LAST CHANCE!!!

Teacher Event

Pre-Bids Due March 7!

Each year, Balboa's teachers volunteer their time for fun, out-of-the-classroom experiences with their students that we auction off to benefit Balboa's enrichment programs. This year's slate has more than 35 events, including a '60s tie-dye party, Cinco De Mayo festivities, a rousing game of Capture the Flag, professional baseball games, a trip to Jump Sky High, and many more. For a full list of the 2014 Teacher Events, visit our website at www.balboaparents.org/teacher-events.html or check out the 2/19 E-Backpack, which you can find at www.balboaparents.org/e-backpack.html. Pre-bids are due March 7, with the final auction at the Festival of the Arts on Saturday, March 15. These events are very popular, and there will be many people bidding on them – keep that in mind as you make your bid. In the event of a tie, the winner is the earliest bidder, so get yours in now! If you have any questions, contact Teacher Event Chair Maggie McNally at [email protected].

Wednesday, March 5, 2014 Dear Families of Balboa Magnet, Balboa Magnet would like to provide an update to the rollout of the Common Core Technology Project’s iPad Phase 2 which will provide each student with access to a personal computing device to allow for a more individualized, interactive and information-rich learning environment that is aligned with Common Core State Standards. The district has decided that in order to be fully prepared for the deployment of student devices, teachers at Phase 2 schools will be receiving their iPads in mid-March and students will each receive a device at the beginning of the 2014-2015 school year. This will allow time for teachers to become familiar with the one-to-one devices as well as attend trainings from Apple representatives and the curriculum developers that provide the downloadable Common Core aligned lessons and resources. Additional information will be shared as it becomes available so please be on the lookout for all school communications in regards to CCTP Phase 2! Thank you. Jana Davenport Principal

Breakfast in the Classroom

Beginning April 1, 2014

Dear Parents,

Beginning on April 1, 2014, our school will be participating in an innovative new program called “Breakfast in the

Classroom.” Just as the name implies, breakfast will be served to each student right in the classroom! All students will

have an opportunity during the first 10 minutes of class to eat breakfast with their classmates and obtain the fuel needed to

get through the morning ready to learn. Breakfast is provided at NO CHARGE and participation is strictly voluntary.

The new program replaces our breakfast service. Therefore, March 28, 2014 is the last day of regular breakfast service.

Why Breakfast in the Classroom?

Recent studies have shown that when schools provide

an in-classroom breakfast or a grab ‘n go type of

meal, their students will:

Increase their academic performance

Decrease absenteeism and tardiness

Increase their attention span and focus

Reduce their visits to the nurse because of hunger

Superintendent Deasy and the LAUSD Board of Education are committed to providing students and schools

with resources that will help achieve academic success. Breakfast in the Classroom has assisted students in

New York City, Houston, Chicago, Cincinnati, Washington, DC, Boston, San Diego, Compton and many other

communities. We want to ensure every student in LAUSD starts the day ready to learn.

How does it work?

Each day, breakfasts are packaged in insulated bags and labeled by classroom. Student monitors roll the bags to

their classroom. Each student will take his/her own complete meal. Students eat while the teacher takes morning

roll, reviews previously assigned work and reads announcements. This normally takes about ten minutes. Trash is

put into a trash can inside their classroom. Students tie off the bag, leave it in the trash can and place it outside the

classroom. Students return the rolling insulated bags to the kitchen. No food is left inside the classroom.

What foods are served in Breakfast in the Classroom?

Milk or juice is served daily. Entrées are nourishing and easy to eat quickly and include popular breakfast

items such as cold cereal, blueberry muffins and strawberry yogurt. On “Hot Food Days” a hot entrée such as

a breakfast burrito is served. Café LA menus are available at http://cafe-la.lausd.net/cafe_la_menu.

If your child requires a special diet to be followed per doctor’s orders, a form can be filled out and

arrangements made to address your child’s needs. Forms are available at: http://cafe-

la.lausd.net/parents/special_diets

Please note: If you do not want your child to participate, they do not have to eat the school breakfast provided. Let your

teacher know that you do not want your child to participate.

Share this exciting news with your child and be ready on April 1, 2014 for the start of this new program! If you have any

questions, please feel free to call us at 818-349-4801. Thank you for your support!

Sincerely,

Jana Davenport
