The ProjectDesigned by renowned architects Kohn Pedersen Fox (KPF), the new commercial development at 1 Bank Street, Canary Wharf in London covers 28 storeys and features a triple basement, providing over 60,000m2 of internal floor space.

Three floors of the construction will offer state of the art trading facilities and there will also be a retail unit. As the project is located within the reclaimed South Dock, the surrounds will feature landscaped public areas with greenery, including a new public promenade with a retail kiosk. The triple basement which will provide parking for cars and bicycles has been designed to use grade 2 reinforced concrete, acting as a water retaining dock wall.

This development is another step of many towards making the Canary Wharf area one of London’s top locations for employment and offices. Several of these offices already have occupants, including one of the top European banking institutions, and it is believed that 1 Bank Street will provide almost 6,000 full-time equivalent jobs.

Scope Of ServicesThis project features intricate architectural details and required a high-end finish. Due to the quality of previous work we had completed for our client, they knew that TDS would be capable of handling such a high calibre of work. TDS were entrusted with the following tasks:

• 6 flight feature staircases• Atrium balustrade to 2No. floors

OutcomeBased on our client’s initial drawings, our team was tasked with developing a complete 3D model, GA’s and fabrication drawings for an architectural staircase, complete with hanging support structure and atrium balustrades. We also collaborated with our client by producing the drawings for a sample stair to be made. This allowed both client and fabricator toreview all the intricate details and major elements before the design progressed too far, ensuring that everybody involved was pleased with how the project was developing.

This proved to be an important element of the project, as this resulted in some of the design points being changed to aid fabrication for the main staircase. Originally, each flight of stairs consisted of two inline flights, but their sheer size meant that it was not possible to obtain the steel. Therefore, we developed a split flight design. This meant that two flights of stairs were fabricated in the workshop before being welded together to create one flight measuring over 9m long. Their size and weight also meant they had to be delivered on site during the earlier stages of the construction process, allowing them to be moved to the correct position before the final building envelope was constructed.

We also provided drawings with trace marks to be used during the water cutting process, allowing the fabricator to place connecting parts over the marks. This reduced the time it would have usually taken to set out and weld these connecting parts together, while also improving accuracy and eliminating the possibility of errors occurring during fabrication.
