And the answer to the question is, “that was a calendar at flank speed!” It’s hard to believe that it has been nearly 3 months since our last meeting. I hope you’ve had a good summer so far.

We’ve had successful cruises to Pleasant Harbor, Reid Harbor and Port Ludlow. As I write this, Cruise Captains are finalizing the planning for the Sequim Bay Cruise and I understand that 50 people have signed up so far. I’m sure it will be equally successful. As the old saying goes, “it ain’t over yet!” We still have the Blake Island Cruise in September, the Port Hadlock Bonfire Cruise in October and the Bell Harbor Holiday Cruise in December.

Our Communications Standing Committee has several subcommittees, including “Fair Winds”. This is the subcommittee that sends cards, such as get well, condolence, etc. to members on behalf of the membership. Sandy Curtis has been active on Fair Winds for 15 years and has decided to stand down. Let’s thank Sandy for her long and dedicated service. On a regulatory note, the State of Washington has petitioned the EPA to designate all of Puget Sound as a no discharge zone. Once so designated, no vessel will be permitted to discharge treated effluent from type I and type II marine sanitation devices. The petition was submitted during the 3

rd week of July. The EPA

has 90 days to respond which means that we can expect an answer by the 3

    rd week of October. Our

thanks to Dale Moses for keeping an eye on this.

It’s almost PTYC election time again. During the September meeting we’ll be calling on members to form a Nominating Committee to determine candidates for the 2017 Board positions. Remember that elections are held in November.

Finally, let’s remember our shipmate Bob Petrie, who crossed the bar on August 1

    st. Bob was a

PTYC member for 17 years during which he and Betty cruised Puget Sound and Canadian waters aboard their boat, Noel. A well-attended celebration of his life was held on the 20

    th,

during which many stories were told. Harry Dudley gave a touching reading of Alfred, Lord Tennyson’s poem, “Crossing the Bar”, including the ringing of the ship’s bell to signal the end of Bob’s watch.

    2016 SCHOLARSHIPS AWARDED

    BY PORT TOWNSEND YACHT CLUB

The Port Townsend Yacht Club has awarded $1500 scholarships to Lennard Noller and Laura Stefaniak, both students at the NW School of Wooden Boatbuilding.

Noller’s passion is finding solutions to environmental concerns that affect our oceans and his commitment is to addressing these topics within the maritime industry through education, alternative propulsion/energy and through the use of sustainable materials. Leading up to his present educational goals, he has been involved in the operation and restoration of the schooner Adventuress, the schooner Seaward and the soon-to-launched green sistership, the Matthew Turner in San Francisco.

Stefaniak came to the school without previous knowledge about the maritime or nautical life but was driven to increase her life experiences centered around all things having to do with boats. Specifically her aim is to become an able bodied mariner and boatbuilder. After school her aim is to stay in the area and pursue a career with boats. She also lists as a favorite subject, sailmaking.

The PTYC annual garage sale fundraiser and funds donated annually by Port Townsend Yacht Club members are awarded to students to encourage and assist them in pursuing an education in a maritime field of study. Students must be residents of Jefferson County but may be pursuing a marine related education here or outside of our county and show need for financial support.

In 1990, members of the Port Townsend Yacht Club created a Scholarship Fund to promote marine related studies for students in our local maritime community. Since its beginning distribution in 1991, the Port Townsend Yacht Club has awarded local marine related studies scholarships in an amount over $43,000.

Thank you PTYC members for your generous support of the Scholarship Fund.

    The 2016 Scholarship Committee

A most surprising discovery was an unplanned stay at Ladysmith Community Marina on Vancouver Island (a short hop from Telegraph Harbor in the Gulf Islands). What a nice, clean and friendly marina with excellent facilities for social gatherings and tourism (including the well provisioned and historical town of Ladysmith).

It would make a great future PTYC cruise destination! Michael & Jane A

PTYC Garage Sale Proceeds Fund Marine Trade Related Scholarships

Hope you are enjoying this summer! The Garage Sale plans are heating up like the August weather! By the time you read this, we will have had 2 work parties of loading donations into the attic. It's been GREAT! And a special thanks to all for such generous donations. REMINDER: You can conveniently bring donations to the clubhouse 30 minutes prior to both our September 13th and October 11th monthly meetings!!!

We will probably need as many volunteers as before, to ensure a successful event. So please keep the following dates and shifts in mind and sign up on line or contact me: [email protected]

Thursday, October 6, 10:00 -11:30am is the Garage Sale Planning Meeting which all volunteers are encouraged to attend.

    The Preparation Sessions are: Wednesday & Thursday. Oct. 12-13, 1:00-4:00 pm Friday, Oct.14, 9:00am - 1:00pm

And our Fundraiser Event with clean-up following, is:

    Saturday, Oct.15, 9:00am-2:00pm with clean-up from 2:00-4:00pm

Looking forward to the fun of working with everyone to help raise money for the Scholarship Fund!

Sincerely, Muriel Powers, Garage Sale Coordinator

NOTE: During the set-up work sessions, PTYC volunteers can purchase donated items once they have been priced. Volunteer—and don’t miss this advantageous opportunity !!

On the northwest coast of North Broughton Island (on our way to Sullivan Bay) we encountered a very large pod (100+) of Pacific White-sided Dolphin, some of which rode with us in our bow wake and alongside Tyee. We again encountered another pod in Tribune Channel on our way to Kwatsi Bay.

We learned that Chatham Channel at low tide was the perfect place to observe bears working the beach. Here we saw a mother grizzly with two of her cubs (probably last year’s offspring) working the beach, turning over the rocks to feed.
