Are you driven by curiosity to seek answers to the many questions we have
about the world, or are you wishing to develop a rewarding career in one of the
many jobs where science is critical?

COURSE OUTLINE
Scientists are adventurers, driven by curiosity to seek answers
to the many questions we have about the world and the universe
beyond. Scientists develop new approaches, develop
technologies and solve problems to improve our health,
environment and lifestyles. A science degree opens up a vast
range of career options.
The CDU Bachelor of Science course offers flexibility and
diversity with a focus on gaining professional experience,
whether as an ecologist, spatial scientist, biomedical scientist,
nutritionist, or in other science fields.
Students can study externally or internally and there are
opportunities to get practical experience within your degree.
Field and Laboratory experiences expose students to the
distinctive environments and communities of northern
Australia and the region, and their associated challenges in
environmental management and public health, including
Indigenous health. Students have opportunities to gain
professional experience with government agencies, research
groups (both within CDU and external), and with privaye
companies that employ science graduates.
Student practical experiences may include activities in the
iconoc Litchfield, or World heritage Kakadu or Tjoritja/West
MacDonnell national parks, or activities with staff from the
Research Institute for Environment and Livelihood or Menzies
School of Health Research.
Within the Bachelor of Science (Geographic Information
Science) major, the opportunity to gain a Remote Pilot Licence
for commercial use of drones (within an appropriately certified
business or company) is currently offered.
Students may also choose to integrate studies from a variety of
areas outside of traditional science disciplines into their
science degree.
Graduates are equipped to demonstrate and apply an
understanding of their chosen areas of science, including
concepts, theories and principles, to practise in real situations.
Students become effective problem solvers able to think
globally, apply logical and critical thinking, apply an
understanding of scientific and technological factors, and are
able to consider issues from various cultural, economic and
other societal perspectives.
COURSE STRUCTURE
The Bachelor of Science consists of 240 credit points of
common, specialist elective and elective units. Students take
specialist elective units from within the major and up to eight
elective units as described in the course outline. Elective units
can include any CDU undergraduate units, including other
science units.
Students may complete a General Science course or majors are
available in:
> Ecology
> Geographic Information Science
> Biomedical Science
POST GRADUATE OPTIONS
Students completing the Bachelor of Science and achieving a
credit average may enrol in the Bachelor of Science (Honours)
and may then go on to complete postgraduate research
qualifications such as a PhD. Graduating students in the
Ecology or Geographic Information Science majors may enrol in
the Masters of Environmental Management.
The Research Institute for the Environment and Livelihoods
(RIEL) based at CDU is known for world-class scholarship and
scientific research. CDU was ranked fourth among all
Australian research organisations for research quality in
environment and ecology by Thompson Reuters (as measured
by citation impact over the 11 years 2000-2010). Postgraduate
study with RIEL is an exciting opportunity for CDU students.
VET FEEDER INFO
Students with a relevant Certificate IV or Diploma, including the
CDU Diploma of Science, can gain credit for their previous
studies.
