TheProject
I. AimsTheThreeyearCommunityLeadershipProject(CLP3yr)wasdevelopedthroughtheneedtoaddressthelackofBlackandMinorityEthnic(BME)groupsengagingandbenefitingfromnature.Theprojectaimstodevelopleaderstothebestoftheirabilityintheenvironmentalarena.Bytheendoftheproject,0articipantsgainedtheskills,qualificationsandexperiencetodeliverenvironmentalprojectsandtoleadthefutureofBackboneasanorganisation.TheCLP3yrusedoursustainableexperientiallearningmodelwhereparticipantsgavebacktheirknowledgetotheircommunitieswhilstgainingleadershipconfidence,transferablelifeskills,formalqualificationsandexperience.Participantsweregiventheopportunityto:Ø GainskillstoleadcommunitiesinthegreatoutdoorsØ Undertakealeadershipandpersonaldevelopmentjourneyofalifetime–incorporatingtransferablelifeskillsØ GainNationalGoverningBodyAwardsandQualificationsØ UndertaketrainingandawardsinenvironmentaleducationasofferedbyourenvironmentalpartnersØ GainskillsandexperienceinorganisationalleadershipthroughtheopportunitytobeaBackboneBoardMemberØ VolunteeringandemploymentopportunitieswithourpartnersthroughworkingoneventsandcommunityengagementinitiativesTheprojectspannedover3yearsandinvolvedresidentialmodules,participantledcommunityengagementinitiativesandcommunitybasedmentoring.

FromScotland’sPeopleandNatureSurvey2013/1489%ofadultsinScotlandwereawareofoneorbothofScotland’sNationalParks49%ofadultsinScotlandstatedtheyhadvisitedoneofbothScotland’sNationalParksintheprevious12monthsThesefindingsarebasedonasampleof1,000adultssothesub-sampleofBMErespondentsistoosmalltoanalyzeseparately.FromScottishNatureOmnibus201667%ofadultsinScotlandhadheardofNationalNatureReserves17%ofadultsinScotlandstatedthattheyhadvisitedanNNRintheprevious12monthsThesefindingsarebasedonasampleof1,000adultsplusaboostersampleof100BMErespondents.ThismeanswecananalyzethesampleofBMErespondentsseparatelyalthoughitisstillrelativelysmall(149respondents):29%ofBMErespondentshadheardofNNRsand7%statedtheyhadvisitedanNNRinthelast12months.

Initiativesdeliveredbyourparticipants,particularlytheOutdoorFestivalforAllshowcommunitymembersarewellbelowaverageintermsofawarenessandengagementwithScotland’sNationalParks.

available.Thisgaveparticipantstheskillsandcompetencestooffercommunitygroupssafeoutdoorexperiencesthatwerecompliantwithnationalregulations.Furthermore,itgaveparticipantsthequalificationstoskillupanddeliverqualificationstotheirowncommunitymembers,staffandvolunteersbuildingthesustainablecapacityoforganisations.
§ Participantsraised£766,565ofwhich£83,565wasforspecificprojectsandeventsand£683,000forstaffingpoststodeliverenvironmentalrelatedactivities.Staffing

§ Monitoringandcollatingdemographicsofcommunityprojects.Participantswerereluctanttosubmitandcompleteadministrationaspectsofprojects.Wetrieda
numberofmethodswithparticipantinputthatdidnotwork.Whereinformationwasnotavailableonthemonitoringformswecollectedinformationthroughour1:1’sverballywhichwastimeconsuming.Wewillcontinuetodevelopthisaspectoftheproject.
§ ParticipantshadlimitedawarenessandknowledgeofNationalNatureReserves(NNR’s).Thiswasaddressedbyaskingparticipantstoresearchareaspriortovisits.
However,thereisstillaheavyrelianceonrangersandsupportstafftoprovidedetailedinformation.InthefuturewewilldeveloparobustplanforparticipantstolearnaboutNNR’s.
§ Deliveryofmodulesoverthewintermonths.Thiswasaddressedbylocalisingdeliveryandwhennecessaryre-locating.

ParticipantInformation20attendedtheselectionevent,with16recruited.Wehadchallengeswithregardstoretentionofparticipantsintothe2nd/3rdyearduetosituationsbeyondourcontrolwhereparticipant’scircumstanceshadchangedanddidnotallowforthecommitmentrequired.Wehad6participantsleaveduetoissuesofillnesses,jobchangesandinabilitytocommit.Asaresultwechangedtheformatandintroducedamoreflexibleapproachtoparticipationontheprogrammeandhowwedelivercommunityengagementinitiatives.2017weintroducedjointworkingopportunitiestoourwiderleadershipalumnitotakeadvantageoftheopportunitiesofferedonthe3yrCLPandtoofferfurtherjointworkingopportunitiesregardingdevelopmentanddeliveryofcommunityprojects.Wecreated2levelsofparticipationallowingparticipantstochooseaccordingtotheiravailability:

It'sbeenreallygreatworkingwithBackboneontheresidentialandthewomen'sevent.Onewomansaidtometodaythatshereallylikedthiseventandshepreferredgoingwithusratherthanherfamilybecausewehadpeoplewhoknewwheretogoandwhattolookat.ButshedidalsosaythatnowshewouldbemoreconfidenttocomeonatripherselfwithherfamilytoexploretheAberfoylearea.Thisexperiencehaschangedmylifeandmyperspective.I’velivedinGlasgowallmylife(40+yrs)andneverbeennorthofPerthanddidn’tknowthis(Glenfeshie)existed.Thekidshavenotmissedtheirtechnology/wifi,theylovedbeingoutdoorsandlearningaboutnature.I’velovedbeingaway;it’sbeenveryspiritual.Inowknowwedon’tincorporatenatureintooureverydaylivesandweshould!Mycommunitymembersandorganisationarenowlivingamoresustainablelifestyle,agreatexampleoftherippleeffect.JMAConservationelementhasgivenusallasenseofmakingadifferenceinourlocalareaandcommunity.Lovehowthisfocusesonthecommunity,takingthecommunityawayfromtheinwarddirectionofbeing(socialmedia,tv,gameconsolesetc)tooutwardlookingandbeinginnatureMyworkwiththewomen’ssocialgroup.Thewomenhavetodealwithinternalbarriersaswellasthenormalculturalexternalbarriers.Forexampletheexternalbarrier-Athometheyhavetheirhusbands/menfolktellingthemtheycan’tdothis(biking,walking),asitwilllookbadonthecommunityandthefamily.Forexampletheinternalbarrier-theycan’tdoitbecausefamilymembersthinktheyarenotcapableofdoingit!Yetonthisprojecttheydo,theyarebrilliantrolemodelsandgetthroughitbycourage.ForexampleaTurkishwomanbeingtoldbyherhusbandshecannotgetinvolvedasitwill“disgracehim,thefamilyandthecommunity”–yetshecarrieson.AfamilyweddinginDundeechoseawoodlandtheme.thisiswhatBackbonehastaughtus–topassiton!

safetodoso.Iamorganisedenoughandconfidenttodothis.Self-autonomyandgrowth–Iasaleaderandrolemodelamself-reliantandindependent.Imakethingshappen,Itakeownership.I’vebeenoutofmycomfortzoneandpassthatexperiencetoothers.IworkwithyoungAsianboyswhohavehadeverythingdoneforthem.Ifacilitatetheirdrivetogetawayonexpedition,theyhavetotakecareofthemselves,putupthetent,cook,cleanupetc.Iamchangingthecycleandmakingthemmoreself-reliant.ThisisverypowerfulintheAsiancommunity.Therippleeffect.Inowhavethetraining,qualifications,skillsandexperience.Wearenowpassingthisonbytrainingandskillingupourvolunteerstoleadtheirowncommunities:Polish,Chinese,Indian,Africanetc..Theyunderstandtheircommunitiesbetterthanwedo.Ihavemotivatedmyfriendsandfamilyandcommunitynottolazearoundanddonothing,butintroducedthemtoanotherworld,oncetheyexperiencethattheywantmore!Ihavetheknowledgeanddesiretopreservetheenvironmentonadifferentlevel.Wenowrecycle,eathealthyandlocal.Thisispassedontocommunitygroups(littermanagement,snackingetc)Ihaveknowledgeofoutdoorgames/activitiesandtheabilitytopitchitattherightlevel,fortherightagegroup,culturaladaptationsetcThisprojecthasgivenmesomanyopportunitiesasaperson,leaderandmemberofmycommunity.Ihaveusedeverythingandsetupsomanyexperiencesfromevents,residentialsandlong-termbiking,walkingandexplorationprojectswithAl-Meezan.Thewomenandchildrenjustkeepwantingmore!
ItwasgreattomeetyouallandtogettoknowyourstoriesandlearnabouttheWeekendClub,Ithinkthingslikethisshouldbemoreavailableforpeoplefromrefugeebackgrounds,asJaansaidearlier,theydon'thavethemeanstodothingslikethis.Theycanreallybenefitfromit.LotsofthegroupsIworkwithinthementalhealthfoundationsaytheywouldliketobeoutinnature,soifthiscouldbeorganisedformorepeoplethatwouldbegreat,Ithinkit'samazing.Thanksagain.Thefeedbackfromthetripwasfantastic.Participantssaid,“Igotthechancetomeetnewpeopleanditwasfun!”and“Awonderfultripforallofus.Ilovedthewalkandenjoyedthewaterfall.”Aswithpreviouseventswefoundthatthewomenseemedtoappreciateitbeingawomenonlyeventandthedynamicwasrelaxedandjoyful.Thistimethewomenalsoenjoyedhavingchildrenpresentastheywerefullyengagedandclearlyhadagreattime.Onechildsaiditwas“thebesttripever!”andanothersaid,“Ithinkthetripwasamazing!”Theythoroughlyenjoyed“exploring”andthefeelingoffreedombeinginthecountryside.Theylovedthewalktothewaterfallinspiteofheavyrain,identifyingtreesandbirdswiththeparkrangersandswingingonthehammocksalongthepath.WorkinginpartnershipwithBackbonevolunteers(CLPParticipants)wasextremelyvaluableforus.TheybroughtexpertiseIdon’thaveinleadingoutdoortripsaswellasextrasupport–wewouldnothaveattemptedtodeliveraneventofthiskindwithoutthishelp.Thevolunteersalsoprovidedawealthofideasandenthusiasmaswellaspracticalsupport.TheircommunicationwasverygoodandIparticularlyappreciatedthatoneofthevolunteersvisitedthesiteinadvanceanddidthewalkandariskassessmentsothatweknewwhattoexpect.

ConclusionTheCommunityLeadershipprojectwashighlysuccessfulwithoutputsexceedingthetargetsset.Theprojectwasquitechallengingintermsofyearroundnationaldeliveryandretention.However,withacreativeandmoreflexibledeliveryplanwewereabletoofferopportunitiestothewidercommunitywithoutstandingresults.Theprojecthasdirectbenefitsforeveryoneinvolved:§ Communitymembershavingincreasedaccesstonatureandallofitsbenefits,livinghealthierandgreenerlifestyles.§ Communitymembershavingagreaterawarenessandunderstandingonwhattheycandotoprotectournaturalenvironment.§ Communitymembersusingnatureasamediumtounderstandandintegratewithpeoplefromallbackgrounds§ Participantshavehadincreasedopportunitiestodevelopandgrowintheenvironmentalarena,providingmorevolunteeringandemploymentopportunities.§ Communityorganisationshavedevelopedtheirinfrastructuretobemorerobustandsustainable,safelyintroducingmemberstothepowerofengagingwithnature§ Environmentalorganisationshavereachedoutandaremoreconfidentworkingwithpeopleofallbackgrounds.Developingcreativityindeliveryandopportunitiesto
