Practising as a Foreign LawyerIf you are admitted, qualified or authorised to practise in any jurisdiction, you are allowed to practise foreign law in Singapore if you register as a “Foreign Lawyer” under Part IXA of the Legal Profession Act with the Attorney-General’s Chambers’ Legal Profession (International Services) Secretariat. You will not need to take any courses or examinations.Practising as in-House CounselYou may be able to practise as in-house counsel in an organisation in Singapore. You will be exposed to a practical real-world application of the law, equipping you with the academic knowledge and key transferrable skills that are in demand by employers.1. Knowledge and understanding of the English Legal System

and the substantive rules of English law within its political, historical, global and economic context; its relationship with ethical and moral issues and the ways in which lawyers can effect social change through the application of legal principles.

2. The ability to analyse, critically evaluate and produce a synthesis of well-established and innovative legal rules, doctrine, policy, principles and concepts; to apply this to a diverse range of practical and theoretical issues and problems, recognising and making evaluative judgements about the appropriateness of different methods of problem solving, in order to make a reasoned choice from relevant alternatives.

3. The ability to make proficient use of information and materials from a variety of sources, including knowledge of the legal conventions relevant to English Law, in the critical evaluation and solution of legal issues and problems.

4. The skills necessary to assimilate knowledge, frame appropriate questions, marshal coherent and rational argument, and relate theory and practice in order to draw independent conclusions through the ability to strategically plan for one’s own learning method and structured response to meaningful feedback.

5. The ability to understand and use the English language with precision, orally and in writing, in relation to legal issues, in order to make effective oral and written presentations which are coherent and comprehensible to others.

Combining the academic with the practical, you will have the opportunity to work on simulated cases with simulated clients. You will get a wide understanding across a range of legal areas, with core modules covering the subject areas required by the Joint Academic Stage Board for a qualifying law degree.

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE & CONTENT

Students will attend a combination of lectures, tutorials and workshops in the programme. The Bachelor of Laws (Hons) programme may be completed in a minimum of 3 years by enrolling in 2 to 3 units per term over 3 terms. Each 30 credit-point unit is supported with 48 to 60 contact hours made up of classes over weekdays.

Students who successfully complete the programme will be awarded the prestigious Bachelor of Laws (Hons) degree from Birmingham City University. The degree will be the same as that awarded to on-campus students of the University. Graduates will be allowed to use the title LL.B (Hons) after their names. Graduates are able to attend their graduation in the UK or attend a local graduation ceremony in Singapore.

Graduation & RecognitionLearning, Teaching and Assessment Methods

A wide variety of assessment approaches are used across the programme. These include coursework, presentations (oral and written), journal and diary keeping, drafting, role-play, project work and examinations (case-based, open-book and closed-book). Assessment methods may vary according to individual module requirements.Theoretical case studies and problem-based learning are used to develop students’ abilities in analysis and critical evaluation. These skills can then be further developed through the clinical legal education aspects of the programme. Students’ understanding of the contexts underpinning the law and the relationship between theory and practice are developed through this process.The acquisition of research skills is central to the learning strategy of the programme, both relative to paper-based and/or electronic learning resources. Students are encouraged to be independent in their research, and innovative in the use of information found through that research. Students are encouraged through the process of guided, self-directed and student centred learning to develop these skills incrementally throughout the programme, with increasing emphasis on independence of thought and approach in the later stages of the course.

LAW 5023 Criminal Law The aim of the unit is to explore aspects of the substantive Criminal Law and to provide a sound basis for the understanding and application of the legal concepts and principles involved. In accordance with the ethos and aims of the Bachelor of Laws (Hons) programmes, the subject matter will be approached through a critical examination of the historical, political and ethical background to the modern law and through an emphasis on how the criminal law operates in a social context.LAW 5024 Law of ContractThe aim of the unit is to explore aspects of the substantive law of contract and to provide a sound basis for the understanding and application of the legal concepts and principles involved. In accordance with the ethos and aims of the Bachelor of Laws (Hons) programmes, the subject matter will be approached through a critical examination of the historical, political and economic background to the modern law and through an emphasis on how the law operates in context, including how it links with the law of tort and with restitution.LAW 5025 Law of TortThe aim of the unit is to explore aspects of substantive Tort Law and to provide a sound basis for the understanding and application of the legal concepts and principles involved. In accordance with the ethos and aims of the Bachelor of Laws (Hons) programmes, the subject matter will be approached through a critical examination of the historical, political, economic and ethical background to the modern law and through an emphasis on how the law operates in context, including how it links with the Law of Contract.LAW 5026 English Legal System and PracticeThe unit aims to provide students with foundation knowledge of the principal features of the English Legal System as well as developing many of the practical lawyering, study and employability skills required by students throughout their legal education and into employment. The approach is very practical and designed to enable students to develop the required skills at their own speed. Personal development planning and self-reflection are important features of this unit.

UNIT OUTLINE

LAW 6040 Equity and TrustsIn accordance with the ethos and aims of the Bachelor of Laws (Hons) programmes, the subject matter will be approached through a critical examination of the historical, political and social background of equity and trusts; and will develop knowledge of and the ability to research, analyse and apply the principles that govern trusts law and equity. This unit also utilises some of the principles explored in the law of contract and is studied alongside land law, in which the student will study the influence and impact of equity and trusts of land.LAW 6041 Land LawThe aim of the Land Law Unit is to introduce and develop aspects of the substantive law of Land Law and provide a sound basis for the understanding and application of the legal concepts and principles involved. There will be an emphasis on how the law operates in context and the Unit will focus on developing, alongside the substantive knowledge, skills of critical analysis, problem solving, legal research and, in particular, written communication and advice introduced at Level 4. LAW 6042 Law of the European UnionIn accordance with the ethos and aims of the Bachelor of Laws (Hons) programmes, the subject matter of this unit relating to the EU’s constitutional and administrative law will be approached through a critical examination of the EU’s historical and political background as an organisation, its impact on EU citizens, and its relationship to the UK’s constitutional system. The substantive law of the EU will be approached through a critical examination of the subject areas of EU law relating to the Single European Market, and examining how such areas of EU Law have impacted upon English Law.Throughout the unit there will be an emphasis on the further development of legal skills, in particular the skills of independent and group research, legal analysis and criticism. These skills are essential prerequisites to both essay-writing and problem-solving. Seminar discussion will be used to develop critical oral communication skills.LAW 6043 Public Law and Civil RightsThe aim of this core unit is to explore key issues in the development of modern constitutions, to provide a general introduction to the British constitution, emphasising historical and political contexts, and to develop an understanding of the importance attached to obligations of accountability owed by government to both Parliament and the Courts (judicial review). The unit also aims to examine critically the relationship between citizen and state from the perspective of fundamental civil rights.
