The Structure of Readers’ and Writers’ Workshop
Readers’ Workshop:
• Supports and challenges all students
• Allows time for students to do authentic reading
• Provides a structure for the teacher to work 1-on-1 or in small groups to give targeted feedback and instruction to students
• Offers a time for students to use critical thinking and analysis as required by CCSS (and good teaching)
Come to our Literacy Night later in the year to learn more about Readers’ Workshop. Time and date to be announced.
Writers’ Workshop
What is Writers’ Workshop?• Teacher provides direct instruction on
the writing process, craft, genre and mechanics
Writers’ Workshop
All students learn about specific genres• Narrative- to tell a story
• Opinion/ Argumentative- to convince another about an opinion or idea
• Informational- to research or explain something
Writers’ Workshop
What we expect of our writers
• To stress the importance of the writing process and not just the final product
Writers’ Workshop
How to help your child at home:• Be a good model
• Let you child see you write and talk with him/her about how you use writing in your life
• Provide a journal or diary to record his or her day
• Don’t write for your child- praise your child’s writing, ignore minor errors
Math- Engage NY• The district is currently piloting several math
programs
• For uniformity our school has chosen to pilot one program-Engage NY
• Engage NY is directly aligned to and written by the authors of the Common Core.
• It is being adopted by many districts including Berkley, Live Oak, Pajaro
• Piloting is occurring because CA has not formally adopted any state curriculum
• The assessments are directly related to the Smarter Balance assessments that the 3rd-5th are taking at the end of the year
