Expert Advice from 8- and 9-Year-Oldsat Bali International School

15 Things You Can Do to Have a Happy Morning

The Grade 3 class at Bali International School have been studying happiness and have become little experts on the habits of happiness for children. They shared their ideas with other children around the globe through publications such as The Huffington Post earlier this year and now at Bali Marketplace we are also honored to share their tips on how to have a happy morning. What a great start to a new school year! (Edited by their official secretary, Ibu Erin Threlfall)

Good memories make you so happy! Share away!!

Share a good memory with someone while you have your breakfast

Try to make someone else laugh

Smile

Play in the garden.

Take a hot shower

Enjoy your healthy breakfast

Express your gratitudeGet up to watch the

sunrise and listen tothe birds

Get plenty of sleep

Stretch and exercise

Take time to lookat nature

Dance!

Set yourself up for success: Get organized the night before

Be awesome

Turn those corners up and just smile! Everyone knows that smiling tells your brain that you are happy, so go on and just smile!

Play is fun! Fun=happiness.Enough said.

Refresh your body and get energized. Hot showers always make me feel great!

Put those sugary things down! A healthy breakfast is important for your brain. Sugary stuff will just make you feel all yucky later on. So eat a healthy breakfast like fruit and yogurt and you will feel so much happier!

Tell someone something that you are happy about, or write in your gratitude journal. Starting your day thinking about the good stuff makes you feel good. Then you look for the good stuff all day long so that you have something to share the next day.

Sunrises are so pretty, and the birds sound really wonderful. If you can’t do this, then look at something that makes you happy and listen to great music. This is sure to make you happy!

Let’s be real here: Everyone likes to stay up late and do all kinds of fun things, but sleep is so important if you want to avoid the grumpies. No one likes to be all sleepy in the morning and have your mom and dad yelling for you to get up. So avoid all the grumpies and shouties: Get plenty of rest so you can wake up and be happy!

Your blood will get going and your body will feel better. Don’t be lazy! Stretch for happiness.

Quiet time in the morning is wonderful. Just look out your window and appreciate the trees. Nature always brings a smile to our faces!

Be silly! Tell jokes! Tickle your little sister! Just make someone else laugh. Keep the jokes simple, though. Tricky jokes can fail in the morning.

Put on your favorite song and dance your tooshy off! Dancing=happiness

There is nothing worse than rushing around in the morning trying to find what you need- that is definitely going to make your morning stressful and make you a grumpus. Just pack your bag, lay out your clothes, and look at your calendar for the next day before you go to bed. An organized morning means less mean mom faces, and that is happiness.

You are awesome, so just be you! If you know that you are awesome, and remind yourself that you are awesome, you are sure to do more awesome things. If you doubt yourself throughout the day, just whisper a little reminder: Don’t forget to be awesome. Awesomeness is happiness. 11

Sports Programs

10

What to Keep in Mind When Choosing After-School Activities for Your KidsKids are back in school and you wonder how to keep them engaged, while limiting the time they spend online and playing video games? The best way is through sports. Registering your children for a sports program helps them stay active, meet new people, and learn new skills. It may even introduce them to a lifelong passion.

In Bali there are many sports on offer. Based on their age and interest, your kids could be:

• playingtennis• soccer• beachvolleyball• swimming• surfing• horsebackriding• orevenpracticingspecialyogaor

tai chi for kids!

However, before you decide which program or club to choose, consider the following factors for each option:Is it convenient? Can you manage the practice/game schedule? How far is it from your house? Will your child be able to keep up with his or her other commitments, such as homework,

family meals, religious practice, etc.? Can you afford it? Remember that registration fees may be just the beginning. You may also need to purchase equipment, special clothing/uniform or cover travel costs.

Are the staff and coaches properly trained? Do they know how to work with children? Are they certified in first aid and other safety procedures? Are their language skills sufficient for effective communication?

Good sports clubs usually have a good reputation, and word of mouth is a powerful marketing tool. They let everyone have a go, and not just

the most talented. No one wants to see their kid sitting on the bench all year, growing more disenchanted than skilled at their sport. So before you send your kids off to play, make sure that in addition to the fun and exercise factor, the program you’ve chosen provides a safe and inspiring environment for your child’s overall development.

GO GREEN

11

Eco-Friendly Cleaning Supplies that Protect Your Home and the Planet The green movement has inspired us to change a lot of our habits in an effort to be kinder to the environment. But many techniques for green living are safer for us and our families, too.

Toxic and harmful chemicals

One of the times we use the most toxic chemicals is when we’re cleaning our houses. Cleaning products contain many toxic ingredients, but that’s what’s said to kill germs and bacteria and get rid of dirt.

Even just breathing in the fumes of cleaning products can be harmful to your health, and those fumes also pollute the air. When washed down the drain, these toxic chemicals can seep into the ground and poison the earth. There are negative long-term health effects from repeated exposure to many of these chemicals, and yet despite all these negatives we continue to use them in our homes. Why? Because they do a good job of cleaning.

Can green products compare?

With more green cleaning products appearing on the shelves of Bali shops, you may be wondering: Should you make the switch? Are eco-friendly cleaning products effective?

One of the main reasons we purchase toxic cleaning products is that they disinfect our surfaces by killing germs. Most green cleaners are not as effective disinfectants. However, disinfecting agents aren’t really necessary. In today’s germ-phobic world, we’re made to believe that we need to kill bacteria. In reality, whether you clean with green or toxic products, you are removing germs from your surfaces. There is actually no need to kill them, too. In this way, green cleaners are just as effective.

They will remove bacteria from your home, and that’s enough to keep you and your family safe from germs. If you’re still worried, some green cleaning ingredients like tea tree oil are natural disinfectants.

Effective alternatives

Some of the eco-friendly products now available in Bali include 100% natural household cleansers and laundry

detergents that are made with essential oils offering anti-bacterial, anti-fungal & natural cleansing properties. They are economical as they are made in concentrated form, and you only need to use a small amount to clean your clothes and home completely naturally.

Other worthy replacement for your ordinary cleaning supplies is a microfiber cloth. This highly durable material can hold up to seven times its weight in water. Unlike many other types of cloths that smear dirt across the surface you are trying to clean, the microfiber cloths act like bionic sponges removing the dirt and bacteria to leave you with a clean, highly polished surface.

In important areas of your home like bathrooms or kitchen, microfiber cloths remove 99% of the bacteria from surfaces. They can also reduce up to 90% the consumption of cleaning chemicals resulting in a cleaner, healthier home.

PlastikDetox Bali is a campaign that seeks to reward small businesses in Bali that are willing to reduce their environmental impact--namely by stopping or reducing substantially their use of plastic bags. The program is free of charge and is open to any business.

Eco-friendly products available in Bali include 100% natural household cleansers from brands such as Bona and Bali Asli.

SERVICE SHOWCASE

12

By Marc-Antoine Dunais

Choosing from a buffet-style array of enticing dishes at Warung Kecil in Sanur, a customer orders a custom-made nasi campur (mixed rice) and then reminds the staff that this is for take-away. “No plastic bag?” asks the customer as she is given a box with her food. “Sorry, we don’t use plastic bags,” says the staff with a smile, pointing to a sticker on the window emblazoned with the words PlastikDetox Bali.

Plastic-free success story

Warung Kecil, a small but successful eatery that attracts a dedicated clientele fond of healthy but good value Indonesian food (along with a spattering of paninis, cakes and salads), is one of the small businesses that have joined PlastikDetox, a campaign that grew from a concern

about the colossal amount of plastic that is used – and promptly discarded – in Bali every day.

The effort is paying off: Novie the owner of Warung Kecil, estimates that they are saving up to 30 straws and 10 plastic bags per day – that’s thousands of plastic items kept out of the waste stream in one year.

Efforts rewarded

On a small island that is heaving under the weight of more than 4 million people, and with very basic waste management and recycling facilities in place, the folks behind the campaign decided that something had to be done for businesses to reduce their “plastic footprint”. Rather than focus on large malls and supermarkets, the campaign has targeted small

businesses that are more nimble in changing the way they operate. And to entice them to make this “green” commitment, PlastikDetox has sought to highlight their efforts (where successful) through Bali’s thriving media, generating valuable exposure for their business.

As of July 2013, PlastikDetox members include a couple of stores (Satvika Bhoga, Fair Trade Shop), cafes and restaurants (Maya Cafe, Manik Organik, Warung Kecil, Peekaboo, Batu Jimbar, Tandjung Sari), a laundry (Eco Laundry) and a bakery (Monsieur Spoon). More are set to join in the next few months.

What it takes

This does not mean reducing the use of plastic bags and straws comes without growing pains. When your priority is to satisfy your customer, there is a strong urge to meet all their needs--even if it involves packing

their order in a styrofoam box inside a plastic bag. PlastikDetox volunteers have spent hours training staff and talking with cafe, store and restaurant owners to help manage customer expectations.

In most cases, the phasing out of plastic bags has been a gradual process, with the inevitable hiccups along the way. Novie recalls having to deal with an irate customer who was adamant that she was entitled to a plastic bag. Thankfully, extreme cases such as this one are few and far between, and over time customers respond positively to PlastikDetox members’ efforts to reduce the amount of needless plastic waste in Bali.

Small Businesses AdoptPlastic-Free Diet

But if you can’t use plastic bags or straws, then what do you replace them with? The answer varies from one place to another. Monsieur Spoon sells reusable bags. Cafe Maya serves drinks with reusable, sterilized glass straws. Cafe Batu Jimbar relies on spoons. Admittedly, environment-friendly and cost-effective packaging solutions are limited, but the bottom line for PlastikDetox is the need to create new habits: drinking without a straw is an option, and bringing your own bag when shopping could in fact become part of your routine.

PlastikDetox is more of a slow tide than a wave, but the important thing is that it does not slow down.

Batukaru Restaurant Dishes Up Sensational Food with Peace of Mind for Dessert

A recent addition to the Bali restaurant scene, Batukaru Restaurant & Bar is certainly not a place you go for a quick lunch. It’s a place where not only food is savored, but where the entire experience is to be relished.

L ocated just 30 minutes north of the city of Tabanan, the restaurant and hotel complex

in which it is located boast some of Bali’s most unspoiled views. With 180-degree vistas of rice terraces surrounded by tropical forest and Mount Agung sitting in the distance, there’s nothing to distract you from the natural beauty around you, except maybe a singing bird or two.

Make it a day trip

While Batukaru Restaurant & Bar is what most would consider off the beaten track, it’s certainly worth the trip. You’ll feel more relaxed even before you get there, as you make your way through picturesque rice fields and leaving behind the hustle and bustle of more developed areas of the island. Perched on the slopes of Mount Batukaru, the restaurant and hotel offer peace, quiet and pleasantly cooler temperatures and fresh air.

What’s cooking

Once you’ve taken a moment to absorb the beauty around you, it’s time to eat! An extensive menu offers

A harmonious weekend getaway

In fact, one meal at Batukaru Restaurant & Bar may just not be enough! In that case, you can opt to turn a daytrip into a leisurely weekend by spending the night at the hotel, where 18 luxury rooms and 6 one-bedroom villas will provide all the comforts you could ask for. Why not start with a gourmet breakfast as the natural wonders around you wake up to a new day, then spend the morning lounging by the pool, enjoy a delicious lunch on the terrace and end the

ali is experiencing a new revolution in organic growing. Local farmers are increasingly

aware of the impact & costs of using harmful chemicals and are choosing to return to traditional farming techniques. A wider choice of healthy organic foods is flowing into Indonesia’s markets, inspiring new restaurants and health food shops across the island.

One of the superfoods currently high on the list for health conscious consumers is wheatgrass. Its benefits have been investigated for decades though many are still hesitant. In this issue we are showcasing wheatgrass as a product well worth exploring.

BENEFITS

Most people don’t eat the wheatgrass itself, because it’s tough to digest. Most often, the leaves are crushed and squeezed to make wheatgrass juice. WHEATGRASS JUICE increases red blood-cell count and lowers blood pressure. It is also claimed to cleanse the blood, organs and gastrointestinal tract of debris.

Wheatgrass also stimulates metabolism and the body’s enzyme systems by enriching the blood. It also aids in reducing blood pressure by dilating the blood pathways throughout the body.

Horoscopes and astrology began with the ancient Greeks some thousands of years ago. At that time, people thought that earth was the centre of the universe, and that the sun was a moving star -- theory that would prevail until Copernicus. Priests, observing the skies, imagined that some of the stars formed specific designs – a lion (LEO), a young maid (VIRGO) – and gave them the names of the twelve constellations presently known as the zodiacal signs. The motion of the planets crossing the zodiacal signs gave birth to a system of interpretation and predictions which were considered, in these very ancient times, as messages from the Gods.

The following is a modern interpretation of what the stars hold for you this fortnight.

What an energy! Nothing frightens you, but be careful, do not take any risk. Try and be more patient with your loved ones, they do not always share your enthusiasm for dangerous sports. Control your impulsiveness, relax, and take the good side of life.

Jupiter stays in your sign for a few months. This planet of success and expansion should help you get out of your shell, and consider life with a renewed confidence. Stand up for your opinions, be a little selfish, take care of yourself and of your appearance.

Lost in your dreams? Doubts about life, love? Take some time just for you, you need rest. Maybe it’s time to plan your vacation, and to do just what you want. Take along these books you never have time to read, and leave! When you come back, the pending issues will be solved.

All your energies are concentrated on your professional life. Do not forget that you have family and friends, too! And that the principle of pleasure is as important as the principle of reality.

Stimulated by Mars, you are full of expectations and desires. Saturn will help you make the right decisions. Use this fortnight to burn some calories, take care of your body and try to stay in shape. You are in Bali! How about a relaxing Balinese massage?

Love is the great matter these days. But as usual you are a little frightened to be trapped. Why not let go for a while, and enjoy what life brings generously to you?

Action! A wonderful trigon of Uranus and Mercury to your Sun gives you the skills to develop your creativity. And Venus in a friendly sign will help you give more attention to your partner, as life is not made of work only!

Financial discussions in view? Do not hesitate, and move forward. Ask for a salary increase or a credit to start your own business at last. All your actions in this direction are protected.

The Moon and the Sun still staying in your sign for a few days will add to your natural charm and ability to seduce. Uranus in good aspect in a friendly sign could bring you unexpected opportunities between this summer and your next birthday, or help solve pending matters.

Nothing will resist your positive energy. And with the long-lasting help of Jupiter and Saturn staying in friendly signs, you will be able to jump over mountains. Do not forget to plan a few days of rest, you will need them.

The Sun enters your sign on August 23rd, as well as Mercury, the master planet of your sign. This will give you more self-confidence. Take advantage of this beautiful and positive period to communicate, to give a new impulse to your career as well as to your private life.

PiscesThe ideal world of your dreams does not exist. But your actions will make it better. And romantic love that is in sight will help you to carry out the various responsibilities and tasks you are in charge of.

Spanish Designer Maria R Brings Sparkle and Top-Shelf Fashion Jewelry to Bali

Some of the hottest trends in fashion this year come dressed in the sassiness of the 1920’s and incarnations of “global glamour”. Exotic batik prints, fringes and statement pieces are all being seen on the runways.

Dare to shine!

Spanish fashion jewelry designer, Maria R, is right on trend with her new collection of bold, eye-catching pieces that are perfect for the free spirited jetsetter or boho chic woman who loves to stand out from the crowd.

Her bold and funky pieces have been well-loved by the rich and famous from Spanish TV presenters and socialites to Hollywood celebrities, appearing in music videos, TV shows and on runways. They have also been continuously featured on the pages of European fashion magazines from Vogue to Elle and beyond.

But the great news is that you won’t have to fly to Europe, The Middle East

or Australia -- where Maria R jewelry is sold -- as it can now be found in select boutiques in Bali!

Bali for inspiration and quality craftsmanship

In fact, following a hugely successful 11-year career in Spain, Maria decided to move her artisan manufacturing to Bali in 2011, entrusting her unique and elaborate designs in thae skilled hands of a local family.

Even though she hasn’t yet taken the plunge herself, she visits Bali about three times a year to oversee the manufacturing process and, most importantly to soak in all the inspiration she can. All her recent collections have been entirely designed

here in Bali, where Maria surrounds herself by all her favorite things: lush rice fields, Balinese architecture, vivid colors, smiling faces and lots of much-needed spontaneity.

A style that’s fun, lavish and handmade, all at the same time

Maria R’s fashion jewelry gives expression to the sensibilities of women who, like herself, are not afraid to let their inner child shine through and who embrace life to the fullest.

Tempted?

While you could also pick up a piece of Maria R exquisite handmade collection at Liberty of London or at the International Jewelry Exhibition in Paris, it may be much more convenient to drop by one of the boutiques inside some of Bali’s 5-star resorts:

An avid traveler with passion for the underwater wonders, her fun-loving nature is clearly visible in her designs, use of color and trendsetting looks.

Yet, in addition to eye-catching designs, something that has always set Maria R apart is her choice of materials. She swaps gold and silver for a more versatile, allergy-free and tarnish-resistant brass, while trading posh diamonds for nearly equally sparkling Swarovski crystals. As a result, her designs are lavish and extravagant in a way conventional jewelry could never afford.

Skin Pigmentation:How to Get Rid of Those Dark Spots on Your Face

Lightening creams come with price tags that range from IDR 17,000 to over a million.

Living in sunny locations such as Bali, we are constantly exposed to intense sunlight. That’s when skin hyperpigmentation, age spots, freckles and sun damage can become a problem.

What is skin pigmentation?

Skin pigmentation is the result of abnormal production and deposition of melanin by the melanocytes (pigment cells). The number of melanocytes present in our skin will determine our skin color. Production of melanin is also dependent on UV or sun exposure, and is a natural protective mechanism of the skin.

Hyperpigmentation, or areas that are darker than the rest of the skin, result from excess and disordered melanin production and deposition.

What causes dark spots?

Several factors can contribute to the appearance of dark spots on the skin, particularly aging as well as overexposure to sunlight, exposure to other ultraviolet rays and lack of vitamins A and C in the body. Some hormones can also trigger skin pigmentation in pregnant women and those who use contraceptive pills.

Skin lightening creams can help remove existing skin pigmentation and remedy uneven skin tone. The most common active ingredients of these potions include hydroquinone, kojic acid, papain and licorice.

Professional solutions

When protecting your face from sunlight and regular application of lightening products aren’t enough, it’s time to visit a dermatologist or medical spa. Some of the professional treatments proved to effectively diminish and eliminate skin pigmentation include chemical peels, microdermabrasion, photofacial intense pulse light laser as well as new generation liquid nitrogen treatments.

Liquid nitrogen

Liquid nitrogen is used as a treatment for removing freckles, pigment spots and warts from any area of the body. All that is involved is the application

of liquid nitrogen (a very cold liquid similar to dry ice) on the area to be treated for a few seconds. This may have to be repeated once or twice over the following weeks if pigmentation is deep. The result is a perfectly clear skin with no sign of the pigmented area.

Acid peel

This treatment consists of skin lightening Fruit Acid (AHA) Peels which contain hydroquinone. Eight to twelve light peels are performed over a period of three months, combined with topical AHA skin products to enhance the effectiveness of the skin lightening program. Faster results can also be achieved when the treatment is combined with a vitamin ‘A’ Retinoic acid-based cream.

Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is a gentle exfoliation treatment that uses crystal particles brushed onto the skin to loosen the outer layer of dead, sun damaged cells. It stimulates new skin growth and results in fresh and more radiant complexion. In addition to treating hyperpigmentation and age spots, microdermabrasion will also reduce enlarged pores, revitalize dull skin, erase fine lines and improve acne scars.

Laser treatment

The effects of laser therapy are similar to those of a chemical peel or microdermabrasion — the layers of pigmented skin are stripped away — but the laser method is more precise, since the doctor can control the intensity of the laser and its degree of penetration.

There are basically two types of laser light therapy used to treat hyperpigmentation: IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) and lasers. Both use the same principle to remove unwanted pigment; however, IPL emits multiple wavelengths of light, while lasers emit light of a single wavelength. Depending on the type of discoloration you’re dealing with, you may need one treatment or several. For example, age spots typically respond very quickly, but birthmarks often require repeated zapping.

DIY remedies

The easiest, yet the most important, way to avoid pigmentation is to protect the surface of the skin from sunlight. Daily use of broad spectrum sunscreen lotion should be your ultimate beauty ritual, while a hat and sunglasses your ultimate fashion accessories. Sun bath lovers should choose the morning hours when the effect of sun rays is less intense.

GO FOR QUALITY MATERIALS

When choosing your outdoor furniture, go for pieces that are robust, low-maintenance and most importantly, weather proof.

While teak wood is the most common material, wicker is gaining ground offering high quality, durability and visual appeal at an affordable price.

Wicker furniture is made from thin, slender branches woven around a frame to create variously shaped items. The wicker itself can be made from any number of materials including willow, bamboo, rattan, reed, or synthetic materials. Wickerwork doesn’t require the same level of skill as, say, fashioning wrought iron, but it does involve intricate craftsmanship.

Lightweight yet sturdy

Wicker furniture is lightweight yet its unique woven design also makes it incredibly sturdy. If you frequently

pull out extra chairs for guests who visit, you’ll love the versatility of wicker outdoor furniture.

Durable

Though the natural materials used in this type of outdoor furniture make it environmentally friendly, wicker that doesn’t have a waterproof coating can also deteriorate quickly when exposed to rain or direct sunlight. Look for wicker furniture with aluminum frames for added durability and consider resin wicker that is resilient even in the humid Bali climate.

Classic design that goes with any styleWhile the word “wicker” may bring images of white wicker garden furniture to mind, you can actually find

this iconic design in cream, tan, brown, black and even olive green shades. Wicker furniture can look classic when you add crisp striped cushions to white chairs and benches, but it looks incredibly modern when paired with vivid orange and sage green pillows.

Besides the fun it will bring, a nicely decorated outdoor area will contribute greatly to the value of your property. So invest in quality pieces when creating your Balinese garden oasis.

There are plenty of outdoor furniture manufacturers all around Bali, so it won’t be difficult to find all your garden favorites.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT PIECES

So many different models are available that you will literally be spoilt for choice.

Moon day bed

A must-have piece is the traditional Bali Moon Day Bed (as pictured on our cover). It’s comfortable and spacious enough to lounge with your loved one as you enjoy a balmy Balinese afternoon.

Another great piece is a large outdoor dining table to take full advantage of Bali’s perfect climate. Go for a robust piece that will comfortably accommodate your guests, friends and family.

is solid and the chair is usually fitted with comfortable cushions for you to relax with your favorite book or cocktail. Choose a top quality piece that will not only complement the rest of your outdoor furniture, but may well become your favorite spot in the garden!

BENEFITS

In addition, LED lights are more environmentally friendly as they consume less power than either CFLs or incandescent bulbs. These lights require about 8-12 watts of power compared to around 15 watts required by comparable CFLs and 60 watts required by incandescent bulbs. Lower power consumption and a consequent decline in the cost of lighting one’s home or office space is a significant advantage.

LEDs also have much larger life spans, which along with their lower maintenance costs ensure that the higher upfront investment in them gets
