll call, lunch orders,

collection of notes and monies etc.

• Distract other children when they arrive and interrupt the momentum of the group

• Receive unnecessary attention that may

make them feel uncomfortable or embarrassed
