Kristen, Annette and Paul Hoverman will give a summer music recital at First Church on Saturday, August 22 at 7:00 p.m. Kristen will be a senior at Bowl-ing Green State University and is a Flute Performance major with a minor in Business Entrepreneurship. This summer Kristen received a grant to write a research paper on music entrepreneurship and has been working in Ann Arbor, Michigan, while working on music for this recital. Paul is our Senior Choir Director at First Church, but also keeps active playing trumpet. He is a member of the Lima Symphony Orchestra and also plays in the Ohio Northern Faculty Brass Quintet. His wife, Annette will be accompany-ing Kristen and Paul on piano. She has a piano studio in Van Wert and is ac-tive accompanying throughout the region. Gloria Wendel will also assist Paul on organ. Music to be performed will include Claude Bolling’s Jazz Suite for flute and pi-ano as well as his Toot Suite for Trumpet, piano, bass and drums. Rod Srouffe of Van Wert and James Leaman of Lima will assist on bass and drums. Other music to be performed will include the Flor Peeter’s Sonata for trumpet and piano, and flute selections by Ibert and Enesco. The public is invited to attend.
The new year begins on January first, but for many families the end of August is the start of a new year too. “Back to school” is often a dreaded phrase to youngsters but a welcome one to parents, and retailers too. Younger students generally “move up” and older ones some-times “move out.” First Church wishes a blessing on all the teachers and students from preschool through college age. In our Sunday, August 23rd, worship services we will recognize and bless all the faculty and students from our public schools and our church education department. New Bibles will be presented to those affiliated with our
church who are going into the third grade. We hope you will be able to join us.

“In the 1959 Broadway production, The Sound of Music, the family von Trapp is bound together by a common love of music. After discussions with Deb and Kelsey Nedderman, it appears that a force bind-ing the family Nedderman is a common devotion to their church. “It might trace back to Lonnie’s mom,” suggested Deb. “Unless you were conta-gious, you went to church.” And so it was for the children Drew, Jordan, Colin, and Kelsey as they and their parents sus-tained a four-year record of perfect attendance at the First United Methodist Sunday School. But it does not stop with perfect attendance in SS classes. Drew is now 25 years old, recently engaged to marry, and working on his Masters Degree in phar-macy at Wright State University. Jordan, 23 years of age, is serving in Iraq, and Colin, age 21 is in school at Ball State University; all three served as ushers when in high school. They attended their own SS classes and helped in other classes when asked. They were active in the UMC Youth and participated in several mission trips, and could be found during Vacation Bible School pitching in where needed. Kelsey, who graduated in May from Crest-view High School and is headed for Owens Tech to study physical therapy, was especially enthused to tell the sleuth about Youth Group. We meet for Cell Group every Wednesday where we focus on real- life topics. Sunday evenings are a little more recrea-tional, but the meetings are always meaningful.” Kelsey recalls mission trips to Toronto and to West Virginia. “I saw God in the eyes of the homeless and the eyes of the poor children. When we offered food or when we spent time talking to them, there was a sparkle,” Kelsey mused.
by Al Arnold
Deb has served as Sunday School atten-dance secretary for several years. “I deliver the books to the classrooms, collect them, and record the attendance. I also count the money.” She has served as a substitute SS teacher, worked with Bible School, hosted Discovery Group, and traveled with the youth to missions in Chicago and West Vir-ginia. Lonnie is a member of the video team and has served on the Pre-School Board as well as on the Education Committee. “First Church feels like a family to us,” Deb added. “Our kids receive great sup-port from Dillon and Jon, as was the case with Jim Dunaway. Often church members congratulated the boys and Kelsey on their accomplishments and that means a lot to us.” The sleuth salutes a congregation that is like family and salutes a family like the Neddermans.

Acts 4 Ministry classifieds
You have probably heard about the new Acts 4 Ministry at First Church. The fourth chapter of Acts tells how the early Christians were of “one heart and one soul.” When any of them were in need those who were able shared what they had to meet those needs. We are trying to match the needs and abilities at First Church and in our community. There is an Acts 4 “toolbox” located in the Jefferson Street lobby. You can write down your needs or abilities and slip them in the toolbox. You can also help by spreading the word about Acts 4. We are expanding the ministry by featuring Acts 4 Classified Ads in this and future newsletters and on our web site. Go to www.vanwertfirst.net and click on the Acts 4 toolbox. If you want your needs or abilities to be publicized just mark them “classified ad” when you drop them in the toolbox.
You contact the person individually to set up times, payment and job expectations. The church is simply offering a space to let you know of people who might help you. We are not responsible in any way for the work or contract you initiate. Contact Jana Thompson or Susan Mathew to submit an ad.

Let’s Read For A Year!
So what have you noticed about the readings? What is your perception of the Bible as you read the entire book? I would love to hear your comments. If you feel like sharing, please either e-mail me your thoughts ([email protected]) or write me a note. Personally, I’ve struggled staying up with the readings. But I am overwhelmed by how often God reaches out to us in as many ways as possible. God is good….all the time. Please share your thoughts!

Youth Group info and updates for August Teens, Parents and Everyone else, Howdy Everybody! Summer is almost over! I can hardly believe it. In the summer everyone needs a little break and the youth program takes one to recharge and get ready for the year. It begins in July and ends this month on August 16th. It gives us all some time to spend with our families, mine included! Summer is such an important time for the youth. They learn so many things and Ichthus is a big part of that. I wanted to again just say thank you to all of you for the things you do to support the youth. I got so many responses from the teenager’s thank you’s last month…I decided to list them here again…just in case you missed them. So here are some thank you notes and also their thoughts on Ichthus! Dear Church Family, On behalf of First UMC Youth, I just wanted to send out a thank you to all the church members that supported us in sending us to Ichthus this past month. As many of you know, its a music festival for Christian teenagers where we camp out, and you can go to concerts (whatever kind of music you like there is a Concert J). However, in our youth group it is so much more than that. By giving us food, money, prayers, and support many had the chance to have a life changing experience with God. We also all got to build up a nice tolerance to cold showers, port‐a‐pottys, rain, and no sleep. Anyways, I know we all had a good time and again I would just like to thank you all for helping us to finally get there. It was an awesome trip!
Sincerely, Beth Howell, Senior, FUMC Youth
Dear Church Family, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for all of the support and prayers that were made to make this Ichthus trip possible for the youth. With your help we were able to have 40 people on this trip. The church was very helpful with getting us sup‐plies from the Ichthus Board which made things easier on all of us. Also, the church supported some youth who could not pay their own way to go, that way anyone who wanted to go would be able to go on this amazing experience. For me personally this trip was very different from my first Ichthus experience. On this year’s trip I had many reasons to be thankful. For me this trip was not only about the concerts, getting away from Ohio, and hanging with friends, but about giving my testimony and getting a Purity Ring while both of my parents were there. I truly believe that with Jon as our leader there is no way that you can go on a trip like this with him and not get something out of it. Normally Ichthus has a main focus topic that Jon bases our group’s thoughts on but this year they had their 40th anniversary so they had no topic for him to follow. Leaving Jon to choose a topic, he chose love. Love was a very tough topic for many of us, but it opened a door to a deeper understanding of love. The bible verse for this topic was Philippians 1:9…”so this is my prayer that your love will flourish and that you will not only love much but well.” Thank you for giving us the help and support we needed to make this trip possible. This experience is so amazing and allows a person a better understand of themselves, God, and their peers that surround them.
With love, Kellie Mace, Senior, FUMC Youth
