Surrender to your senses in Thailand's cultural capital.
Bangkok is a city of contrasts. Smells (good and intense) assault the senses, and vendors jostle for attention at every turn. On the
other hand, it’s a city with a serene soul, where you’ll find imperial temples, great parks, plus beaming smiles from the world’s
friendliest people.

Getting Around
Air – Suvarnabhumi
International Airport
There are many ways to
reach the center. For the
Airport Rail Link, follow the
signs to Basement B. Catch
the direct Makkasan Express
Line – it costs about THB 90
to 150, departs daily between
6 am and 12 am and takes
15-17 minutes. The cheaper
City Line Train costs around
THB 15 to 45 one way, makes
6 stops and takes 30
minutes. Taxis cost about
THB 260 (plus a THB 50
Airport Fee) and it takes
around 45-60 minutes to get
to most places in central
Bangkok.
Air – Don Muang
International Airport
Catch a taxi on the 1st floor
outside Gate 8 – they take 45
minutes or more (depending
on traffic) and cost around
THB 350 (including an Airport
Fee). You can also catch the
orange A1 bus outside
Terminal 1 by Gate 7. It runs
between 7:30 am and 11:30
pm daily and tickets are
about THB 30. Trains depart
550 yards from the terminal
– follow the "Don Muang"
signs on the 2nd floor.
Tickets cost THB 54. Trains
run between 3:14 am and
10:28 pm daily but are rarely
on time.
Metro
Bangkok's well-developed
metro system runs daily
between 6 am and 12 am. To
locate stations, look for the
blue "Metro" signs. Buy
tokens with coins or cash at
touch-screen machines
inside – just tap your
destination and the price is
displayed, starting at THB 16for a single trip. 1 to 3-day
passes can be purchased at a
desk for around THB
120/230. All signs and
machines are in Thai and
English. Change at Chatuchak
Park, Sukhumvit and Silom
for the BTS Skytrain.
BTS Skytrain
The BTS Skytrain has great
coverage of the city center.
There are two main lines:
Sukhumvit (usually for the
malls along Sukhumvit Road)
and Silom (mainly for the
business areas). There are
machines, but it’s easiest to
buy a 1-day pass with
unlimited rides from the deskfor around THB 130. Trains
run between 5 am – 12 am
on weekdays and 6 am – 12
am on weekends and public
holidays. All stations have
clear route maps and signs in
Thai and English. Change at
Mo Chit, Asoke, and Sala
Daeng for the Bangkok
Metro.
Car
Since public transportation is
very efficient, it’s not
necessary to go out of your
way to rent a car. If you do,
it’s easiest to get it at the
airport. Traffic is usually
horrible during rush hour (8
am – 9 am and 6 pm – 7 pm
on weekdays). Bangkok also
has no parking garages, but
here's a local tip: parking at
malls up to 3 hours is free. If
you drive, road conditions
are generally good, just
watch out for motorcycles
and getting cut off by rude
taxi drivers!
Bus
The bus system is tricky and
you should know where
you’re going. Stops have blue
signs that display the bus
numbers that stop at them.
Purchase tickets with coins or
cash on board from a ticket
collector – they will ask for
your destination, then tell
you the fare. Express buses
cost around THB 8.50, and
air-conditioned buses cost
around THB 10. Most buses
run between 5 am – 11 pm, 7
days a week (some are 24/7).
Call the bus hotline at 1348
for more info.

Popular Attractions
We handpicked the top 10 classic sights for you to enjoy
Wat Phra Kaew – Temple of
the Emerald Buddha
Landmarks
Serenity surrounds this
spiritual building.
Thousands pray to the
Emerald Buddha at this
temple inside the GrandPalace. The Buddha—
carved out of a single
block of jade—is one of
the most treasured in
Thailand. On your way
in, study the walls: the
gilded characters of the
Ramakien, Thailand’s
adaptation of the Hindu
Ramayana, tell a visual
tale of their own.
Grand Palace
Landmarks
The Grand Palace is the
beating heart of
Thailand. The Royal
Family’s ceremonial
home is a vast complex
of buildings and paths
flooded with golden
light. Admire bejeweled
sword-bearing Guardian
Statues, see stately
outfits in the Pavilion of
Regalia, or bow before
the Emerald Buddha at
Wat Phra Kaew. Cover
up: tight clothes, bare
shoulders, arms and
legs aren't allowed.
Wat Pho – Temple of the
Reclining Buddha
Landmarks
This elaborate temple
doubles as the national
headquarters for the
education and
preservation of traditional Thai
medicine, and is also the
site of one of the first
Thai massage schools. If
you're not here to study,
wander through the
galleries filled with
gilded images of
Buddha, relax
respectfully next to the
150-foot-long Reclining
Buddha, or chat with the
local monks.

Wat Arun – Temple of the
Dawn
Landmarks
Cool gray from a
distance and a parade of
colors up close, Wat
Arun’s intense details
jump out at you from
every nook and cranny.
The main feature of this
temple is its "prang," a
341-foot tower covered
with colorful porcelain
that glistens in the
sunlight. Climb the
temple to admire theintricate craftsmanship,
or take a look at it from
the east side of Chao
Phraya River at sunset.
MBK Center
Shopping Areas
If you’ve got baht,
they’ve got a bargain.
Take your Christmas
shopping list and go wild
in the 2,000+ shops over
8 floors of consumer
bliss inside this mid-
range mall. Buy gizmos
and gadgets for your
siblings, designer
perfume for mom, or
local handicrafts for
grandma, and
everything else you
could possibly want at
the 4-story Tokyu
Department Store.
Siam Paragon Mall
Shopping Areas
What a place! The
experience of shopping
at Siam Paragon is like
having a Parisian
designer feed you
bonbons and take you
on a guided tour of
every boutique in town.
Browse Balenciaga's
gowns, take a peek in
Prada, or go bag crazy at
Louis Vuitton. Cuisine
options cover every
palate from Thai to
beyond – plus there’s a
cinema and bowling
alley for some R & R.
Central World Plaza
Shopping Areas

a mall of epic
proportions, is filled with

European and Japanese
brands, plus a few local

sell everything from
monkey wrenches to
sofas. Go bargain
hunting at Timberland,
Guess, GAP or Kate
Spade, then chow down
on snacks in the new
"Groove" section of the
mall.
Patpong
Popular Areas
Patpong has many a
risqué sign lining it
streets as it's one of the
notorious red light
districts in Bangkok. It
obviously isn't for a
family day out! Patpong
is filled with pink-lit bars,
restaurants and clubs
devoted to the ancient
profession of erotic
entertainment. If you’re
not there for those kinds
of thrills, there’s also a
small night market with
souvenirs, knickknacks
and plenty of street
food.
Chatuchak Weekend Markets
Landmarks
Put it on your to-do list –
this market is bound to
impress! Pack a sun
umbrella to ward off the
stifling heat while you
shop at the 3,500+
open-air, specialty stalls.

grab a bolt of floral
fabric and have it sewn
into a pantsuit, or pick
up handicrafts, spa
products and more.
Thirsty? The locally
made coconut ice-cream
is unbelievably good!

The House on Sathorn
Surrounded by towering
skyscrapers and the
concrete jungle, The
House on Sathorn is a
charming 126-year old
colonial mansion. Admire
its beauty from the
outside, or step inside to
explore. Highlights
include dining options, a
gorgeous courtyard and a
bar fit for the likes of
James Bond.
