When the Waterbury yeshiva community was founded 13 years ago, the handful of families who settled here were young and idealistic, with very young children. Over a decade later, the community is 180 families strong and children have grown to teenagers. We needed a girls’ high school, to educate our daughters in the healthy and supportive Torah environment that Waterbury offers.
Community members responded to the challenge. Parents, educators and community leaders volunteered their time and energy to creating a girls’ high school that would both provide a stellar education for the girls, and enable continued growth of our community. Along with generous support from Torah Umesorah and the Jewish Federation of Western Connecticut, the dream has become a reality—a living, breathing, thriving educational oasis for high school girls in Connecticut.

Bais Yaakov of Waterbury provides girls with both an outstanding Torah education and high-caliber secular studies education—all in a wholesome and supportive environment. BYW motivates students to pursue excellence in limudei kodesh, general studies, extracurricular activities and middos tovos.
Financial Board
Bais Yaakov of Waterbury is honored to have the support of its dedicated financial board. Comprised of community volunteers, none of whom yet have daughters old enough for BYW, yet driven by their dedication to chinuch habanos and to the community, they have all donated their time and financial expertise to ensure the school’s success. The board is involved in the school’s day-to-day functioning on many levels.

Mrs. Selengut is an experienced and dedicated educator with many years’ experience in high school chinuch. She has taught all high school grade levels in a range of subjects, most recently teaching both kodesh and general studies at Bais Yaakov D’Rav Meir High School in Brooklyn, NY. Mrs. Selengut has extensive adminis-trative experience directing large-scale special programs on a range of themes. Mrs. Selengut is an educational visionary, who directs the school with a keen sensitivity to both the broad direction of the institution as well as the little details that make the difference for every student who walks through its doors.
Rabbi Noy joins our staff from Meira Academy, the only Jewish high school for girls in Northern California. There he served as administrator, limudei kodesh curriculum supervisor, and teacher of halacha. Rabbi Noy learned for close to a decade in yeshivos in Eretz Yisrael, where he received semicha, and has continued to learn in the Palo Alto Kollel and currently in Yeshiva Gedola of Waterbury. Alongside his responsibilities at BYW, Rabbi Noy teaches both limudei kodesh and general studies at Yeshiva K’tana in the middle school grades. Rabbi Noy has completed a Master’s of Education degree from California State University.

Rabbi Sonnenschein, a musmach of Yeshivas Rabeinu Chaim Berlin and Pachad Yitzchok, is the Rav of the Waterbury community and a powerful speaker. He is a talmid chacham with an exceptionally clear teaching style. Hilchos Shabbos is taught chronologically, beginning with Friday afternoon and going through all pertinent halachos of Shabbos. The goal is that each girl should have a solid grasp of hilchos Shabbos and be able to bring it back to her home, now and once she gets married B’ezras Hashem. Rabbi Sonnenschein (and BYW) place a tremendous emphasis on chashivus of halachah in general.
Rabbi Chaifetz, a musmach of Yeshivas Rabeinu Chaim Berlin and one of the pioneers of the Waterbury Community, is an experienced and gifted classroom teacher with a passion for Jewish History. He is a talmid chacham who brings down the depth and breadth of his knowledge to give over a feeling of connection to klal Yisroel and a meaningful understanding of the tekufos he is teaching. Utilizing many source sheets and examining meforshim inside, the class starts with Bereishis and goes through the time of the churban Bayis Sheni.
Mrs. Fischer grew up in Pittsburgh, PA and is an active member of the Waterbury community. She has a passion for science and research, and she designs her classes to be exciting, hands-on and practical. The curriculum includes ecology, anatomy, and the study of diseases. A popular dance teacher and a dedicated librarian at the Yeshiva K’tana, Mrs. Fischer is thrilled to be focusing her talents on turning our students into expert researchers.
Mrs. Greer loves teaching and loves learning and she brings that inspiration to her classroom. She believes in and loves every single student, and the girls feel it. No ques-tion is ever too big and no question is ever too small. She has a tremendous wealth of Torah knowledge, and students can’t help but be caught up in her contagious love of Chumash. She often says how Bais Yaakov Waterbury is her dream come true – and travels 40 minutes from New Haven to share her passion and talent with us.
Mrs. Krohn is a born teacher who has taught many years in seminary in Eretz Yisrael, as well as adults and elementary school. She currently teaches 3rd grade at Yeshiva K’tana in addition to high school. She appreciates the nuances of Chazal and has a goal to reexamine topics that students have learnt when they were younger and bring them to a deeper level of understanding. Her class is as relevant as it is challenging, and her pleasant manner is always something the girls look forward to.
Miss Lipshitz is a graduate of Mesores Rochel Seminary in Eretz Yisrael and Bais Yaakov of Lakewood. Her love of teaching and learning comes through in everything she teaches. Her Navi classes are thor-oughly researched and informative, her Parsha classes are both skill oriented and inspiring. Miss Lipshitz takes a rotation teaching Peirush Hatefillah before davening each morning. Miss Lipshitz’s wholesome attitude toward being a Bais Yaakov girl and having fun makes her the perfect one to be in charge of extra-curricular activities at Bais Yaakov of Waterbury.
BYW is privileged to have such a high-caliber educational staff. Each teacher has been hand-picked for their expertise in their subject matter and their ability to make it come alive in the classroom.

Mrs. Nettleton has been a beloved history teacher for many years. Covering ancient to medieval global history, she especially enjoys sharing primary sources with the girls; she says it really gives them a feel for the time period. In a rare combination of both super-organized and super-creative, Mrs. Nettleton makes the material come alive through various projects and reports that put the girls in the shoes of people from different time periods. Throughout her subject she brings in important Jewish history that coincides with the times and places she is teaching. As the girls have the benefit of enhancing world history with insights from Rashi and Ramban, their understanding of the meforshim and the times they lived in is also enhanced in turn.
Miss Rotstein hails from Lakewood, NJ. Her charismatic personality combined with her depth of understanding make her a classroom favorite. Each one of her classes both stretch the minds of our students as well as give them something practical to take back with them. Miss Rotstein brings years of being a camp head counselor to the job as she runs the extra-curricular programming with Miss Lipshitz.
Mrs. Schuck is a talented and focused educator with a lively classroom person-ality. Teaching language arts, vocabulary and essay writing, she brings her love of literature and the written word to the class-room. Mrs. Schuck is highly sensitive to the individual needs of each girl and motivates each of her students to be successful.
Mrs. Selengut taught Chumash at Bais Yaakov Drav Meir and Bais Yaakov Oz V’hodor. This year the girls are learning Sefer Shemos with a sophisticated understanding of its totality, based on Hakdomas Haramban. With an emphasis on pshat, Rashi, Ramban and other meforshim, Mrs. Selengut’s teaching style allows hashkafah to naturally emerge from the pesukim. By the end of the year, students know many phrases from pesukim and most Rashis by heart. Students conduct an involved research report on the parshiyos about the makkos.
As a math teacher, Mrs. Selengut loves the logic of symbols and equation-solving, and intuitively knows how to bring it down to her students. This year math is covering algebra and graphing, and the girls are mastering these crucial skills through a clear and organized curriculum.
Miss Thomas is a native Israeli who speaks fluent English. With a sparkle in her eye and an approachable personality, she brings the girls to a point where they are comfortable speaking, understanding and writing in Hebrew.
Mrs. Vago joins our community from Eretz Yisrael where she lived for 5 years and headed a grant-writing team. She is very enthusiastic about her role in imparting her love and excitement for writing and creative expression. Mrs. Vago empowers her students to write what they mean and mean what they write, and most of all to love doing it.

חומש – ספר שמותThe students journey through the entire Chumash Shemos, seeing the sefer in the light of the Hakadamas Haramban l’Sefer Shemos. The sefer is learned with a sophisticated understanding of its totality, with an emphasis on pshat, Rashi, Ramban and other meforshim. The teaching style allows hashkafah to naturally emerge from the pesukim. By the end of the year, students know many phrases from pesukim and most Rashis by heart. Students conduct an involved research report on the parshiyos about the makkos and the Aseres Hadibros. The year culminates with Klal Yisroel building the mishkan and how that is directly connected to Sefer Shemos; Sefer Galus v’Geulah.
מפרשי התורה – פרשת וישבWe study Parshas Vayeshev through rigorous analysis of the mikra and the meforshim with an emphasis placed on midrash. Excellent textual skills are developed in which students learn to identify textual dilemmas in the pesukim. Students learn to read and translate a peirush, understand how the peirush is derived, compare different meforshim, and be able to organize clear presentations of the varying opinions. Beyond that, the students come away feeling an awe of the depth of the Torah hakedosha.
הלכות שבתThis goal-oriented course makes sure that each student is proficient in the halachos that she needs to understand to run her home. The halachos are taught in chronological order –starting with erev Shabbos and going through each part of Shabbos and the halachos that apply. The course is taught in a clear and organized fashion by a posek.
יהדות This class provides an in-depth analysis of the fundamentals of Yiddishkeit and hashkafah, focusing especially on inyanei d’yoma and incorporating sources from Tanach, Midrash, and Chazal.
הסטריהStarting with a focused overview of Bereishis through churban Bayis Rishon, the course’s main emphasis is on the end of Bayis Rishon through the end of Bayis Sheni. The course highlights many mekoros and meforshim.
Academics
A broad array of subjects are studied in the 9th grade. By the time our students have completed four years of high school, we envision that they will have learned most of Tanach, have clarity with regard to the mesorah of Klal Yisroel, and feel confident in their knowledge of day-to-day halachos. Additionally, our students will appreciate tefillah and be comfortable communicating in Ivris. Our secular studies curriculum aims to a produce a highly capable student with a breadth of knowledge and understanding in a range of subjects. All secular studies are enhanced by a Torah perspective on the material studied.
נביא – מלכים א' וב' This accelerated course covers the main concepts in Melachim Alef and Bais. Questions are raised, misconceptions are clarified, and the Navi is brought down to everyday life lessons. We begin with the end of Dovid haMelech’s reign, through Shlomo’s golden age, and lead into the division of Malchei Yehudah and Malchei Yisrael. The skills and knowledge gained serve as a vital basis for learning the Nevi’im Acharonim, which will be part of the curriculum in the following years.
עבריתOur goal in Ivris is to expose the students to a variety of different elements of the language: reading, writing, comprehension, poetry, grammar and more. The classes are structured to provide an engaging learning experience that is rich in content. A BYW graduate will have a solid grasp of the components of Ivris and will be confident in her ability to speak, read and understand the language on an intermediate level.
ביאורי תפילה Through this course, students gain appreciation for the vital importance of tefillah, especially for an aim b’Yisroel. We examine the deeper meaning behind the words we say every day. We start with Pesukei D’Zimra and move toward the powerful Nishmas, the mysterious Lecha Dodi and some of the beautiful perakim of Tehillim that we say in our davening.
פרקי אבות We study the depth of the mishnayos that we say every Shabbos from Pesach through Shavuos. The analysis has a very practical aim: to use our greater understanding of the text to better ourselves.
פרשת השבועBefore class each week the students prepare their own questions on the week’s parsha, looking into Chumash and Rashi. The weekly class highlights one topic in the parsha, raising several questions and solving them with thought-provoking lessons that the girls can integrate into their daily lives.
פירוש התפילה Before davening each morning we learn the basic peirush hamilim of Birchas Hashachar. The benefit of the learning is felt immediately, as the girls appreciate each day how much easier it is to concentrate on the words after studying their meaning.
בקיאותThis class explores a variety of pesukim and ma’amarei Chazal that are frequently quoted and used in day-to-day communication. The students gain insight on a range of oft-heard expressions and learn how to practically integrate them into their everyday language.

הזהרו בכבוד חברךThis class is designed by Torah u’Mesorah and the Chofetz Chaim Heritage Foundation and is taught in high school classrooms across the country. The various materials studied instill appreciation for kavod habriyus and awareness of the gravity of onaas devarim.
MATH: ALGEBRA
This year math is covering algebra and graphing, probability, and the beginnings of geometry and trigonometry. Topics include: the logic of symbols, linear functions, unknown numbers, radicals and quadratic equations, and learning how to resolve an algebraic expression. The students master these crucial skills through a clear and organized curriculum.
BIOLOGY
Students develop skills necessary for scientific inquiry and research. Topics discussed and analyzed in class include: ecology, genetics, human systems (focusing on excretory, endocrine and nervous systems), multicellular organism, homeostasis in organisms (including photosynthesis and cell respiration), reproduction and nutrition. Girls walk away feeling inspired and knowledgeable about the world Hashem created.
GLOBAL STUDIES
Covering ancient to medieval global history, the course makes liberal use of primary sources to give the students a feel for the time period. Various special projects and reports make the material come alive. Relevant Jewish history is brought in to enhance the understanding of the time period.
LANGUAGE ARTS
In this course students develop and improve their literature-based skills, as well as broaden their general knowledge through the written text. Areas of study include: literature analysis (critical thinking and reasoning of short stories, novels and plays), vocabulary (including common SAT words), grammar, expository essay writing, and book club. Some of the literary works we analyze and discuss are: short stories The Most Dangerous Game, Just Lather, That’s All, Pilot’s Choice, The Sniper, Thank You Ma’am, The Necklace, Yes Your Honesty, and Just Walk on by; full-length book Mama’s Bank Account; and the play The Miracle Worker to name just a few.
CREATIVE WRITING
In the creative writing class students learn how to properly formulate a written piece through a “process writing” program. Process writing breaks down the task of writing into its smaller component parts. By completing each step sequentially, writing becomes a less daunting task. Students see that writing doesn’t just happen; it is planned and it evolves, taking shape as it develops. The students learn how to express their thoughts in an articulate and eloquent manner. By the end of the year, they are confident in their writing skills and comfortable putting their thoughts to paper.
COMPUTER SKILLS
In the increasingly technological world we live in, being computer savvy is a must! BYW students learn many fundamental computer proficiency skills: Microsoft Office, Excel and other commonly used programs; typing, aiming for high speed and accuracy; graphic design and web design.

The bustling BYW extra-curricular program encourages the students to develop their talents and strengths in a range of areas beyond academics. Much care and planning is involved to ensure that each girl has the opportunity to shine in her unique way.
G.O.
While G.O. activities are packed with fun, fun, fun, their educational value cannot be underestimated. Through the activities the girls experience the richness of pleasure in the ruach of Yiddishkeit and as bnos Yisroel. There is a constant goal to instill in the girls a spirit of simcha and achdus, as well as pride in themselves, their school and their community. While participating in these extremely fun activities, they are developing many valuable traits: responsibility, accountability, learning to take initiative, responding to a need, dedication, creativity, and working cooperatively.
BOOK CLUB
Before every major school vacation, the girls vote on one book to read. After the break, a teacher or guest facilitates an organized discussion about the reading. Each girl prepares a creative presentation to share with the group, and all thoughts and ideas are respected. The discussion brings out understanding of various elements such as character development, plot, setting, themes and symbolism. Over Sukkos the Book Club explored Forever My Jerusalem by Puah Shteiner.

The students were greeted the morning after Sukkos with a delicious refreshing treat of smoothies! A stunning bulletin board meets our eyes as we enter the school building, introducing the daily “shir shel yom”— a special song that plays each day in school.
ORIENTATION
The inaugural class knows they are building something exciting with this school. Orientation was kicked off with a break-out of the theme “A Musical Masterpiece.” The girls created a stunning G.O. logo and participated in a hands-on workshop discussing the important role they have as the very first class of the community’s high school.

The week of Aseres Y'mei Teshuva is different from any other week in the year. In order to prepare ourselves likras Yom Hadin, we had a shavuah iyun, in which every day something special inspired us to better ourselves and do teshuva.
Monday – Every teacher began her class spending five minutes discussing a tefillah (or phrase from tefillah) of her choice from the Yom Kippur machzor. This gave our students fascinating insights on the machzor, and also demonstrated the special connection a woman forms with tefillah throughout her life. The girls experienced how all their teachers—of both kodesh and secular subjects—have so much depth and connection to Hashem. The students were encouraged to write notes on special sticky pads and place them at the appropriate places in their machzorim to keep themselves focused and inspired during their own davening.
Tuesday – Yom Iyum: "המלכת את חברך ?"
BYW hosted the 7th and 8th grades for a pre-Yom Kippur Yom Iyun on the topic of The ."המלכת את חברך ?"packed program included staff performances portraying sensitive social scenarios, a hands-on workshop addressing real-life situations how we treat others at home and at school, working together to create a quilt inspired by the day’s lessons, and a design-an-ice-cream-sundae party with an assortment of toppings based on their friends’ good qualities!
Wednesday – Guest lecturer Mrs. Sussie Brecher shared with us insights on the simcha of serving Hashem. She emphasized the importance of recognizing the presence of Hashem and hashgacha in our lives. Mrs. Brecher, who travelled from Monsey, NY, brought every student a small notebook and asked them to write down 5 things that they are grateful to Hashem for—it was a truly inspiring exercise!
Thursday – We had a mini-presentation reading a letter that someone wrote to year 5773 and how they wish they would have taken advantage of these special days to do teshuva and daven. We then watched a fascinating video produced in Eretz Yisrael of astronauts preparing for their mission. Once they got up to space, instead of doing the experiments that they were supposed to do, they got distracted and began using the chemicals to make their space suits shiny and playing games. When they were called down from their mission early, the message for the viewers was clear. A workshop followed the screening, and we brought out themes of how to use our gifts appropriately, how to hear messages before suffering consequences, how to keep ourselves focused on our “mission” without getting side-tracked.

“Plant a chesSEED and watch it grow”—The BYW girls are spearheading a chessed program, involving their own class as well as the 8th grade of Yeshiva K’tana. The program was launched with decorating flower cookies in the spirit of the message that the impact of chessed continues to reach far beyond the initial act. We listened to a phenomenal panel of three active women in the community who shared their chessed experiences with us—what motivates them to do chessed and how performing chessed has affected their lives. We all enjoyed a festive brunch in honor of the occasion!
The goals of the program are to inspire the students to become givers; to teach the subtleties of when and how to do chessed; and to provide a taste of the tremendous satisfaction that is derived from giving to others.

Rabbi Nate Segal from Torah U’mesorah honored us with a visit to our school. He portrayed to us that the Torah is beautiful and how it is meant to be shared with every Jew, even if they are not “your type.” He also shared with us some of the history of the rejuvenation of the Waterbury community. It was fascinating to hear all the work he personally put in behind the scenes, and how his vision became a reality. We feel privileged to have hosted him, and are inspired by his talk!
BYW was honored by a visit of board members of the Jewish Federation of Western Connecticut. It was a wonderful opportunity for us to say thank you for being instrumental in securing grants to open our school. And it was a wonderful opportunity for the board members to see all that has happened since their generous contribution—a vibrant, beautiful high school up and running!
