Now in its 100th year, Badin has long remained true to its roots. The town’s centennialseal notes its primary identity markers; Aluminum Town on one side commemoratesthe origin of its current form as a town born of the aluminum industry and NaturalTreasure on the other for the innate and incomparable beauty of the Yadkin Pee DeeRiver basin at the foot of the ancient Uwharrie mountain range. The seal is centrallyadorned with the logo of a Hardaway Side Notch spear point inset with a fleur-de-lisabove the slogan, Our History Runs Deep.

The fleur-de-lis calls back to the town’s French forebears and designers who first soughtto generate hydroelectric energy from the Yadkin River and built the unique townhousesin the French-Colonial style common to parts of Europe. The upturned Hardaway spearpoint heralds the Paleo-Indian grounds of modern day Badin which served nomadicnative hunters and gatherers as an annual respite and congregational setting.

Despite changes in the methods and purposes, manyfacets of ancient Carolina culture in and around Badinwere based on the same natural amenities enjoyed byresidents and visitors today. Where shad hunting byatlatl and spear point was rich on the beautiful banks ofthe area above a natural falls, contemporary anglersenjoy hauling in droves of bass, catfish and pan fish. Thefalls may be quieted, but the serene beauty and diversenatural habitat remains and the bounty of Badin Lakeonly adds to the splendor.

Wind surfers, paddle boarders and kayakers findexpansive niches to fill along the lake and FallsReservoir, while pontoon boats, party barges, flat-bottom fishers and motor boats make wake all across thevast surface of the Badin Lake, the deepest of all the areareservoirs.

With a pleasantly mild piedmont climate, Badin enjoysfour distinct seasons throughout the year each with itsown special offerings for residents and growing families.Badin Elementary School is a model of the communityschool philosophy. Students have close ties with friendsand teachers who live in town and many are able to walkhome after school.

Children making merry during the spring and summermonths may be heard across lawns and the occasionalneighbor-cat or dog may meander by, clearly sharing inthe air of communal bliss that seldom, if ever, blows farfrom Badin.

Few elements of the experience of living in Badin arerivaled by the simple joy of tight-knit neighborhoods andthe charm of the garden-city design. Lawns aremanageable sizes and benefit greatly from the TLC ofhands-on gardening.

A hand wave from a neighbor behind a stroller or abrimmed-hat head nod from atop a mower arecommonly exchanged while other pleasantries may takeon a more extended air. Whether by way of a coffeeclutch at the end of a lawn fence or an impromptumeeting at the Badin Café or Vann Memorial Gazebo, conversations are easy to find.
