The theory has often been called a bridge between behaviorist and cognitive learning
theories because it encompasses attention, memory, and motivation. People learn through
observing others behavior, attitudes, and outcomes of those behaviors. Most human behavior is
learned observationally through modeling: from observing others, one forms an idea of how new
behaviors are performed, and later on occasions this coded information serves as a guide for
action. Social learning theory explains human behavior in terms of continuous reciprocal
interaction between cognitive, behavioral, and environmental influences. Bandura believed in
reciprocal determinism, that is, the world and a persons behavior cause each other, while
behaviorism essentially states that ones environment causes ones behavior, Bandura, who was
studying adolescent aggression, found this too simplistic, and so in addition he suggested that
behavior causes environment as well. Later, Bandura soon considered personality as an
interaction between three components: the environment, behavior, and ones psychological
processes (ones ability to entertain images in minds and language. The component processes
underlying observational learning are: (1) Attention, including modeled events
(distinctiveness, affective valence, complexity, prevalence, functional value) and observer
characteristics (sensory capacities, arousal level, perceptual set, past reinforcement), (2)
Retention, including symbolic coding, cognitive organization, symbolic rehearsal, motor
rehearsal), (3) Motor Reproduction, including physical capabilities, self-observation of
reproduction, accuracy of feedback, and (4) Motivation, including external, vicarious and
self reinforcement. In relation, this theory is linked to our study since it deals with how
people learn from their environment using their observation besides we want to know the
level of awareness of the selected nursing students regarding the 11 key Core Competencies
that was released by the Commission on Higher Education. The Core Competencies have
been developed to around a set of assumptions to serve as a framework and guiding
principles for the design of the competency-based education and practice model.

The science of nursing is a discrete body of knowledge that incorporates: knowledge of
relationships among nurses, patients and their environments within the context of health; nursing
concepts and theories derived from the basic sciences, humanities and other disciplines.
