I came back to Grand Junction in 2003 because my dad wanted me to

help him with day to day living. We graduated in May and in June I

was in Denver for about 9 years and worked at the First National

Bank of Denver and then Intrust.

I got married and moved to Delta and we became owners of

Moonshine Liquors for several years. I ended up back in Denver and

then moved to Durango until I came back here and started working.

Now I am happily retired and enjoy spending time with my Grand

dog Ce-Ce and going for walks with her. Also coming back home I get

to be around family again.

I drove to Alaska in 1973 and lived there until 2009 when we moved

to Pagosa Springs. In Alaska I lived in Juneau for two years, a Native

village for ten years, and Denali Park for 24 years. After we moved to

Pagosa Springs I have been returning to remote Alaskan villages

along the Yukon River in western Alaska. These villages are very

remote – no tourist would ever go out there. I bring a sleeping bag

and sleep on the floors of the schools. There is no lodging available

or restaurants. I go to the villages for 4-6 weeks usually 3-4 times a

year and provide professional development for teachers for K-12

teaching of literacy and I mentor/coach PreK teachers and help them

set up classrooms, pre and post-test students, provide parent

conferences, pre and post-test students, and lead monthly activities

for PreK children and their families. I love the remoteness of the

villages and the Native culture. Elders are respected for their

knowledge and wisdom which are passed from generation to

generation. Part of each day for me revolves around getting safe

drinking water. In some villages a gallon of water costs $8 while in

other villages a gallon of water costs $14. Travel from village to

village is by small plane as there are no roads. The schools send a

snow machine or an ATV to the airstrip to pick me up when I arrive or

depart at each village. There are no vehicles in most of these villages.

Travel is by snow machine or ATV. I walk everywhere that I want to

go.

Education: CSU, Bachelor of Science Speech and Hearing Science.

University of Northern Colorado: two Masters’ Degrees – Speech and

Hearing Science and Education Learning Disabilities. University of

Anchorage: Master’s degree in Educational Leadership and

Administration.

I taught in small K-12 schools in Alaska where you teach what you are

assigned from year to year. Part of the lure of K-12 schools is that

your teaching assignment constantly changes based on the needs of

the students. Over the years I taught: Speech and Language

Resource, Learning Disabilities Resource, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th grades,

middle school, high school, and eventually was one of the two district

administrators so my responsibilities were district curriculum,

professional development/in service for teachers, Federal Programs,

state and independent grants, and I taught college credit courses for

the staff. After retiring to Colorado, I have been returning to

extremely remote Alaskan villages as an education consultant.

Many opportunities to experience and live in wilderness settings

have been part of my life. Our sons were born in a Native village.

When Dylan was 6 months old I lived for three months in an old

trapper’s cabin on the Aguluwak River. With Dylan in a backpack, I

could run the river and navigate twenty miles down Lake Aleknagik to

get to where a vehicle was parked. My husband, Brian, is an

experienced wilderness adventurer so we have spent weeks ocean

kayaking in remote places, floating rivers in pack rafts, hiking,

backpacking, living in tents. It’s been a life with grand adventures

and at this stage of life – very special and wonderful memories.

Music and dancing are part of my retired life – country line dancing –

it’s not what you think! Country line dancing has evolved into quite

complicated dances with a younger generation of dancers catching

the fever! I have had great fun celebrating milestone birthdays – at

50 I went on a bike ride in Tasmania, at 60 I went on a bike ride in

New Zealand, and 70 is coming up way too soon! Contact me if you

are interested in planning an adventure for our 70th birthdays!

We have 3 children Dylan 41, Jesse 39, Brittany 29 and many other

kids lived with us during their high school years. One of those kids,

Greg, lived with us for two years and became part of our family.

The joy of retiring in Colorado has been to be part of the lives of our

grandchildren. We usually babysat the kids two days a week prior to

them starting kindergarten which has given us the opportunity to be

part of their lives. We have 3 grandchildren in Pagosa Springs:

BaiLee, Blake and Cooper and one grandchild in Fort Collins: Maddox

Bruin. When BaiLee was nine years old she flew by herself to Alaska

and we took her ocean kayaking and camping for ten days. She was

amazing even at nine years old! The next summer she flew to Alaska

and I took her on a small plane to a remote Dall sheep hunting camp

in the Wrangell Mountains where we rode horses every day to spike

hunting camps. BaiLee call me “Grandma Trouble” based on the

many adventures we have had together! She also says, “What

happens with Grandma, stays with Grandma!”

The grandchildren are athletes, excellent academic students, kind

and thoughtful human beings. They love outdoor activities and are

technology wizards! The grandchildren gave my husband a Play

Station 4 and the game Fortnight for his 71st birthday. Now – the

grandkids and Brian can play Fortnight on a team together no matter

where each of them happens to be. Do you know about Fortnight?

If you want to be a “cool” grandparent – you need to know how to

play Fortnight. It will surprise and delight your grandkids!

Life is good! We are thankful for good health and a family with

young parents who coach sports and are very involved in their

children’s lives. Our life revolves around the activities of the

grandkids!

I came back home to Grand Junction in 1982. When I say, “back

home”, I literally mean back to the home my parents bought after I

graduated from high school. I went to CSU and lived in Ft. Collins

from 1970-1975. I then moved to Glenwood Springs until moving

back home in 1982. I attended Mesa College and CSU.

I did not serve in the military but I sure respect those who did

especially at the time we graduated!

I was the Executive Director of the Effective Parents Project Inc.,

which was a non-profit organization established to provide support,

resource information and educational opportunities

(seminars/conferences) to parents of the children with disabilities

and the professionals who served these children. I was led to this

career with the birth of my first daughter Angela who has multiple

severe challenges. I feel truly blessed by being her mother and for

guiding me to such a rewarding profession.

My hobbies include cooking, baking, knitting and needlework. I had

to give up golf after receiving a multitude of screws and rods in my

back.

We have 5 children. When we married, almost 28 years ago, he

brought 3 wonderful boys to our family: Chris was 19, David, 16 and

Michael was 13. I had Angela age 13 and Tony who was 9 when we

married.

We have 6 grandchildren. Chris and his wife Carol who live in

Centennial, Co. are parents of Mackenzie 16 and Taylor 13. David

and his wife Tonja live in Broomfield and have 2 boys; Will who is 11

and Ollie who is 8. Tony has a beautiful daughter Paisley who lives in

Queen Creek, AZ., with her mother. After living in Az. For 10 years

Tony moved back to GJ 3 years ago and will marry a wonderful

woman named Falisha. They have a precious new baby boy who the

first grandchild we have had the pleasure to have close enough to

really be a part of his life. They all do many things that make us

proud. I am proud of the way they live their lives – based on the

value of always family first.

They bring me joy, they make me laugh and they are always here

when we need them, and we love to play with them.
