D_14217 Back to the Hive: Alef-Beis Recognition Game By Montreal Teachers Center Torah Umesorah Adapted from JD's Firsties Grade Level: Early Childhood, Elementary Description: This beehive-themed card game can be used to review print or script Alef-Beis letters. Play the game by having students take turns picking a card from the pile. Once the card is taken, in order to be allowed to keep it, the student must correctly identify the letter and/or its sound. The goal of the game is to try to amass as many cards as possible. But watch out! If you pick a “Back to the Hive!” card, you will need to return all of the cards which you have collected to the pile and begin again! Please Note: This item is missing a print Beis and does not include Osiyos Sofiyos in both print and script. (Blank templates are provided enabling you to add any letters you would like to this game.) What to download Download the print-ready PDF file (includes lesson plan/instructions). Goals/Objectives: Students will practice identifying the names and/or sounds of the letters by playing this game. Materials Needed: Cardstock Color printer Paper guillotine or scissor Instructions: 1. Print the game materials on cardstock. 2. Cut out the cards. 3. Shuffle the cards. Place them in a pile, face-down, on the square which states, “Place cards here”. 4. The first child should pick a card and identify the letter written on it and/or its sound. If the child is correct he can keep the card. If the child is incorrect he must place the card at the bottom of the pile. It is then the next player’s turn. 5. If a child draws the “Back to the Hive!” card he must return all of his cards to the bottom of the pile. If the child does not have any cards, he looses a turn. 6. The game continues in this manner until the teacher calls it to an end. Variations: This game can be adapted to many other types of card games such as Memory, etc.
