BALABHAVAN KUMMI DANCE CAMP CONDUCTED BY MRS. LALITHA KRISHNAMOORTHY
July 11th to Aug 8th Five Weeks; Dates: July 11th, 18th, 25th Fee: Balabhavan Member$20 Non Member $30 August 1st, 8th For: children Ages 5 and Above Saturdays: 4.00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Limited to 16 students
Kummi is one of the most important and ancient forms of village dances in Tamilnadu. It originated when there were no musical instruments, with the participants clapping their hands to keep the rhythm. The dancers stand in a circle and dance with slow, mincing but varying steps to the accompaniment of clapping and singing punctuated with pirouettes and hops to lilting songs. The Kummi dances have several variations according to the social and ceremonial occasion and the communities of the dancers. In its gaiety, social function, and ritual aspect, the Kummi reminds of the Ghumar of Rajasthan, the Garba of Gujarat and the Rasa of Uttar Pradesh. The dancers execute many choreographical floor designs and patterns through collective footwork and movements. There are many varieties of Kummi, such as, Poonthatti Kummi, Deepa Kummi, Kulavai Kummi, Kadir Kummi and Mulaipari Kummi. This dance is usually performed during temple festivals, Pongal, the harvest festival and family functions. We would like to thank Mrs Lalitha Krishnamoorthy who has kindly volunteered to teach the dance camp for the summer. Lalitha has learnt Bharathanatyam from Mr. Adyar K. Lakshman for 7 years and during her training with him has performed various folk dances with his troupe. The children will be dancing Kumi to the song "Gopiyargal gokulathil". Duration of the complete dance is 4 mins.
Children Enrolled in the program will be able to perform the dance after the Ganesh Puja at the Shiva Vishnu Temple on August 22nd 2009[details to be provided at a later date] ________________________________________________________________________________________
