BELLARY SHOCK FOR JD(S) Dist chief Suryanarayana Reddy to join BJP? Harish D L Bangalore Beat Bureau Bellary: The Bellary Rural by-election seems to have far-reaching effects on the parties in- volved. While the BJP has lost its trump card in B Sriramulu, who has been contesting the election as an independent, the JD(S) is all set to lose one of its prominent leaders from the district. Party sources told Bangalore Beat that JD(S) district president Suryanarayana Red- dy has raised a flag of revolt and is all set to join the BJP in a day or two. His departure has been triggered by the be- hind-the-scenes understanding between party state president H D Kumaraswamy and former minister B Sriramulu. Though Ku- maraswamy did not openly campaign or ex- press support for Sriramulu, it has been known by now that the former chief minis- ter has been giving a tacit support to the for- mer minister. Sriramulu even went to the extent of an- nouncing three days ago that Kumaraswamy would campaign for him for the by-election in the coming days. But Kumaraswamy’s overtures have found no favour with the ground level workers in the district. They have been upset that a one- time enemy has overnight become their leader’s favourite. They argue that they had been till now, fighting the dictatorial attitude of Sriramulu and his mentors and mining barons Reddy brothers in the area. Suryanarayana Reddy too has been op- posing any alliance with Sriramulu. Ku- maraswamy, who came to know about his party district president’s plans to switch parties, first sent Chamrajpet MLA from his party Zameer Ahmed Khan to convince Red- dy. But that did not have any effect as he re- mained adamant. His one-point demand was that the JD(S) should distance itself from Sri- ramulu. But Kumaraswamy, for reasons best known to him, has been bulldozing his way through. His visit to Bellary yesterday was, in fact, to pacify Suryanarayana Reddy to re- main in the party. But his efforts bore no fruits. Reddy has told the former chief min- ister that an alliance with Sriramulu could work at the state level and not on the ground. Marine industry tohit Rs 68K cr by ʼ15

Bangalore: Growing at a compound an-nual growth rate (CAGR) of about 7 per-cent, India’s marine and fish industry islikely to reach Rs 67,800 crore by 2015from the current level of nearly Rs 53,000crore, apex industry body Assocham saidtoday.

The processed segment is about Rs8,000 crore which is over 15 percent oftotal size of the domestic marine andfish industry, according to a study titled‘Indian Marine & Fish Industry’ releasedby the Associated Chambers of Commerceand Industry of India (ASSOCHAM).

The fish production in India is likelyto cross 12 million tonne (mt) by 2015from the current level of about 9.3 mt.Captured fish accounts for about 65 per-cent of total fish production, while aqua-culture accounts for over 30 percent ofannual fish production, said the study.

India is the second-largest fish producerin the world after China and accountsfor nearly 6 percent of global fish pro-duction.

“Over 8,000 km of coastline, four mil-lion hectares of reservoirs, two millionhectares of brackish water and nearly51,000 sqkm of continental shelf area of-fers a plethora of opportunities for thegrowth of marine and fish industry ofIndia,” said D S Rawat, secretary-generalof Assocham while releasing the findingsof the study.

“India’s substantial fishery resources

are under-utilised and there is tremendouspotential to further increase the output,”he said. “There is a huge scope for in-vestments in packaged marine processingplant, operations in preservation, pro-cessing and export of coastal fish for theprivate sector as it holds vast, untappedmarine resources with a great export po-tential.”

Nearly 30 percent of marine and fishproduced domestically is exported an-

nually. Processing of fish into cannedand frozen forms is carried out almostentirely for the export market.

The export earnings in 2010-11 reachednearly three billion dollars (about Rs15,000 crore), recording a growth of about20 percent compared to the previous year.Vannamei shrimp, black tiger shrimp, cuttlefish, lobster, clams, fish fillets andsquid are certain products that provideopportunities for export of marine items

fromIndia. The seafood exports from India are

likely to touch 4.7 billion dollars (aboutRs 23,500 crore) by 2013 from 2.8 billiondollars (about Rs 14,000 crore) in 2010-11 through value addition, expansion ofaquaculture, technological upgradationand by tapping unexplored resources, according to an Assocham study titled‘Indian Seafood Exports Market: 2014.’

The units in the fish processing sectorare largely small-scale proprietary, part-nership firms and fishermen cooperatives. There has been spectacular growth inthe marine fisheries sector due to well-developed harvest and post-harvest in-frastructure and increased demand forseafood both in the domestic and exportmarkets, said Assocham.

There is a scope for developing tech-nology for value addition and infrastruc-ture for exports in the form of marineproducts based food parks through publicprivate partnership.

Besides, there is an increased demandfor processed and ready-to-eat marineproducts in the domestic market and assuch Assocham suggests the governmentto encourage foreign investment in in-frastructure for distribution and storage.

Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka,Kerela, Maharashtra, Odisha, Tamil Naduand West Bengal are certain key statesthat have huge potential to enhanceIndia’s seafood export potential.

Hisss gets bigger at Mysore zoo Mysore: Mysore Zoo has anotherfeather, rather an animal, in itscap now. It is now home to theworld’s biggest snake, anaconda.

Five green anacondas, flewfrom the Sri Lankan NationalZoo by the Sri Lankan Airlines, reached the Chennai airport onTuesday and from there theywere shifted to the Mysore zoolate that night.

The green anaconda is thelargest snake in the world inboth weight and length. It canreach up to 30 ft in length andweigh up to 227 kg.

The green anaconda is a mem-ber of a family of snakes calledconstrictors. Constrictors are notvenomous snakes. They don'tkill prey by delivering venomthrough a bite. Instead, constric-tors wrap their bodies aroundtheir prey and squeeze until itstops breathing.

All the five anacondas, whichare 15 months old, arrived at thezoo safe. They are around 3-5feet long and weigh 400 to 1,500grams.

Females are significantly largerthan males. Other anacondaspecies, all from South Americaand all smaller than the greenanaconda, are the yellow, dark-spotted, and Bolivian varieties.

The green anaconda is anaquatic snake. It lives in swamps, marshes, and slow-moving rivers, mainly in the tropical rain forestsof the Amazon and Orinocobasins.

It's nocturnal or active at night. An anaconda will hunt on land, but prefers to stay in the water, where its huge size feels lessbulky. The green anaconda canmove swiftly both underwaterand on the surface. To hunt, it

lies on the surface of a pond orstream waiting for an animal tostop by for a drink. Its nostrilsare located on the top of itssnout, so it can breathe whilealmost entirely submerged. Whenit attacks, it springs from thewater and grabs the unsuspect-

ing creature with its small, sharpteeth, quickly wrapping its bodyaround the victim and squeezingit until it stops breathing. It thenmanoeuvres its prey into itsmouth, usually headfirst, andpowerful muscles contract inwaves to crush the meal and

push it down to its stomachThey reach their monumental

size on a diet of wild pigs, deer, birds, turtles, capybara, caimansand even jaguars. Theycan go weeks or months withoutfood after a big meal.

Female anacondas retain theireggs and give birth to two tothree dozen young. Baby snakesare about 2 ft long when theyare born and are almost imme-diately able to swim and hunt.Their lifespan in the wild is about10 years and in captivity theycan live up to 20 years. In mating, several competing males form abreeding ball around one femaleand that can last up to fourweeks.

The animals will temporarilybe housed in the python enclo-suretill the completion of thenew enclosure for anacondas, which is getting completed bythe yearend.

Mysore Zoo is building a newanaconda enclosure adjacent tothe snake enclosures, with di-mension of 40’ x 20’ area, withkeeper’s passage behind. Theestimated cost of the enclosureis Rs9lakh. There are two sepa-rate enclosures, and two viewingpointswith glass panelling. Nat-ural environmental conditions, such as water pond and green-ery,will be simulated to makethe animal feel comfortable andmove around freely.

Green Anaconda is newlyadded to other snakes in the zoocollection, like striped keel back, king cobra, rat snake, indiansand boa, rough scaled sandboa, reticulated python, rockpython, common Indian krait, and Russell viper and Indian co-bra.

Ashwin bags 2nd five‑for, India lose Sehwag earlyMumbai: Off-spinner R Ashwin com-pleted his second five-wicket haul ofhis career as West Indies folded theirfirst innings at a mammoth 590 beforeIndia made a brisk reply to reach 74 forone at lunch on the third day of thethird and final cricket Test here today.

Ashwin (5/156), who had bagged 6/47in the West Indies second innings inthe first Test in Delhi, claimed the lastWindies batsman in the form of De-vendra Bishoo 3.1 overs after the visitorsresumed the day at 575 for nine at theWankhede Stadium.

West Indies then struck a big blowto India by sending back danger manVirender Sehwag, leaving India 516runs behind and needing 315 more runsto avoid following on.

On a wicket that still played true ason the first two days, the hosts rocketedoff to 67 in less than 15 overs with Se-hwag and his opening partner GautamGambhir making a string reply beforethe former was out for a 50-ball 37.

At the lunch break, Gambhir wasbatting on 30 after a 101-minute stay atthe crease with four fours in 52 balls.Rahul Dravid was giving him company

on one.Gambhir and Sehwag began the reply

in a positive manner that they are knownfor. The former settled down after fishing

dangerously outside the off-stump whilethe latter was his usual, ebullient self.

Both the batsmen were confrontedby packed off-side fields, even someunusual field positions like a fly slipbehind the gully for Sehwag, but stillmanaged to find the gaps with easeagainst speedsters Fidel Edwards andRavi Rampaul who opened the visitors'bowling.

Gambhir, after surviving a leg beforeappeal by fast bowler Edwards, wenton the offensive by square-driving thebowler for his first boundary in thethird over of the day.

He hit two more off-side boundariesagainst both the fast bowlers while Se-hwag used minimum footwork to sendthe ball past the ropes twice despite a7-2 field.

ehwag then stepped out in disdainagainst Darren Sammy, when theWindies captain brought himself onafter the 10th over in place of Edwards, and deposited the ball over extra coverfor a six.

The 50 of the opening stand, whichcame with the six, was raised in just 54minutes after which Gambhir square-

cut Rampaul for a four.Sehwag, looking good for a big score,

was out when Sammy got his revengeby clean bowling the swashbucklingopener with a ball that moved in ashade and sneaked through the gapbetween bat and pad as he stretchedforward for a drive. Sehwag's 37 con-tained three fours and a six off 50 balls.

Gambhir and Dravid were peggedback by some tight bowling by Sammy,Rampaul and Edwards. The latter gothis first run -- a single -- from the 15thball he faced.

Earlier, India dismissed the last WestIndian wicket 16 minutes after start ofplay when Ashwin, bowling round thewicket, clean-bowled last man DevendraBishoo when the tail-ender tried analmighty heave to leg to end the visitors'innings off the 19th ball of the morn-ing.

Left-handed Bishoo added 10 runsto his overnight two while Edwards re-mained unconquered on 11. The touristsadded 15 runs today before losing theirlast wicket and the total is their highestin 36 years.

During the last Unified Com-mand meeting chaired by theChief Minister on November 9,the CRPF had sought implemen-tation of CrPC in the state to pro-vide them legal cover for opera-tion if government wants to re-move AFSPA.

"There are two issues - onethe rights of the Army and otherlegal immunity to them - which

they have raised during interac-tions," he said, adding "Armyhas apprehension that SHOs orhavaldars would arrest theirjawans and they will get entan-gled in unnecessary cases" ifAFSPA is revoked.

To another question, he saidthe Governor has to take a finaldecision on revocation of AFS-PA.

He also said that a team of of-
