Q: I got pulled over and the police found a joint in my car. They gave me a ticket. What should I do?

A: Possession of less than an ounce of marijuana is a misdemeanor punishable as an infraction. You can only get a fine and not jail time. You could just take the fine and get it over with. The court or D.A. might also offer you a counseling program, which, if you complete it, would result in the dismissal of the charges. Or you could consult with a Public Defender or private attorney to see if your rights were violated during the stop, which could result in the evidence being suppressed and the case dismissed.

The music industry had bet-ter get ready, because thereis a new band in town. Bak-ersfield band SHILO hasbeen around for quite a few

years; however, a recent adjustmentto their line-up has forever changedthis band for the better. With a newvocalist and new bass player thesefive college students are hitting theindustry with everything theyve got. After the departure of SHILO's formersinger and bass player, the bandfound itself dead in the water. Butshortly afterwards they recruited longtime friend and band manager, NickMihalopoulos, to sing lead vocals andRob Vargas to play bass. In a time when SHILO seemed to befading into the abyss of Bakersfieldbands, they reformed, regrouped, andnow they are forging ahead with a new

line up and new music.SHILO guitarist, Brandon Boggs, saidthat the band has overcome tremen-dous obstacles in order to get towhere they are today.Any other band that has gone throughover 20 line-up changes would havegiven up by now, said Boggs. Wefinally have a line-up where everyoneis committed to making this happenfor real. The band also includes Matt Gilbert(guitar-vocals) and Sam McKinney(drums).Currently SHILO is overcoming yetanother obstacle distance. Lead vocalist Mihalopoulos is finish-ing college in Saint George, Utah. Inorder to continue practicing and writ-ing new songs, Nick has been makingthe seven hour drive from Utah to Bak-ersfield nearly every weekend. Nick said that the drive isn't that bad,but that scheduling can be difficult.

Being a college student, Im alreadycrunched for time, he said. I get inthe car on Friday after class and startheading south. Im usually back in mydorm room in Utah by Sunday aroundmidnight. That leaves little time forhomework. The commitment that this band hasshown is finally paying off. March 25marks a big show for SHILO as theywill be opening for The Used at TheDome! The SHILO guys have alsoannounced a recent partnership withThru The Roof Records, and is liningup a summer tour with stops throughCalifornia into Colorado. These local boys have determinationand the drive to go a long way. Withrocking guitar solos and influencesfrom nearly every musical genre thisband really has what it takes. Fans willbe able to order their debut EP in thesummer of 2009.www.myspace.com/shilo

T ip #1 - Pre-Flop Raising: Ifyoure a no-limit poker playersuch as myself, you probablyfeel the anguish of watching yourfolded cards make the best prettyoften.

    Sometimes this will happen

often in the same game, whichmoves you to start playing badhands because you figure, crapcards are hitting the board. This isa huge mistake to make and isoften considered tilting yourself.

You must understand thatthroughout your poker careeralmost every hand you are dealtwill make the best hand at least

once. Never go into a pot withoutbeing ready to go all in with thecards you hold.

Develop a range, choose cer-tain types of hand you will not foldpre-flop, but may fold if raised.

I personally have three types ofranges: hands I will never fold pre-flop (pocket aces through jacks),hands I will call the blinds but not a

raised pre-flop (A-9 unsuited orpocket 6s) and hands I considerthe bare minimum to call theblinds with (9-10 suited, pocket2s).

If you develop this range andmemorize it, you will find yourselfwinning more pots and not caring ifyour folded 7-9 off suit just made astraight.

Bakersfields Pacific Theaterrecently hosted the StevenSoderbergh bio-pic Che (Road-show Edition). Presented by IFCFilms, the 2008 film is based on

the book, Reminiscences of the CubanRevolutionary War, by Ernesto Che Gue-vara. Produced in two parts, the movie is257 minutes long.

Along with the films, viewers were given aprogram souvenir filled with great pictures, culminating both parts of the film. Moreincredible than the film, was the fact that itwas being shown in Bakersfield!

By description, part one (also known asArgentine,) of this two part series opensin the year 1964, as Argentine-born revolu-tionary Ernesto Che Guevara, (played byactor Benicio del Toro) travels to New YorkCity to address the United Nations aboutthe political state of Cuba.

As it progresses, the film references Gue-varas travels alongside a young Fidel Cas-tro, from Mexico City to his military guerrillacampaign on the island of Cuba and emi-nent rise. The film includes detailed scenesdramatizing the organization and leading hisfighters, Cuban Guajiros - themale/female peasant fighting forces of theCuban revolution under the command ofGuevara and Castro. To be expected,Argentine ends with Castros subsequenttriumph seizing of power in Cuba over dicta-tor, Fulgencio Batista.

In part two (titled Guerrilla), the filmtakes a rather different tone and spirit,

jumping forward seven years, skipping outon his time as a Minister in Castros govern-ment and his abortive adventures in theCongo. Compared to the earlier film, thissecond films plot is rapid. Focusing only onChes final year in Bolivia, (1966-67) beforebeing captured and executed. Its alsochronologically straightforward, tracking hisgradual downfall.

Aside from his activism, very little of Gue-varas personal life is detailed - which isboth a little surprising and somewhat exas-perating, especially when one considers thecombined duration of both films is almostfour and a half hours.

For the casual viewer, one has to haveprior knowledge on Guevara's life in order tofollow the film. There is nothing inherentlywrong with the filmed biography, which limitsitself to just one or two particular aspects ofGuevara's diverse life.

Watching a hero of the people suffer forthe causes he believes while coughing andcatching his breath in mostly dismal condi-tions was exhausting to say the least. Bythe end of the film, there is a long-winded-ness tone, and the audience looks for reliefof the main character who suffers fromchronic asthma. But this is a Hollywood pro-duction, and director Soderbergh should becommended for his attention to detail, bycasting real-life villagers, alongside A-listactors (Matt Damon, Catalina SandinoMoreno, Franka Potente). The set locations -New York, Mexico, Spain, and Puerto Ricoalso amazingly recreate the time period real-istically with sets and neighborhoods madeto reconstruct Cubas ghettos and islandbeauty. Most memorable are both films

sequences of Guevaras guerrillaarmy training and battling in the jun-gles of Cuba and Bolivia, especiallythe climactic battles near the end ofeach film - with action packed west-ern shoot-out style sequences.

As I am familiar with Chesactivism, I wished the filmmakerwould have delved further into theobscure intimacies of Guevaraslife. Others may feel the filmdoes not question his militantmeans often or stronglyenough. Let us not forget - his-tory always has two sides: oneof the victorious and one ofthe defeated. One of the bestquotes from the film is whenGuevara tells one of his men,To survive here, to win ... youhave to live as if youvealready died.

Actor Benicio Del Toro was awarded thePrix dinterpretation masculine (or BestActor Award,) at the 2008 Cannes FilmFestival in France, but the movie wasignored altogether at this years AcademyAwards. The snub was seen in the eyes ofmany as a signal of the ongoing argumentbetween those who view Guevara as hero orassassin, especially among anti-Castrogroups and radical political groups aroundthe world.

Despite the lengthiness of the film-watching experience, it is recommendedthat both films be seen back-to-back. Pre-sented in English & Spanish with subtitles. For more info on the film, visit:www.stevensoderbergh.net

The legendary Saturday NightLive house band, Bob Dylan,Jefferson Airplane, JeffersonStarship, Phil Lesh &

Friends, Hot Tuna, Boz Scaggs, Bon-nie Raitt. Any of these ring a bell?

What if I was to tell you that pastand present members of thesebands will be playing at Fishlips Bar,1517 18th St. together Wednes-day, March 25 as part of the samegroup - Moonalice? Its true! This all-star musical act will be passingthrough town amid their currentsold-out U.S. tour.

Follow my musical lead on thisstory

During the past 10 years, I havebecome quite acquainted with bothPete Sears and Barry Sless throughtheir sideman-efforts in various Bay-area live acts. As an avid fan of gui-tar player Steve Kimock, I recallhearing ample compliments direct-ed towards Sears piano playing inKimocks variousband line-ups. Lit-tle did I know,Kimock was

also a bass and accordion aficiona-do - nice!

Back in December 01, my friendMegan - wife of Soulajar drummerBrian Boozer, our bud Paul Royerand myself, were in San Francisco atthe beautiful Great American MusicHall to see our very first SteveKimock Band Show, featuring PeteSears on keyboards. Everythingabout the show transformed ourmusical minds forever, and Petesivory tickling definitely set the mood.Barry Sless was a name I wasntfamiliar with until seeing anotherKimock show in which the David Nel-son Band opened. David Nelson is afounding member of the New Ridersof the Purple Sage.

I attended the show with thesame crew, along with another mem-ber of Soulajar or two. I was com-pletely entranced by Sless pedal-steel playing. He played in a style Ihad only heard on recordings by thelikes of the Grateful Dead and Cros-by Stills Nash & Young (both pedalsteel parts recorded by Jerry Gar-cia). While it has country-tingedroots, there is a tonality and phras-

ing that is completely unique. Many musicians such

    as guitarist Greg

Leisz (Bill Frisell, K.D. Lang, Emmy-lou Harris) and Eric Heywood (RayLaMontagne, The Pretenders) havetaken this airy and mood-settingapproach to pedal steel playing.

Meet the Moonalice tribe:Hardwood Moonalice aka G.E.

Smith (bass, guitars, vocals) haspreviously performed as the leaderof the Saturday Night Live houseband; lead guitarist with Hall &Oates and Bob Dylan, among manyother artists; and was a member ofthe Flying Other Brothers.

Sir Sinjin Moonalice aka PeteSears (bass, keyboards, accordion, vocals) has been playing for morethan 40 years, with Rod Stewart,John Lee Hooker, Jefferson Star-ship, Hot Tuna, various members ofthe Grateful Dead, and was a mem-ber of the Flying Other Brothers.

Jess H. Moonalice aka BarrySless (bass, guitar, pedal steel, vocals) is a founding member of theDavid Nelson Band; has previously

performed with Cowboy Jazz, King-fish, Flying Other Brothers; and stillplays with Phil Lesh & Friends.

Blue Moonalice aka AnnMcNamee (bass, percussion, vocals) has a doctorate in MusicTheory, as well as more than 100self-penned songs in her portfolio. She was a member of the FlyingOther Brothers; she also recordswith Ann Atomic.

Chubby Wombat Moonaliceaka Roger McNamee (bass, guitar, vocals) has rocked by night with theFlying Other Brothers, while a day gigfinds him teaming with U2s Bono asa founding member of venture capi-tal firm Elevation Partners.

DawnMan Moonalice akaJimmy Sanchez (bass and drums) isa veteran player who has backedBoz Scaggs, Bonnie Raitt, Dr. Johnand many others worldwide, andwas also a member of the FlyingOther Brothers.

Yggdrassil Moonalice aka JackCasady (bass) is considered one ofthe foremost bassists in rock, bothas a member of Rock and Roll Hallof Famers Jefferson Airplane andHot Tuna, as well as having recordedwith Jimi Hendrix on Voodoo Chile.

Hit up Darkstar Records in Bak-ersfield to check out a plethora ofmusic featuring all of these artists

T he punk rock scene ofold. There was a timewhen it representedeverything mainstreammusic didnt. Punks wereanti-social and usually oftignored by the suits in themusic business, misunder-stood and considered toocontroversial.

In the eyes of many, thepunk movement created aclique that nonconformistswere only too eager to join.Eager to be labeled misfitsand wreak havoc on the ven-ues that hosted them bygrabbing chairs, tables andwhatever else they could pickup and throw at the stage, and themselves.

These teen rebels werealso considered hard-hittingand foul mouthed, some-

times displaying self-inflictedwounds on their bodies andspewing blood on the stagewhile shouting their lyrics toa packed room of fellowmisfits. Oh yeah, they wereall straight, too - girl lovin, sex lovin and straight punkrockin dudes.

That is, until Jon Ginoliand his band Pansy Divisioncame along...

If you dont who the hellwere talking about, heres aquick history lesson.

Pansy Division is an Amer-ican rock/punk band thatformed in San Francisco, Cali-fornia in 1991. Featuring pri-marily gay musicians andfocusing mostly on gay-relat-ed themes, Pansy Division is afounding example of theQueercore genre. - Wikipedia.

According to a pressrelease by Cleis Press pub-lishing, In his book, Deflow-

ered: My Life in Pansy Divi-sion, author Jon Ginoli setsoff on a journey of self-discov-ery and musical passion tobecome the founding mem-ber and guitarist of PansyDivision, the first out andproud queercore punk rockband to hit the semi-big time.

Set against the changingdecades of music, we followthe band from their inceptionin San Francisco, to theirsearch for a music label anda permanent drummer totheir current status as indierock icons. We see the highstouring with Green Day, andthe lows - homophobic fans -all the while striving foracceptance and success inthe world of rock. Repletewith the requisite tales ofsex, drugs, groupies, bandfights and label battles, thisrollicking memoir is also animpassioned account of stay-

ing true to the artistic visionof queer rock n roll.

    Need more convincing?How about this.

Ginoli is also a singer andsongwriter for Pansy Division, whose discography includes:Undressed, Deflowered,Wish Id Taken Pictures and

more. An Illinois native, hesplayed both dive bars andarenas, and his favorite coloris purple. When not on tourwith the band, he lives andworks in San Francisco.

The author/musician willbe at Barnes & Noble, 4001California Ave., on Tuesday,March 24 at 7 p.m. to signhis autobiography, Deflow-ered: My Life in Pansy Divi-sion. Jon will also signcopies of his CDs, which willalso be made available, aswell as his newest CD,That's So Gay!

*Pansy Division will NOTbe performing. This is a dis-cussion/book signing only!Seating will be first come, first served. Dont miss out!For more information call:631-2575.

Jon Ginoli: DefloweredFounder of legendary Pansy Division will be signing copies of his new book at B&N on 3/24!

T here is no doubt about it that tall skinny kid onthe keyboards can reallyplay!

If you are into the Bakers-field music scene, you have atleast heard of him. His name isChris Neufeld. He is 26 yearsold and has been playing keyssince he was 2. He has neverhad a lesson, all self-taught byjust listening, and he can tear itup.

He is a master of blues, rock, and country keyboards. He lays Merle and Elton all theway to Rush and ZZ Top.Pianos, organs, drums, bass, guitar and all of the solos, itdoesnt matter. He does it all.

Yep, thats my boy. He hasplayed with me in every band Iwas in since he was 7 yearsold. When he was young, heused to just stand and play. Butnow the monster is loose. Nowhe dances, claps with the audi-ence, and spins in placebehind his keys and comesaround without missing a note.He doesnt play much with dearold dad anymore. But thatsOK. He has moved on to playwith a much higher caliber ofmusician.

He plays with Monty Byromand his band (opened for BBKing), he plays with countrycrooner Randy Emmet with Tan-ner Byrom, Ron Mitchell andthe one and only ChuckSeaton. He plays vintageoldies and real country with thegreat Ray McDonald Band. Hehas played gigs with countryblues band Big House and satin for vacationing Jim Shawwith the Buckaroos at the Crys-tal Palace. Hes sat in with TheHeaters with Ed Berghoff andBilly Russell, and hes playedwith local guitar legend BunkySpurling. He never misses anote, never misses a gig.

Chris knows every rock songthat you can think of that hasbeen released from the 60son. Monty has tried to stump

him and hasnt done it yet. Iam with him constantly and Ihardly ever ask him a questionhe doesnt know the answer to.He is an authority on the Beat-les, the Beach Boys, and ELO,and a trivia master on everyother band you have ever heardof. He is a scary, scary, dudewith way too much info for onehead. Someday, his brain mightexplode!

So, needless to say, rightnow he is trying to make a liv-ing as a musician. He has adegree in Computer Informa-tion Systems (doesnt look likehe is going to be using thatmuch for awhile). When he isnot playing out and about hewrites and records music in ourhome studio. He usually playsall of the instruments and doesall of the recording and engi-neering. He has four albumson iTunes and countless othersongs that havent been com-pleted yet. We are working onsongs together right now. Hedoes most of his tracks in onetake. He has asked me to playon a few of his songs. He hasmade me redo the same guitarsolo countless times. You cando it better he says, and thenhe laughs. He is my son, and Ilove him, but I have thoughtabout taking him for the bigride.

So if you are out on the townand you hear a blazing key-board solo, odds are with youthat it is Chris. Go up and sayhi. He isnt much of a conversa-tionalist, but he always smilesand nods, even when he canthear a word you are saying.

His ears are ultra sensitiveto noise so he wears ear plugswhen he plays or when he is atsomeone elses show. Givehim a high five, as far as I knowa high five is still cool. Right?I think everybody still under-stands that move.

Im old and I might be out oftouch, but if I am, so is he. Hellknow what to do.

Bakersfields piano manTheres no challenge too tough for this hot local talent!

M y first experience of the KernScottish Gathering andGames included a friendlywoman with a stack of plastic shotglasses wedged in her bodice.

Smiling, she handed me one filledwith her family brew. Who am I to berude? Of course, I drank it! Ah, one ofthe many things I love about the Scot-tish Gathering and Games. Largemen tossing telephone poles, hugeturkey legs, a full ice cold cup of NewCastle, great music and good peopleall equal an awesome day.

From vendors selling your familytartan, to large swords, books, art,and really BIG knives, they have it all!

If traditional Scottish music anddancing is your thing, they have thattoo! The Scottish Gathering is familyfriendly. They have George the Giant, who was featured in the movie BigFish and on Americas Got Talent, who will do tricks like sword swallow-ing and walking on glass. You cancompete in the games as well, sobring it on!

After the gathering is over theyhave what is called a Ceilidh (Kay-lee). I like to call it an after party.Largely adult and they only sell 400tickets. Dinner is available, withmusic by The Wicked Tinkers, 1916,Tempest, and usually a surprise ortwo.

There is nothing like going to aCeilidh - good food, drinking a beer, ortwo, or three, and rushing the stageto dance as a wave of sound rushesover you.

Thats what its all about - beingtogether in a fun and welcomingatmosphere. Its Scottish hospitalityat its best - no argie blargie allowed!

Pre-sale tickets for the Ceilidh canbe purchased online at the gamesofficial Web site: www.kernscot.comor at the Clubhouse,1985 AirportDrive, World Records, at Coffee andStockdale or at the Society Tent theday of the event.

Please remember if youre going tobe drinking have a designated driver!
