How to reach Bengaluru?

Bengaluru is the capital city of Karnataka and is one of the prime business centres

country and the world. One could travel to and from Bengaluru by transport

modes such as roadways, railways, and airways.

By air: Bengaluru is well-connected with all the major cities both in India and

abroad. Bengaluru International Airport (BAIL) Devanahalli, is located 35km North

of Bengaluru city centre (MG Road) and off National Highway 7 (Bengaluru -

national highways which network different places. The city has 2 major bus depots

called Kempegowda Bus Station, popularly known as Majestic (Opp. City Railway

Station), and K.R. Market which is an important bus station located in an area with

many private bus services. Buses are available to all parts of Bengaluru besides far

off places. Shantinagar, which is near the Central office of KSRTC and BMTC. Tamil

Nadu-bound deluxe buses of SETC Tamil Nadu and KSRTC start from here. BMTC

Depot 2 and Depot 3 are located here. It is well connected to South and South EastBengaluru and the Majestic and Shivajinagar areas. One can also find the BMTC

Namma Metro:Namma Metro (Our Metro) Also known as Bengaluru Metro is theunder-construction mass-transit rail system for the city of Bengaluru, India. The

agency responsible for its implementation is the Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation

Ltd (BMRCL). With nearly 70% of the work completed as of February 2010, the first

stretch between Bayappanahalli to M.G. Road is scheduled to open in December

2010.

Note:The best way to travel to Doddakannelli from any other area in Bengaluru is

by an Auto rickshaw or by a cab. You could also take the public transport up to

'Agara' and take a shared auto rickshaw / cab.

The Bangalore Palace & Fort: Inspired by the Windsor castle, this

palace was built in the Tudor style. The special attraction is a gallery

of nearly a thousand historical photos, including those of viceroys,

carvings and paintings.

Lal Bagh: The garden houses over 1000 species of flora which

include rare and enchanting collection of tropical plants, trees and

herbs. The Glass House, modelled along London's Crystal Palace, is

the center of attraction in this 2400 acre park.

Cubbon Park: On a grassy expanse over a few hundred acres in thecentre of Bengaluru is the Cubbon Park. Lawns with vibrant flower

for fitness freaks and the elderly to take their morning jogs or

evening walks. The Park has elegant classical buildings like Attara

Kacheri (the Karnataka High Court) and the Visveswaraya Industrial

and Technological Museum, Government Museum, Aquarium,

Venkatappa Art Gallery, Seshadri Iyer Memorial Hall all of which are

well known. Besides these, it also houses Bal Bhavan - an

amusement park for children.

Attara Kacheri:Attara Kacheri literally means "eighteen offices" or

departments. In 1864, Commissioner Bowring conceived and

prepared the plans for setting up a full-fledged secretariat building,

almost a century before the Vidhana Soudha was even thought of.

Ravindra Kalakshetra: The Kalakshetra, built to commemorate

Rabindranath Tagore's centenary, promotes cultural activity in the

city. It has a superb theatre and houses the Cultural Akademi

Offices. Next to it is the Gothic styled Puttannachetty Town Hall

whose huge auditorium can easily accommodate over 1500

persons.

The Fort: Situated opposite the City Market, the Fort is noted forthe beautifully carved Islamic-style arches on the gate walls, and for

the well-preserved Ganapathi Temple within its precincts. One of

the temple's outer walls carries an exquisite carving of Sri Krishna

playing his flute, and within, there is a fine statue of Lord Ganesh,

which still attracts devotees. Originally this fort was built by

Chikkadeva Raya and was later extended, dimantled and rebuilt by

Haider Ali and Tipu Sultan.

Gandhi Bhavan: The Gandhi Smarak Nidhi, housed in the Gandhi

Bhavan, houses a comprehensive picture gallery and other exhibits

of Gandhiji which depict the life and times of Gandhiji. The Bhavan

is open on weekdays (10:30 Am to 5:00 PM).

Innovative Film City: Finally Bengaluru has something on the lines of Universal

Studios (not at that scale though). You get to see yourself how they shoot a movie

and enjoy some fun rides! The Film City is on Mysore Road.

Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium: Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium was founded by

the Bengaluru City Corporation in 1989. It is located on Sir.T Chowdaiah Road.

Since 1992, it is managed by the Bengaluru Association for Science Education

(BASE). BASE is devoted to dissemination of science among the public and the

student community. On the premises there are the Science Centre and a Science

Park. The Planetarium has a 15.0 meters diameter dome with a seating capacity of

210.

Vidhana Soudha: This splendid neo-Dravidian granite building that dominates the

northern boundary of the Cubbon Park, is the home of the State Legislature and


the Secretariat. It is a fusion of four architectural styles - Dravidian,

Rajasthani, Chola and Kannadiga. It is magnificent structure granite

with 12 massive pillars, archways and a wide flight of steps leading

up to its entrance. The Indian national

symbol four lions stands atop the biggest dome. The massive

sandalwood door of the Cabinet room is a spectacular feature of

this imposing building.

The Bangalore Race Course: The Bangalore Race Course is one of

the finest in India, with racing events almost all year round (May to

June and Nov to Mar). Some of the biggest field stakes in the country can be

witnessed here.

Wonder La: The newest amusement park to entertain Bengaloreans of all age is

the Wonder La Amusement Park. Situated on the Bengaluru Mysore Road, Wonder

La has already been ranked India's biggest amusement park. The reasons for this

distinction are many. It incorporates the latest technologies including a number of

water rides and latest imported land rides never seen elsewhere in the country.

There are always plenty of things to do in Bengaluru, whatever the time of year.

Hindu festivals have long been an integral part of life in Bengaluru. The city

celebrates Bengaluru's most important and oldest festival called "Karaga

Shaktyotsava" or Bengaluru Karaga. Deepavali, the "Festival of Lights", transcends

demographic and religious lines and is celebrated with great vigor. Dasara, a

traditional celebratory hallmark of the old Kingdom of Mysore is another

important festival. Other traditional Indian festivals such as Ganesh Chaturthi,

Ugadi, Sankranthi, Eid ul-Fitr, Independence Day, Republic Day, Ramzan, Christmas,

etc., are also celebrated.

Shopping is a delightful experience in Bengaluru. You'll find some of the most

exquisite silks here. You can also take home handicrafts in

sandalwood and rose wood available in state-owned emporia and

private stores. For gold and jewellery, you can visit the quaint

Jeweller's Street. Some of the favorite shopping haunts are

M.G.Road, Brigade Road, Residency Road and Commercial Street.
