Word Study

• Every lesson targets a specific “TEK” (Texas Essential Knowledge).

• Students will manipulate letters to build words (most lessons result in a “mystery word”). Students will sort words into groups, discuss how the words are related, and the meaning of the words. Students will practice by using these words in their writing.

• They can transfer the spelling pattern learned and apply to make new words.

• Assessments provided by the district will follow each unit of study and allow students to apply what they have learned on building words, finding patterns, and utilizing the words in their writing. No more memorization.

Reading

• We follow the Lucy’s Calkins Reading Writing Project.

• Students’ reading levels are identified and we work with them on building their reading levels by reading ‘just right’ books.

• We also place students in guided reading groups and work in small group sessions with every child.

• 2nd grade is all about growing as readers and we highly encourage you to read everyday with your child and questioning what they read.

Writing

• BCE follows the Lucy’s Calkins Reading Writing Project.

• Our writing is student-centered and they generate their own ideas to write about.

• Students write with pens.• Students are allowed to choose and ‘fix-up fancy-

up’ a piece of writing to be graded a few times each grading period.

• We will use rubrics to grade writing and we will keep most writing samples.

Science• Science lessons will be engaging and hands-

on.

• Students will be visiting the science lab periodically to complete investigations and experiments.

• We will also study live animals including:

mealworms

Social Studies

• Our Social Studies curriculum focuses on communities, citizenship, landforms, and geography.

• Most social studies content over historical figures and American heroes will be integrated into reading.

Math

• We are teaching your children to be more fluent with numbers and have a greater sense of numbers, where they can compute facts quickly.

• It is still important to practice facts and building numbers with your children at home.

• 2nd graders will focus on counting numbers fowards and backwards up to 1,200.

• Addition and subtraction with regrouping (borrowing) is also a huge concept to be mastered in 2nd grade.
