Fast Track Headlines:

The Standards and Competency Framework for Nurses in Aesthetics has been submitted to the RCN for

accreditation.

Andrew Rankin and Marea Brennan Thorns have written to MHRA drawing their attention to the concerns of

prescribing nurses and questioning current legislation around stock medicines.

Conferences: BACN 4th and 5th October in Manchester, Association of Nurse prescribers 14th November,

Clinical Cosmetic and Reconstruction Expo in London 11-12th October

BACN appoints Education Committee and calls for volunteers to join Standards and Governance Committee

and Public Education Committee.

BACN publishes its report to Keogh and considers next steps in anticipation of Government Response.

Another month, another bunch of news! The pace never lets up! Every month I wonder what on earth I will have to write about in 4 weeks’ time! Here goes…… The Standards and Competency Framework for Nurses in Aesthetic Medicine has been an enormous task, ambitious but very timely, and we know it will be an essential reference for any developments in education post Keogh. The final document has been approved and submitted for accreditation by The RCN. Can’t wait for publication! A big thank you to Michelle Irving and Suzanne Armstrong for leading and driving on this, and to Adrian Baker, Sharon Dobbs, Liz Bardolph, Sharon Bennett, Lou Sommereux, Constance Campion Awaad and me who slaved away and followed orders and met deadlines imposed by our task masters. I have to say it was like doing the V300 all over again (double for Suzanne, who was studying for hers at the time and poor Sharon Dobbs who was juggling a masters!) Amazing team work!

Prescribing From Stock

An increasing number of members have completed or are in the process or are applying to become Nurse Independent Prescribers. There has been lots of support given and received amongst members, no more apparent than on our Facebook group. Those not on Facebook must remember they can turn to their regional groups or indeed to the BACN office, for support, help and advice. This does not include applying and doing the course for you! Those who are nurse prescribers will recognise there remain challenges and obstacles to providing the kind of service we would wish to because we cannot, as nurses, order or hold stock drugs. Helena Collier wrote an excellent editorial in Journal of Aesthetic Nursing (www.aestheticnursing.co.uk) which generated a healthy debate on Facebook which further informed our approach. Andrew Rankin, as lead of the Prescribing Group with Marea Brennan Thorns who sits on the Association of Nurse

Prescribers Committee, have been charged with exploring the issues and concerns, reviewing the legislation and

constructing a formal approach, with The ANP on board and with advice from Matt Griffiths, to The MHRA copying in

the NMC and RCN. It has not been rushed because we wanted to get it right. We may not achieve a change in the

legislation, but we will have drawn the issues to their attention, for serious consideration. It is an excellent letter

which Andrew will write about for member’s information.

Growing Up Fast

As you all will be aware the work and scope of the BACN has grown and evolved at a rapid pace: 600 members, prescribing, Europe, Keogh with a focus on standards, education, accreditation and regulation. We know we have experts and a wealth of skills and experience amongst membership and we really want to make use of those skills and expertise. We want to rally those willing to take on a challenge and commit to contributing in a bigger way. The government will be publishing their response to Keogh. With this in mind we need to step up a gear and the board have been going at full throttle, we need more hands on deck. To this end, we have appointed our first subcommittee. BACN Committee on Education Andrew Rankin, Suzanne Armstrong, Constance Campion Awaad, Deborah Forsythe, Miranda Phillips and Claire Grainger. Standards in education and training was a key point made by Keogh, we must line up and be prepared. The committee have been asked to begin by drafting a position statement with a clear vision for an educational framework for nurses in aesthetics, reflecting on the following questions: ● At what level? degree, NVQ, BTEC or other? ● Where? University, private colleges, clinics? ● Who should teach - Educators, clinicians? What qualifications should we expect of teachers and trainers?

Should they require accreditation? Who would do this? ● Should theory and practical be taught together or separately? ● How might courses be accredited? ● Should there be a grandfather clause, and if so, how would this work? ● Should nurse education be independent of others? could we become an awarding body or must we all line

up under the same awarding body? ● Should we consider making a case to be an awarding body subject to the same standards as others as

dictated by health education England? No simple task, so a big thank you for those who agreed to take it on. When I have received all the photos and biographies we will post on the website as soon as possible and publish minutes.

A word from Eric Clemons on Why Advertising Is Failing On The Internet

“...my basic premise rejects this, suggesting that simple commercial messages, pushed through whatever medium, in

order to reach a potential customer who is in the middle of doing something else, will fail. It’s not that we no longer

need information to initiate or to complete a transaction; rather, we will no longer need advertising to obtain that

information. We will see the information we want, when we want it, from sources that we trust more than paid

advertising.” -

What is the Solution? The answer is very simple - YOUR EXISTING CLIENTS!

Rule Number One in Building Profit for Your Business is:

Communicate With Your Existing Clients More Frequently

Rule Number Two in Building Profit for your Business is:

A customer who has purchased from you in the past is 25 times more likely to purchase from you again than a brand new customer. In other words, an existing client is 25 times more likely to buy from you than a stranger.

You will have heard me say this before. I will keep saying it until I see every clinic stop paying to obtain new customers before selling more to your existing customers. Tip: Save £750 of the money you were going to spend on advertising. Instead, use some of this money to pay someone to update your Database.

Page 8: Bacn Newsletter 7 July 2013

Case Study: Recently, a client of mine in the midlands purchased

several adverts for a non-surgical, skin tightening machine. She was

placed under some pressure by friends and colleagues who said that

this was a priority.. Understandably, they thought that she needed

new customers for the machine. I encouraged her to run an email

campaign strategy that had a strong track record in producing profit

for clinics and for other industries. The email campaign was to be

directed to her existing customer database.

This database had 850 contacts within it and 650 email addresses.

We divided the list into ‘probable’s’ (50) and ‘possibles’ (600) and

sent a series of three emails out each list. The emails we sent to the

possibles was different to that we sent to the probable’s.

The results were:

Question - “My database is not in good condition, what do I do?”

Here are some facts and figures about clinic databases from my own research.

The average size of a clinic database is 550 contacts.

● Those databases with as little as 175 clients were able to make profit by communicating more frequently

with them.

● Clinics with databases of 550 had 100 email addresses that did not work (some far more).

● Up to 40% of their client database had no email address.

● Clinics spent between £750 and £2,500 on advertising that produced no profit.

● Clinics that spent £750 on communicating and fixing their database produced an average of £13,000 in profit

with top scores of £25,000 plus - from just one series of emails.

Important - CEN Standard. For the past three years a new pan European services standard for the aesthetics sector has been in development. This work has been coordinated at the European level by CEN, the European Committee for Standardisation. Member states, including the UK, have been making considerable input into this work, and BACN Vice Chair Sharon Bennett has been part of the UK committee and development team. It had been hoped to publish the standard (as EN 16372) by Quarter 2 / Quarter 3 2014. The current working title for the EN 16372 standard, reflecting its wide scope, is: `"Aesthetic surgery and aesthetic non-surgical medical services`". However last week CEN have informed us that, for procedural reasons that had been highlighted by some member states, the decision has now been made to probably split EN 16372 into two separate standards. One will deal solely with `aesthetic surgery services`, and the other with `aesthetic non-surgical medical services`. It is anticipated that the content of the two separate standards will be similar to the recent public consultation draft - but simply split into two documents. This should not entail any changes to the content. The absolute decision and confirmation for this will not be made until October 2013 , when the CEN technical board meet to discuss, but once confirmed the target publication dates for the two standards are by Quarter 2 ( surgical) and Quarter4 ( non surgical ) 2014 respectively. The next plenary meeting to run through the recent public consultation comments will be in August and the delegation team from the UK will be Mr Nigel Mercer ( Plastic Surgeon ) , Sally Taber ( IHAS) and BACN Sharon Bennett. BACN have always felt that the document should be separated into surgical and non surgical standards for clarity. At this time we have no further answers to any questions you may have on the standard until after Sharon has attended the plenary meeting in August (cutting short her summer holiday!). At that point she will be able to explain the agreed pathway CEN will be taking to address the probable separation.

Sharon Bennett Committee on Standards and Governance We would like to call for volunteers to form a committee on standards and governance, to review our Code and Constitution when necessary, to investigate complaints and report on their resolution and to design internal accountability, regulations and procedures to ensure and protect the transparency and integrity of The Association. Please submit your biographies for selection, we wish to appoint 6 members. Committee on Public Information and Education We recognise we need to engage more with the public. Further, we have suggested in our report to Keogh that there is a need for an unbiased and independent source of information on treatments for the public and also suggested a ‘Patients Charter’ to ensure consumers are aware of their rights, the standards of care they should expect and how to complain and who to. This committee would draft a Charter and develop a public information resource. A very important and useful piece of work, you will all agree. Volunteers, please submit your biographies for selection, again, we are looking for 6 members.

Keogh We have published our report, submitted to Keogh in October 2012, in full, on the website. View or download our Report to the Government Expert Review Here Keogh published its report in April 2013. View the Review of the Regulation of Cosmetic Interventions by clicking here We are now focusing on preparing for the government response. Constance Campion is being extremely generous with her time and expertise on this particular project and on behalf of us all, I wish to take this opportunity to thank her. We will draft and publish a summary of our expectations and proposals and call upon membership to engage should lobbying be necessary. Look out for Newsflashes on this subject. Last but not least I would like to acknowledge the work of Kay Greveson and her group for getting their heads down and producing the first BACN procedure template for Botulinum toxin (Click here to read Protocol for the use of Botulinum toxin A for cosmetic procedures by nurse practitioners) and for Helen Blanchard for writing an excellent letter to Barts on behalf of The BACN, to draw their attention to the fact that nurses should be eligible to undertake their post graduate course and why. We have received a positive response (result!) and anticipate nurses undertaking this course alongside doctors and dentists. Well done Helen! Finally, it’s that time again. I am reviewing the 2012 Membership Survey and will be sending out the 2013 Survey for your participation any time now. This survey was enormously valuable last year and the majority of members completed it, which added to its credibility. It is part of our Keogh report if you have not already seen it; a comparison of the two will be very interesting. Please do take the time to complete it. The statistics furnish us with an evidence base which we need more than ever and also help us determine the priorities for the year ahead. Some time ago, we sent out a survey on insurance. To date, only 15 have completed it. It takes a minute. Please

follow the link and complete it; again, it arms us with stats to lobby for better, competitive and bespoke insurance.
