Waste Water Treatment Plant

Balikpapan city has one Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) located in the West part of Balikpapan

(located at Margasari village). This Margasari WWTP has installed capacity of 800 m3/day and utilization

capacity of 723 m3/day.

The WWTP can treat domestic wastewater with COD 500 mg/L, BOD 300 mg/L, SS 300 mg/L and NH3-N at

15 mg/L.

The operation of WWTP Margasari was started in 2003 part of Kalimantan Urban Development Project

(KUDP). The Margasari WWTP consists of:

- Collection chamber

- Equalization tank

- Aeration tank

- Sedimentation tank

- Treated tank

- Sludge tank

- Ground reservoir for treated water collection

- DTangki pembubuh dan juga ruang mekanikal/elektrikal

Sewerage network and pump station

The sewerage network was built in 2003 coincided with Margasari WWTP. The installed sewerage consist of

diameter 100 mm to 200 mm with PVC material, equipped with (control chamber), pump station and

manhole. There are 96 units of control chamber and manhole and 7 units of pump stations. The total

sewerage network is approximately 16.800 meter. Combination of gravity and pump system are

implemented in this system.

Zoning of Margasari WWTP system are divided into several zones, there are:

- Zona I, Pandan Sari service area

- Zona II, Exs Kebakaran P. Sari service area

- Zona III, Sepakat service area

- Zona IV, Kampung Atas Air service area

- Zona V, Adil Makmur dan Riko service area (extension of service area)

Household connections

No of connections in March 2011 is 1.359 located in two sub district Margasari dan Kampung Baru Tengah.

The Margasari area economically is located in sub urban area where it dominated with commercial area,

fisherman and labors. While Kampung Baru Tengah is housing complex area.

Wastewater tariff

The customers (household and social categories) must pay to operator (under PDAM management) is Rp.

3.000. This tariff based on City of Balikpapan regulation nomor 14 year 2006. The collection of bill is door to

door to the customers.

The issues and problems on implementation of household connections in Balikpapan;

- The low of perspective and understanding to have good sanitation system

- Limited infrastructure of sewerage and WWTP capacity.

- Technically mostly service areas are flat and require pumps to operate system. The pump

operation is average 38 m3/hours.

- The service level / coverage is still low. PDAM propose to have sewerage network extension.
