1. DESCRIPTIONThe BA364NG is an Ex nA and Ex tc certified, fieldmounting, two input Counter which will accept pulseson one or both inputs. The Counter may beconfigured to show one of the following in engineeringunits:

Input A + Input b

Input A - Input b

Input A count direction controlled by Input b

Quadrature decoder (Input A and Input b electrically 90o apart)

A smaller six digit display may be activated to showthe composite pulse rate in engineering units persecond, minute or per hour.

In addition to counting applications, the BA634NG candisplay the position, direction of movement and speedof a shaft or cable using the quadrature encoder.

The optically-isolated pulse output may be configuredto synchronously retransmit either of the two pulseinputs or a scaled output when the least significantdigit of the total display is incremented.

This instruction manual supplements the abbreviatedinstruction sheet supplied with each instrument.

The BA364NG is ATEX Ex nA and Ex tc certified andcomplies with the European ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU. The main sections of this manual describe ATEXgas certification. ATEX dust certification of theBA364NG is described in Appendix 1.

For international applications the BA364NG also hasIECEx certification which is described in Appendix 2.

For applications in the USA and Canada theBA364NG Counter has ETL & cETL certificationwhich is described in Appendix 3.

2. OPERATIONFig 1 shows a simplified block diagram of theBA364NG Counter. The instrument has twoinputs, A and b, which can be individuallyconfigured to accept pulses from most types ofsensor. The BA364NG can display the totalnumber of pulses received from each input, or theirsum or difference, together with associated rateson a separate display.

2.1 InitialisationEach time power is applied to a BA364NG Counterinitialisation is performed. After a short delay thefollowing display sequence occurs:

All segments of the display are activated.

Counter starts functioning, using theconfiguration information stored in theinstrument’s permanent memory. Unless totaland grand total displays have been reset, newpulses will be added to the existing totals.

2.2 ControlsThe BA364NG Counter is controlled and configuredvia four front panel push buttons. In the displaymode i.e. when the instrument is counting the pushbutton functions are:

2.3 DisplaysThe BA364NG Counter has two digital displaysand associated annunciators, plus a pulse inputindicator as shown on the front cover of thismanual.

Total Shows the total pulse count on thedisplay upper eight digit display. May be

reset via front panel push buttonsor by a remote reset switch.

Rate Shows the pulse rate on the lowerDisplay six digit display. Total and rate

displays may be reversed.

Pulse input This disc in the lower left handindicator corner of the display 'rotates' for

two seconds each time an inputpulse is received on either input.Appears to rotate continuouslywhen input frequency on eitherinput exceeds 0.5Hz.

3. CERTIFICATION

The BA364NG has ATEX and IECEx Ex nA gas andEx tc dust certification. The main sections of thisinstruction manual describes ATEX gas certification.ATEX dust certification is described in Appendix 1 andIECEx gas and dust certification in Appendix 2. TheBA364NG also has ETL and cETL certification forapplications in the USA and Canada. SeeAppendix 3.

3.1 ATEX Ex nA certificationNotified Body Intertek Testing and Certification Ltdhave issued the BA364NG with a Type ExaminationCertificate number ITS16ATEX48409X. This hasbeen used to confirm compliance with the EuropeanATEX Directive for Group II, Category 3G equipment.The instrument carries the Community Mark and,subject to local codes of practice, may be installed inany of the European Economic Area (EEA) membercountries and in the EEA EFTA states, Iceland,Liechtenstein and Norway. ATEX certificates are alsoacceptable in Switzerland and Turkey. The EuropeanCommission's Blue Guide lists the member states,overseas countries and territories that have adoptedharmonisation legislation.

This section of the instruction manual describes ATEXinstallations in explosive gas atmospheres conformingwith EN 60079-14 Electrical installations design,selection and erection. When designing systems forinstallation outside the UK the local Code of Practiceshould be consulted.

3.2 Zones, gas groups and T ratingThe Counter has been certified as Group II Category3G Ex ic nA IIC T5 Gc Ta = -40ºC to +60°Capparatus. This is non-sparking apparatus complyingwith EN 60079-15 Equipment protection by type ofprotection 'n' that minimises the risk of arcs or sparkscapable of creating an ignition hazard occurringduring conditions of normal operation.

The Counter's front panel push button contacts arenon incendive and have been certified intrinsicallysafe Ex ic as shown on the Type ExaminationCertificate. This allows the Counter to be adjustedand configured live when installed in Zone 2.

When connected to a suitable system the BA364NGCounter may be installed in:

Zone 2 explosive gas air mixture notlikely to occur, and if it does will only exist for a short time.

Be used with gases in groups:Group A propaneGroup B ethyleneGroup C hydrogen

In gases that may safely be used with equipment having a temperature classification of:

T1 450oCT2 300oCT3 200oCT4 135oCT5 100oC

At ambient temperatures between -40 and +60oC.

This allows use with all commonly used industrialgases except carbon disulphide CS2.

3.3 Safety parametersThe certificate specifies input safety parameters innormal operation i.e. without faults for all theinstrument terminals. Where only a voltage oronly a current is specified, the unspecifiedparameter will be defined by components withinthe BA364NG.

3.4 Special conditions for safe useThe Ex nA certificate has an ‘X’ suffix indicatingthat the certificate defines special conditions forsafe use. These state that the BA364NG Countershould be:

a. Supplied from a limited energy circuit withoutput parameters in normal operation equalto, or less than the instrument’s inputparameters. The certificate states that It isnot necessary to power the instrument froman intrinsically safe interface, such as acertified shunt diode safety barrier or agalvanic isolator to comply with thisrequirement.

b. Fitted with cable entry glands or conduitfittings which maintain the impact andingress protection of the enclosure. CertifiedEx e or Ex n components satisfy theserequirements.

The BA364NG is supplied fitted with onecertified M20 stopping plug and onetemporary hole plug which should bereplaced with the required gland or conduitfitting.

3.5 Power supply The input safety parameters for the power supplyterminals 1 and 2 are:

Ui = 30V dcIi = 100mA

This allows the BA364NG to be powered from anydc supply which in normal operation has an outputof less 30V and 100mA. See section 4.1 forpower supply recommendations.

3.6 Pulse input The BA364NG Counter has two pulse inputs, A and b,that may be individually configured for use with mosttypes of sensor. Each input is a separate Ex nAcircuit, although the negative side of each input isinternally connected to the negative side of the powersupply and reset terminal RS2. See Fig 1. The twoinputs should not be connected in parallel.

Some types of sensor that may be connected to theBA364NG inputs, such as a switch contact or a 2-wireproximity detector, require energising to determinetheir state. For sensors requiring energising fitting anexternal link between terminals 3 & 4 of the BA364NGfor input A and between terminals 7 & 8 for input b,connects an internal 7V, 6mA supply to the respectiveinput. Energising is not required when a BA364NGinput is connected to a voltage pulse source.

Fitting an energising link changes the safetyparameters of each BA364NG input as shown in thefollowing table which also shows the types of sensorrequiring energising (link fitting).

3.7 Remote reset terminalsThe BA364NG total display my be reset byconnecting the external reset terminals RS1 and RS2together for more than one second. The two resetterminals have the following safety parameters innormal operation:

Ui = 30V Uo = 3.8VIo = 1mA

3.8 Certification label informationThe Counter certification information label is fittedin a recess on the top outer surface of theinstrument enclosure. It shows the ATEX andIECEx certification information plus BEKAassociates name, location, year of manufactureand the instrument serial number.

4. SYSTEM DESIGN FOR HAZARDOUS AREAS

When correctly installed in Zone 2 the BA364NGCounter may be connected to almost any apparatusin the safe area and to Ex n, Ex e, Ex p and Ex dprotected apparatus located in Zone 2. Because theBA364NG is not certified intrinsically safe it should notbe connected to an intrinsically safe system.

BEKA Application Guide AG310, Guide for Installationof [extra low voltage d.c.] Ex nA instrumentation,which can be downloaded from www.beka.co.uk,contains explanations and recommendations for theinstallation of Ex nA equipment.

In addition to being able to be connected to otherequipment in the safe area and in Zone 2, theBA364NG may also be connected to suitablyprotected and certified equipment located in Zone 1.This is illustrated in Fig 5 and explained in ApplicationGuide AG310.

There are four design requirements:

1. The BA364NG should be powered from a circuitthat has output safety parameters in normaloperation equal to, or less than, the input safetyparameters for terminals 1 and specified by theBA364NG ATEX Type Examination Certificate.

2. BA364NG input and reset terminals should onlybe connected to circuits having safetyparameters in normal operation compliant withthe BA364NG safety parameters which arespecified by the ATEX Type ExaminationCertificate.

3. Hazardous area apparatus to which the BA364NG is connected should be protected by a technique suitable for the Zone in which the equipment is located such as Ex n or Ex e if located in Zone 2. Equipment protected by intrinsic safety should not be connected to a BA364NG.

4. Wiring should comply with Clause 9 ofEN 60079-14.

When designing a system it is important to rememberthat terminals 2, 6 and RS2 are interconnected withinthe BA364NG. See Fig 1.

4.1 Power supplyThe BA364NG Counter requires a minimum of 10Vbetween terminal 1 & 2 and consumes:

10mA without optional backlightplus 6mA when terminals 3 & 4 are linkedplus 6mA when terminals 7 & 8 are linkedplus 16mA with optional backlight

A 24V dc regulated, current limited supply locatedin a safe area is suitable.

The power supply should meet the requirementsfor personnel safety so that ‘live maintenance’ cansafely be performed. The implicit requirement forgalvanic isolation from the mains supply ensuresthat the possible difficulties from circulating earthcurrents caused by mains faults is minimised. InEuropean terms if the power supply is CE markedit is almost certainly acceptable.

To comply with the requirements of EN 60079:14Electrical installations design, selection anderection, each of the wires entering the hazardousarea should be individually fused and contain ameans of isolation. These two requirements maybe satisfied by using DIN rail mounted terminalsincorporating easily removable fuses which can beextracted to achieve isolation as shown in Fig 2. If an input current safety parameter Ii is specified, asuitably rated fuse will ensure that it is notcontinuously exceeded in normal operation.

Clear identification of, and easy access to themeans of isolation is essential for their effectiveuse. It is also necessary to ensure that themaintenance procedure makes sure thatunauthorised re-closure of the switches does notoccur.

It is not considered necessary to have a means ofisolation or electrical protection for the screen.

For some applications Ex nA instrumentationenergised by a current limited power supply orinstrument that can be switched off, is consideredadequate and to comply with the requirements ofthe standard.

4.2 Pulse inputsThe BA364NG can display the total numer of pulsesreceived and their rate from a wide variety of pulseoutput sensors located in a Zone 2 hazardous areasor in a safe area. Fig 3 shows the connections whenthe sensors are located in Zone 2 and Fig 4 theconnections required when the sensors are in a safearea.

Terminals 2, 6, 10 and RS2 of the BA364NG Counterare internally connected together. If any of theseterminals are earthed, as shown in Figs 2 & 3, theother terminals should only be connected to the sameearth, or to circuits that have 500V rms insulation toearth.

Fig 2 illustrates the basic circuit that is used for allBA364NG Counter installations. For simplicity,connections for the pulse output, optional alarms andoptional 4/20mA output are shown separately insections 7 and 10 of this manual.

Alternatively the pulse sources may be located in thesafe area as shown in Fig 4.

When designing a system it is important toremember that terminals 2, 6, 10 and RS2 areinterconnected within the BA364NG See Fig 1.

Switch contact, proximity detector and opencollector sensors require energising which isachieved by linking Counter terminals 3 and 4 forinput A and terminals 7 and 8 for input b.

4.2.2 Switch contact input

contact located in Zone 2 or in the safe area may bedirectly connected to pulse input terminals 5 and 6and to terminals 7 and 8. Both Counter pulse inputsare non incendive, allowing connection to unprotectedswitch contacts located in Zone 2. The switch sensorand associated wiring should be able to withstand a500V rms insulation test to earth. Most magneticallyactivated reed relays comply with these requirements.The BA364NG contains a configurable debouncecircuit to prevent contact bounce being counted. Seesection 6.6.

4.2.3 Open collector inputSensors with an open collector output located inZone 2 or in the safe area may be directly connectedto input terminals 5 & 6 or to 7 & 8 providing theSensor and associated wiring can withstand a 500Vrms insulation test to earth.

The BA364NG contains a configurable debouncecircuit to prevent false triggering. See section 6.6.

4.2.5 Magnetic pick-off input Sensors incorporating a magnetic pick-off will usuallyhave a low level ac voltage output which a BA364NGCounter can sense when configured for a CoiL input.The Counters input terminals may be connected toany Zone 2 certified magnetic pick-off sensor,providing the output in normal operation is equal to orless than 30V the Counter's Ui. The sensor andassociated wiring should be able to withstand a 500Vrms insulation test to earth.The BA364NG contains a configurable debouncecircuit to prevent false triggering. See section 6.6.

4.2.6 Voltage pulse inputTwo voltage pulse input ranges are selectable in theBA364NG Counters configuration menu, VoLt5 L andVoLt5 H. The Counters input terminals may beconnected to any Zone 2 certified voltage pulseoutput sensor, providing the output in normaloperation is equal to or less than 30V the Counter'sUi. The sensor and associated wiring should be ableto withstand a 500V rms insulation test to earth.

The BA364NG contains a configurable debouncecircuit to prevent false triggering. See section 6.6.

4.3 Remote resetThe BA364NG Counter's total display may beremotely reset by connecting terminals RS1 andRS2 together. Permanent interconnection inhibitscounting. Remote resetting may be accomplishedby any mechanically operated switch located in thesame Zone 2 as the Counter. The reset circuit isnon incendive. The reset switch and theassociated wiring should be able to withstand a500V rms insulation test to earth.

A BA364NG may also be remotely reset from thesafe area. Any switch may be used. Fig 4illustrates how a BA364NG may be reset from boththe safe and the hazardous area.

The BA364NG total display may also be resetwhen the & and * push buttons are operatedsimultaneously in the totalising mode i.e. when theinstrument is counting. See 6.24

5. INSTALLATION

5.1 LocationThe BA364NG Counter is housed in a robust IP66glass reinforced polyester (GRP) enclosureincorporating an armoured glass window andstainless steel fittings making it suitable for exteriormounting in most industrial on-shore and off-shoreinstallations. The Counter should be positionedwhere the display is not in continuous direct sunlight.

Field wiring terminals are located on the rear of theCounter assembly as shown in Fig 7.

To ensure electrical continuity between the twoconduit or cable entries, the enclosure back-box isfitted with a bonding plate which includes an M4 earthstud. This bonding plate may be mounted on theinside or outside of the enclosure. If the carbonloaded GRP enclosure is not bolted to an earthedpost or structure, this earth stud should be connectedto a local earth or the plant potential equalisingconductor.

An insulated M4 stud is provided in the bottom righthand corner of the back-box for interconnecting cablescreens.

The BA364NG Counter may be pipe mounted using aBA393G pipe mounting kit.

5.2 Installation ProcedureFig 6 illustrates the instrument installation procedure.

A. Remove the Counter assembly by unscrewingthe four captive 'A' screws.

B. Mount the enclosure back-box on a flat surfaceand secure with screws or bolts through the four'B' holes. Alternatively use one of the pipemounting kits which are available asaccessories.

C. Remove the temporary hole plug and install anappropriate IP and temperature rated M20 x1.5mm cable gland or conduit fitting. If twoentries are required, the supplied IP66 stoppingplug should be replaced with an appropriate IPand temperature rated M20 x 1.5mm cable glandor conduit fitting.

D. Feed the field wiring through the cable entry inthe back-box and connect the wires to theterminals on the rear of the instrument assemblyas shown in Fig 6. Tighten cable glands toensure they are sealed and replace theinstrument assembly on the back-box. Finallyevenly tighten the four 'A' screws.

5.3 EMCThe BA364NG complies with the requirements of theEuropean EMC Directive 2014/30/EU. For specifiedimmunity all wiring should be in screened twistedpairs, with the screens earthed at one point in thesafe area.

5.4 Units of measurement and tag markingon scale card.

The Counter's units of measurement and taginformation are shown on a scale card which slidesinto the instrument.

New Counters are supplied with a printed scale cardshowing the requested units of measurement and taginformation. If this information is not supplied whenthe instrument is ordered, a blank scale card will befitted which can easily be marked on-site with a drytransfer or a permanent marker. Custom printedscale cards are available from BEKA associates as anaccessory.

To remove the scale card from a Counter carefully pullthe transparent tab at the rear of the instrumentassembly away from the assembly as shown inFig 8a.

To replace the scale card carefully insert it into theslot on the right hand side of the input terminals asshown in Fig 8b. Force should be applied evenly toboth sides of the scale card to prevent it twisting.The card should be inserted until about 2mm of thetransparent tab remains protruding.

6.0 CONFIGURATION & CALIBRATIONThe BA364NG Counter is configured and calibratedvia four front panel push buttons. All theconfiguration functions are contained in an easy touse intuitive menu that is shown diagrammatically inFig 9.

Each menu function is summarised in section 6.3 ofthis manual and each summary includes a referenceto more detailed information.

The isolated pulse output, including configuration, isdescribed in section 7 of this manual. When factoryfitted optional alarms and the optional 4/20mA outputare included, additional functions appear in theconfiguration menu which are described in section 10of this manual.

All new BA364NG Counters are supplied calibratedas requested at the time of ordering. If calibration isnot requested, Counters will have factory defaultconfiguration as shown in the following table, but caneasily be re-configured on-site.

6.1 Calibration structureFig 8 shows the calibration structure of the BA364NGCounter. The two pulse inputs are processed by thecount function to produce a single output having theselected arithmetic function, such as the sum of pulseinput A and pulse input b. This output is passed tothe 5cALE . R and 5CALE . T functions allowing the rateand total displays to have different engineering units.

5CALE . t is a dividing factor that converts the outputfrom the Counter function into the required totaldisplay in engineering units. e.g. if the output fromthe Counter function is two pulses per pump strokeand a total display of thousands of pump strokes isrequired, 5CALE . t should be set to 2000.

5CALE . r is a dividing factor that converts the outputfrom the Counter function into a rate display withthe required engineering units. e.g. if the outputfrom the Counter function is two pulses per pumpstroke and it is required to display the pump strokerate, 5CALE . r should be set to 2.

The timebase t-bA5E is a multiplying factor thatdetermines if the instrument displays rate persecond, per minute or per hour.

The BA364NG uses ‘real’ decimal points. Movingthe position of a decimal point in a scale factor willaffect the instrument calibration.

6.2 Accessing configuration functionsThroughout this manual the instrument front panelpush buttons are shown as &, *, ( and ) andlegends displayed by the instrument are shown in aseven segment font as displayed by the Counter e.g.FiLtEr and 5CALE . r.

Access to the configuration menu is obtained byoperating the ( and ) push buttonssimultaneously. If the instrument is not protected bya security code the first parameter inPut-A will bedisplayed. If a security code other than the defaultcode 0000 has already been entered, the instrumentwill display CodE. Press ( to clear this prompt andenter the security code for the instrument using the& or * push button to adjust the flashing digit, andthe ( push button to transfer control to the next digit.If the correct code has been entered pressing ) willcause the first parameter inPut-A to be displayed. Ifan incorrect code is entered, or a push button is notoperated within ten seconds, the instrument willautomatically return to the display mode.

All configuration functions and prompts are shown onthe upper eight digit display.

Once within the configuration menu the requiredfunction can be selected by scrolling through themenu using the & and * push buttons. Theconfiguration menu is shown diagrammatically inFig 9.

When returning to the display mode followingreconfiguration, the BA364NG Counter will displaydAtA followed by 5AVE while the new information isstored in permanent memory.

If after accessing the configuration menu the intervalbetween operating any front panel push buttonexceeds one minute, the BA364NG will automaticallyreturn to the display mode and any configurationchanges will not be stored in permanent memory.When making changes to multiple configurationfunctions, it is therefore sensible to occasionallyreturn to the display mode to save the changes thathave already been made.

6.3 Summary of configuration functionsThis section summarises all the configurationfunctions. When read in conjunction with Fig 9 itprovides a quick aid for configuring the Counter. Ifmore detail is required, each summary contains areference to a full description of the function.

6.4 Input A: inPut-A

The Input A function contains two sub-functionsinP . tYPE and dEbounCE that define the type of inputand the amount of input noise rejection.

6.5 Input A type: inP. tYPE

inP . tYPE is a sub-menu in the inPut-A function whichdefines the type of input sensor or input pulse that theinstrument will count at Input-A. To check or changethe type of input, select inPut-A in the configurationmenu and press ( which will reveal the inP. tYPE

6.6 Input A debounce: dEbouncE

dEbouncE is an adjustable sub-menu whichprevents the input miscounting when the inputpulse has noisy edges, such as those resultingfrom a mechanical contact closing and bouncing.The debounce function only applies to the input inwhich the function is located.

Three levels of protection may be independentlyselected for each input. The amount of debounceapplied depends upon the type of Counter inputthat has been selected for the input in theassociated inP . tYPE function.

followed by ( to reveal the existing setting.Pressing the & or * button will scroll through thethree levels. When the required level has beenselected, pressing ) twice will enter the selectionand return the display to the configuration menu.

The following table shows the minimum time thatthe input pulse must be continuously above theupper input switching threshold and continuouslybelow the lower switching threshold to ensure thatthe Counter processes the input pulse. Inputswitching thresholds are shown in section 6.5.

6.12 Display update interval: uPdAtE

If either the rate or the total display is likely to changerapidly, a longer interval between display updatesmay simplify reading. This function allows one of sixdifferent display intervals between 0.5 and 5 secondsto be selected. The selected display update intervaldoes not affect the update time of any otherinstrument function.

To adjust the update interval select uPdAtE from theconfiguration menu and press ( to reveal thecurrent update interval. Pressing the & or *button will scroll through the six times. When therequired interval has been selected press ) to enterthe selection and return to the configuration menu.

6.13 Counting function: Count

This function defines the arithmetic relationshipbetween Inputs A and Input b. The following fourmodes may be selected:

6.14 Upper display: di5P-1

Usually the total count is shown on the largerupper eight digit display, but this function reversesthe display locations allowing rate to be shown onthe larger upper display and total on the smallerlower display.

from the configuration menu and press ( whichwill reveal if the display is showing rAtE or totAL.The setting can be changed by pressing the & or* button followed by the ) button to enter theselection and return to the configuration menu.

This function turns the lower display on or off. Whenturned off, the BA364NG will only have one eight digitdisplay which may be configured in the di5P-1

function to show the total count or rate.

To check the setting for the lower display, selectdi5P-2 from the configuration menu and press( that will reveal if the lower display is on or oFF.The setting may be changed by pressing the & or* button followed by the ) button to enter theselection and return to the configuration menu.

6.16 Position of the decimal points: dP

The upper and lower displays have eight and sixdigits respectively. This function enables the positionof the decimal point in both displays to beindependently positioned as shown below.

The & button moves the position ofthe decimal point to the left and the * button movesthe decimal point position to the right.

When the decimal point in the upper display has beenpositioned pressing the ( button will transfer controlto the lower display variable, but it will be shown andannunciated on the larger upper display. The positionof the decimal point may be positioned in the sameway by operating the & and * push buttons. Whenboth decimal points are positioned as required, enterthe settings and return to the configuration menu byoperating the ) button.

Note:Adjustment of a decimal point position willdisable the following outputs which must be re-enabled after the adjustment is complete:

If just the total number of input pulses isrequired, 5CALE . t should be set to 1.0. The totaldisplay is independent of the rate display.

To check or change the total scale factor select5CALE . t from the configuration menu and press (which will reveal the existing value with one digitflashing. 6.19 Timebase: t-bA5E

The timebase multiplies the rate display by 1, 60 or3,600 depending upon whether the BA364NGCounter is required to display rate per second, perminute or per hour. See Fig 8.

To check or change the timebase, select t-bA5E fromthe configuration menu and press ( which willreveal the current setting. Pressing the & or *button will scroll through the three options:

tb-1 for pulses / secondtb-60 for pulses / minute

tb-3600 for pulses / hour

When the required multiplier is displayed press ) toreturn to the t-bA5E prompt in the configurationmenu.

6.20 Display filter: FiLtEr

The digital display filter has two independentadjustable parameters enabling the rate displayresponse to be tailored for optimum performance.The filter parameters are controlled by a two digitnumber. The first digit defines the amount of filteringapplied to the display as shown below.

By careful adjustment of the two parameters astable display with an acceptable input stepresponse can be obtained for most applications.

During commissioning it is recommend that initiallythe second digit is set to 0 (off) and the first digit isadjusted to provide acceptable rate displaystability. The second digit should then be increaseduntil the selected step size is greater than thenoise on the display signal, at which setting therate display will become stable. These will be theoptimum filter parameters for acceptable ratedisplay stability and a fast response to a large ratesignal change.

To check or change the filter select FiLtEr in theconfiguration menu and press ( which will revealthe current settings with the first digit flashing.Pressing the & or * button will adjust theflashing digit and ( will transfer control to thesecond digit. While making adjustments thefiltered rate display is shown on the lower displayso that stability can be assessed while adjustmentsare being made. When set as required, press the) button to enter the revised parameters andreturn to the FiLtEr prompt in the configurationmenu.

6.21 Direction of count: uP or dn

This function defines whether input pulses incrementor decrement the total display. i.e. whether Input A isan up-counter or a down counter.

When configured as a down-counter with a non-zeronumber entered for the reset value CLr VAL, theBA364NG will count down from the re-set value tozero.

To check or change the count direction select uP or dn

from the configuration menu and press ( which willreveal the present setting. uP indicates that theinstrument is an up-counter and dn that it is a downcounter. Pressing the & or * buttons will togglethe instrument between the two settings. When setas required, press the ) button to enter the settingand return to the configuration menu.

Note:The Count function described in section 6.13also affects the direction in which the BA364NGcounts.

6.22 Reset value: CLr VAL

This function defines the value to which the totaldisplay is reset when the local or remote reset areoperated. This allows the BA364NG to be used as apre-set down counter.

When the instrument is used as an up-counter, CLr

VAL is normally set to zero.

To check or change the reset value select CLr VAL

from the configuration menu and press ( which willreveal the current setting with one digit flashing. Theflashing digit may be adjusted by pressing the & or* button. When this digit is correct, pressing ( willtransfer control to the next digit.

When all the digits have been adjusted press the )button to enter the revised number and return to theconfiguration menu.

6.23 Local reset: LoC CLr

The Local reset function contains two sub-functionsClr tot and Clr Gtot which when enabled allow thetotal display and grand total to be reset via theinstrument front panel push buttons while theBA364NG Counter is in the display mode.

6.24 Local total reset: Clr tot

Clr tot is a sub-menu in the LoC CLr function. Whenactivated it allows an operator to reset the totaldisplay to the reset value [see section 6.22] while theBA364NG Counter is in the display mode byoperating the & and * push buttons simultaneouslyfor more than three seconds.

To check or change the setting select LoC CLr inthe configuration menu and press ( which willreveal the Clr tot prompt, operating ( again willshow if the local total reset is on or oFF. If set asrequired operate the ) button twice to return tothe configuration menu, or the & or * button tochange the setting followed by the ) button twiceto enter the change and return to the LoC CLr

prompt in the configuration menu.

Note:The total display may also be remotely resetto the reset value by connecting terminalsRS1 and RS2 together for more than onesecond. See sections 3.7 and 4.8 of thismanual.

6.25 Local grand total reset: Clr Gtot

The grand total is a separate sixteen digit counterwhich is incremented or decremented in parallelwith the total display, but is not reset when the totaldisplay is reset. The grand total may be viewed inthe display mode in two eight digit sections asdescribed in section 2.2 of this manual.

Clr Gtot is a sub-menu in the LoC CLr functionwhich when activated allows the operator to resetthe grand total display to zero from the displaymode by operating the ) and * pushbuttons simultaneously for more than ten seconds.

To check or change the setting select LoC CLr inthe configuration menu and press ( which willreveal Clr tot. Using the & or * button toselect Clr Gtot and press ( which will show iflocal grand total reset is on or oFF. If set asrequired operate the ) button twice to return tothe configuration menu, or the & or * button tochange the setting followed by the ) button twiceto enter the change and return to the LoC CLr

prompt in the configuration menu.

Note: Once reset, the grand total can not berecovered.

6.26 Reset grand total from configurationmenu: Clr Gtot

The grand total is a separate sixteen digit counterwhich is incremented or decremented in parallelwith the total display, but is not reset when the totaldisplay is reset. The grand total may be viewed inthe display mode in two eight digit sections asdescribed in section 2.2 of this manual.

To zero the grand total from within theconfiguration menu select CLr Gtot and press (which will cause the instrument to display Clr . no

6.27 Security code: CodE

Access to the instrument configuration menu may beprotected by a four digit security code which must beentered to gain access. New instruments areconfigured with the default security code 0000 whichallows unrestricted access to all configurationfunctions.

To enter a new security code select CodE from theconfiguration menu and press ( which will cause theBA364NG Counter to display 0000 with one digitflashing. The flashing digit may be adjusted using the& and * push buttons, when set as requiredoperating the ( button will transfer control to thenext digit. When all the digits have been adjustedpress ) to return to the CodE prompt. The revisedsecurity code will be activated when the BA364NGCounter is returned to the display mode.

Please contact BEKA associates sales department ifthe security code is lost.

6.28 Reset configuration to factory defaults r5Et dEF

This function returns the BA364NG Counter to thefactory defaults shown in section 6.0. To preventaccidental use the request must be confirmed byentering 5urE before the configuration change willbe executed.

Select r5Et dEF from the configuration menu andpress (. the instrument will display 0000 with thefirst digit flashing. To confirm the instruction toreset all the configuration functions to factorydefaults 5urE must be entered. Using the & or* button set the first flashing digit to 5 and press( to transfer control to the second digit whichshould be set to u. When 5urE has been enteredpressing the ) button will reset all theconfiguration functions to the factory defaultsettings and zero both the total display and thegrand total. While resetting the BA364NG Counterwill display - - - - - - - - before automaticallyreturning to the display mode when the operation iscomplete.

6.29 Display overflowThe BA364NG Counter total has a maximumdisplay range of -9999999 to 99999999 whenshown on the eight digit upper display. If thisrange is exceeded the display will be as shownbelow with all of the decimal points flashing:

When the total is shown on the lower six digitdisplay the maximum display range is -99999 to999999.

When a total overflow occurs the actual total maybe obtained from the instrument's grand totaldisplay which has sixteen digits - see 2.2.

To prevent future total display overflows occurringthe total scale factor 5CALE . t and the position ofthe decimal point in the total display dP should bereviewed.

7. Pulse outputThe BA364NG Counter has an opto-isolated solidstate pulse output. The output is an open collectorhaving the following electrical parameters:

Ron = 60 + 3VRoff = 1MImax = 10mA

The output pulse may be a duplicate of Input A orInput b for re-transmission applications, or it may bederived from the total display. When derived from thetotal display the output pulse frequency may bedivided and the output pulse width defined.

The retransmitted RTx annunciator on the instrumentdisplay shows the status of the retransmitted pulseoutput. Annunciator activation depends upon thesetting of 5ource in the pulse output configurationmenu.

7.1 Ex nA certificationThe pulse output is a separate opto-isolated Ex nAcircuit with the following input safety parameters:

Ui = 30V dcIi = 100mA

This allows the pulse output to be connected to anydc circuit providing that in normal operation themaximum supply voltage is not greater than 30V dc.

Providing the BA364NG Counter is correctly installedin Zone 2, the pulse output may be directly connectedto any suitably protected equipment located in Zone 1or 2 of a hazardous area, or to equipment located in asafe area. The pulse output should not be directlyconnected to intrinsically safe equipment.

Fig 11 shows a BA364NG Counter mounted in Zone 2retransmitting a pulse to the safe area. The currentpulse flows through R1 resulting in a voltage pulseoutput with an amplitude of about 20V.

To comply with the requirements ofEN 60079-14 Electrical installations design, selectionand erection, each of the wires entering thehazardous area should be individually fused andcontain a means of isolation. These two requirementsmay be satisfied by installing DIN rail mountedterminals incorporating a fuse which can easily beremoved as shown in Fig 2 to provide isolation. Clearidentification of, and easy access to the means ofisolation is essential for their effective use. It is also

necessary to ensure that the maintenanceprocedure makes sure that unauthorised re-closureof the switches does not occur. It is not considerednecessary to have a means of isolation or electricalprotection for cable screens.

For some application Ex nA instrumentationenergised by a current limited power supply orinstrument that can be switched off, is oftenconsidered adequate and to comply with therequirements of the standard.

7.2 System designThe Counter’s pulse output is a passive circuit i.e.not powered, but it is totally isolated from all otherCounter circuits. Subject to complying with Ex nAinterconnection requirements, the terminals P1 andP2 may be connected to any other instrument withan open collector pulse input.

Fig 11 shows how to produce a voltage pulse in thesafe area that could be used to drive a safe areacounter. The positive terminal of the pulse outputcircuit P1 is connected to the Counter’s positivesupply terminal 1. When an output pulse occursand the open collector output ‘closes’, P2 isconnected to P1 and the pulse current flowsthrough resistor R1 in the safe area. The currentflowing in the circuit is determined by R1 whichshould be chosen to limit the pulse output currentto less than 10mA. For a 24V supply R1 should begreater than 2,200Ω.

7.3 ConfigurationThe pulse output is configured via the PuL5E oP

sub-menu in the configuration menu as shown inFig 12.

This sub-menu allows the source of the output pulseto be selected. For re-transmission applications theoutput pulse may be a synchronous duplicate of thepulse at Input A or at Input b by selecting dirECt A ordirECt b in the 5ourCE sub-function.Selecting 5CALEd derives the output pulse from thetotal display and introduces two additional functions,diVidE and durAtion to the sub-menu allowing theoutput pulse frequency to be divided and the outputpulse width (duration) to be defined.

If the diVidE and durAtion functions are configuredsuch that the output pulse frequency with thespecified pulse width can not be output in real time,the number of pulses will be stored and transmitted atthe maximum possible speed.

When the total display is reset to zero or the powersupply to the BA364NG Counter is disconnected orturned off, any stored pulses will not be retained.

7.4 Access Pulse output sub-menu: PuL5E oP

Using the & or * push button scroll through theCounters configuration menu until PuL5E . oP isdisplayed, pressing ( will then access the pulseoutput sub-menu which is shown in Fig 12.

7.5 Enable pulse output: EnbL

This function allows the pulse output to be disabledor enabled without altering any of the pulse outputparameters. 8. CONFIGURATION EXAMPLEA BA364NG Counter is required to display theposition and speed, including direction, of a cablewhich is sensed by two proximity detectors mountedon a wheel with a circumference of 1m over which thecable runs. The sensors, which produce fifteenpulses per revolution, are positioned so their outputsare electrically 90° apart. The BA364NG is requiredto display the position of the cable relative to astarting point in metres with a resolution of 0.1m, andto show speed of the cable in metres per second witha resolution of 1m. The total display (position) is tobe resettable by an external contact, not from theBA364NG Counter front panel. Similarly the grandtotal is not to be resettable from the BA364NGCounter front panel. To prevent tampering theinstrument configuration menu is to be protected bysecurity code 1209.

The BA364NG may be configured on-site withoutdisconnection from the power supply or from the twoproximity detectors.

If after accessing the configuration menu the intervalbetween operating any front panel push buttonexceeds one minute the BA364NG will automaticallyreturn to the display mode and any configurationchanges will not be stored in permanent memory.When making multiple changes it is therefore sensibleto occasionally return to the display mode to save thechanges that have already been made.

Step 1 Enter the configuration menuPut the BA364NG Counter in theconfiguration mode by simultaneouslypressing ( and ) push buttons.Assuming a security code has not alreadybeen entered the instrument will respondby displaying inPut-A which is the firstparameter in the configuration menu.See Fig 9.

Step 2 Select the type of inputsWith InPut-A displayed; press ( toreveal the existing setting. Using the& or * button select Pr . dEt, the inputfor a 2-wire proximity detector, and thenreturn to the inPut-A prompt in theconfiguration menu by pressing ).

Step 3 Select input count modeThe two proximity detectors arepositioned so their outputs areelectrically 90° apart. From thisinformation, in the quadrature inputmode the BA364NG Counter can sensethe direction and angular movement ofthe wheel to which the proximitydetectors are attached. Hence, therelative position of the cable can bedisplayed by the counter.

Select Count from the configurationmenu and press (. Using the & or* button select A rEL b the quadraturefunction and press ) to return to the‘Count’ prompt in the configurationmenu.

Step 4 Define function of upper displayIn the example the cable position (totaldisplay) is required on the eight digitupper display.Select dI5P-1 from the configurationmenu and press ( which will reveal ifthe upper display is showing rAtE ortotAL. Using the & or * buttonselect totAL followed by the ) buttonto enter the selection and return to theconfiguration menu.

Step 9 Set the display timebaseIn this example the rate display (speed) isrequired in metres per second.Select t-bA5E from the configurationmenu and press ( to reveal the currentsetting. Using the & or * button scrollthrough the three options and selecttb-01. Return to the t-bA5E prompt inthe configuration menu by pressing ).

Step 10 Adjust the rate display filter The rate display filter parametersshould be adjusted experimentally afterinstallation to provide a stable ratedisplay with an acceptable stepresponse.

During commissioning it isrecommended that initially the seconddigit of the rate parameters is set to 0(step response off) and the first digit(amount of filtering) is adjusted toprovide acceptable rate display stability.The second digit should then beincreased until acceptable rate displaystability is once again achieved.

To adjust the filter parameters selectFiLtEr from the main menu and press( to reveal the current setting. Thefirst digit will be flashing and may beadjusted using the & or * button.The ( button will transfer control tothe second digit. When both are set asrequired, return to the FiLtEr prompt inthe main menu by pressing ).

Note: While adjusting the filter, the rate isshown on the lower display so thatstability can be assessed.

Step 11 Direction of countIn this application the direction of countwill determine whether a cablemovement is shown as a positive ornegative position and rate. If input Aoccurs before input b, a positive displaywill result when the BA364NG isconfigured to count up.

Select uP or dn from the main menuand press ( to reveal the existingsetting. Using the & or * buttonselect uP followed by ) to enter theselection and return to the configurationmenu.

Using the &or * button toggle the display to oFF andpress ) to return to the Clr tot promptfrom which Clr Gtot can be selected bypressing the & or * button. Turn thisfunction off in exactly the same way beforereturning to the configuration menu bypressing the ) button twice.

Step 13 Define the security codeDefining an access security code preventsunauthorised access to the configurationmenu. Select CodE in the configurationmenu and press ( which will reveal theexisting security code with the first digitflashing. Using the & and * buttonsenter the new code 1209 digit by digit.The ( button transfers control betweendigits. When the new code has beenentered, press ) to return to theconfiguration menu.

Step 14 Return to the display modeFollowing completion of configuration,return the BA364NG to the display modeby pressing ). The instrument willdisplay dAtA followed by 5AVE while theconfiguration changes are stored inpermanent memory.

10. ACCESSORIES

10.1 Units of measurement & instrumentidentification.

New BA364NG Counters are supplied with a printedscale card showing the units of measurement and taginformation specified when the instrument wasordered. If this information was not supplied a blankscale card will be fitted which can easily be markedwith a dry transfer or a permanent marker on-site.

Custom printed scale cards are available asaccessories and may be easily fitted as shown insection 5.4 of this manual.

The BA364NG can also be supplied with a blank orcustom laser engraved stainless steel legend plate -see Fig 7. The plate, which after installation is visiblefrom the front of the instrument, is supplied loose withtwo fixing screws for securing it to the rear of theinstrument's back-box. This plate can typicallyaccommodate:

10.2 BacklightThe BA364NG Counter can be supplied with a factoryfitted backlight that produces green illuminationenhancing display contrast and enabling it to be readat night or in poor lighting conditions. 10.3 AlarmsThe BA364NG Counter can be supplied withfactory fitted dual alarms. Each may beindependently configured as a rate display or totaldisplay, high or low alarm. with a normally open, ora normally closed solid state output.

Configurable functions for each alarm includeadjustable setpoint, alarm delay time and alarmsilence time. Hysteresis may be applied to ratealarms.

WARNINGThese alarm outputs should not be usedfor critical safety applications such as ashut down system.

When the BA364NG power supply is turned off ordisconnected, alarm outputs will open irrespectiveof whether normally open or normally closedoutputs have been selected. When designing asystem an open output should therefore be chosenfor the alarm condition.

Alarm annunciators on the instrument displayindicate the status of each alarm. If an alarm delayor silence time has been selected the annunciatorwill flash during the delay or silence period.

The BA364NG internal counters are up-dated andcompared with the alarm setpoint twice persecond, irrespective of the display update timeselected. This may result in an alarm beingdelayed for up to half a second after the rate ortotal has exceeded the setpoint.

10.3.1 Solid state output Each alarm has a galvanically isolated single polesolid state switch output as shown in Fig 14. Theoutputs are polarised and current will only flow inone direction. Terminals A1 and A3 should beconnected to the positive side of the supply.

10.3.2 Ex nA certificationEach alarm output is a separate galvanically isolatedEx nA circuit with the following input parameters:

Ui = 30V dcIi = 200mA

This allows each alarm output to switch any dc circuitproviding that in normal operation the maximumsupply voltage is not greater than 30V dc and theswitched current is not greater than 200mA. Providing that the BA364NG Counter is correctlyinstalled in Zone 2 the two alarm outputs may be usedto switch suitably protected equipment located inZone 1 or 2 of a hazardous area, or equipmentlocated in a safe area.

Fig 14 shows an application in which a BA364NGCounter mounted in Zone 2 is displaying the outputfrom a Flameproof switch contact located in Zone 1.Alarm 1 is switching an Ex e sounder in Zone 1 andalarm 2 is switching a sounder located in the safearea.

To comply with the requirements of EN 60079-14Electrical installations design, selection and erection,each of the wires entering the hazardous area shouldbe individually fused and contain a means of isolation.These two requirements are frequently satisfied byusing fuse holders with easily removable fuses andremoving the fuses to achieve isolation. This is asatisfactory method at the low voltages and currentscommon in instrumentation systems. Clearidentification of, and easy access to the means ofisolation is essential for their effective use. It is alsonecessary to ensure that the maintenance procedure

makes sure that unauthorised re-closure of theswitches does not occur. It is not considerednecessary to have a means of isolation or electricalprotection for the screen. Fig 2 illustrates anexample of this type of fused terminal block.

For some applications Ex nA instrumentationenergised by a current limited power supply orinstrument that can be switched off, is oftenconsidered adequate and to comply with therequirements of the standard.

10.3.3 Summary of configuration functionsWhen a BA364NG Counter is supplied with alarmsthe Counter configuration menu is extended asshown in Fig 15. Each alarm may be configuredto operate on the rate or total display.

For simplicity Fig 15 only shows the configurablefunctions on the rate option of alarm AL1, the totaloption is identical except that the total alarms cannot have hysteresis. Configuration of alarm AL2is identical to alarm AL1.

The following table summarises each of the alarmconfiguration functions and includes a crossreference to more detailed information. Again onlythe functions on alarm AL1 are listed.

10.3.5 Type of alarm: tYPE

Alarm 1 and Alarm 2 are totally independent, bothmay be rate or total alarms, or one may beconditioned for rate and the other for total. Using the & or * push button select tYPE fromthe selected alarm sub-menu and press ( tocheck or change the function. The & or * pushbutton will toggle the selection between rAtE andtotAL, when set as required press the ) button toreturn to the alarm sub-menu.

Note: When tYPE is changed, the alarmconfiguration is automatically reset to thedefault values and the alarm is disabled. Itmust therefore be reconfigured before use.

10.3.6 Setpoint adjustment: 5P1x & 5P2xThe rate alarm setpoints SP1r and SP2r may bepositioned anywhere between 000000 and 999999,and the total alarm setpoint SP1t and SP2t anywherebetween 00000000 and 99999999.

All the setpoints are adjusted in the same way, forexample, to adjust the setpoint of Alarm 1 which hasbeen configured to operate on the rate display.Using the & or * push button select 5P1r in theAL1 sub-menu and press ( which will reveal theexisting setpoint with one digit flashing. The requiredsetpoint can be entered using the & or * pushbutton to adjust the flashing digit and the ( button totransfer control to the next digit. When set asrequired press ) to enter the value and return to the5P1r prompt in the alarm 1 sub-menu.

10.3.7 Alarm function: Hi. Lo

Alarm 1 and Alarm 2 are totally independent, bothmay be Hi or Lo, or one may be conditioned as a Hialarm and the other as a Lo alarm. Using the & or * push button select Hi. Lo from theselected alarm sub-menu and press ( to check orchange the function. The & or * push button willtoggle the alarm function between Hi and Lo, whenset as required, press the ) button to return to theHi. Lo prompt in the alarm sub-menu.

10.3.8 Alarm output status: no . nC

Each single pole alarm output may be open or closedin the non-alarm condition. When the BA364NGpower supply is turned off or disconnected, the alarmoutput(s) will open irrespective of whether normallyopen or normally closed outputs have been selected.Therefore, when designing an alarm system normallyclosed nc should be selected so that the output openswhen an alarm occurs or if the power supply fails.

Using the & or * push button select no . nC from theselected alarm sub-menu and press ( to check orchange the function. The & or * push button willtoggle the contact status between no and nC, whenset as required, press the ) button to return to theno . nC prompt in the alarm sub-menu

10.3.9 Hysteresis: H5tr

Hysteresis is only available on rate alarms so theH5tr function only appears in the configuration sub-menu when alarm tYPE has been set to rAtE. Duringconfiguration hysteresis is shown in the units of ratepreviously configured for the rate display.

Using the & or * push button select H5tr in theselected alarm sub-menu and press ( which willreveal the existing hysteresis with one digit flashing.The required hysteresis can be entered using the &or * push button to adjust the flashing digit and the( button to transfer control to the next digit. When

set as required press ) to enter the value andreturn to the H5tr prompt in the alarm sub-menu.

e.g. A BA364NG Counter configured to display arate of 0 to 5000, with a high alarm set at 4000 andhysteresis of 100 will perform as follows:

High alarm will be activated when rateequals or exceeds 4000, but will not resetuntil the rate falls below 3900.

10.3.10 Alarm delay: dELA

This function enables activation of the alarm outputto be delayed for a fixed time following the alarmcondition occurring. The delay can be set in 1second increments up to 3600 seconds. If a delayis not required zero should be entered.

To adjust the delay select dELA using the & or *push button in the selected alarm sub-menu andpress ( which will reveal the existing delay timein seconds with one digit flashing. The requireddelay time can be entered using the & or *push button to adjust the flashing digit and the( button to transfer control to the next digit.When set as required press ) to enter the valueand return to the dELA prompt in the alarm sub-menu.

The alarm annunciator will start flashingimmediately an alarm condition occurs and willcontinue for the delay time, after which the alarmoutput will be activated and the alarm annunciatorwill be permanently activated.

10.3.11 Alarm silence time: 5IL

The alarm silence function is primarily intended foruse in small installations where the alarm outputdirectly operates an annunciator such as asounder. When the alarm silence time is set to anyfigure other than zero, the ( push buttonbecomes an alarm accept button.

After an alarm has occurred, operating the( button will cause the alarm output to revert tothe non-alarm condition for the alarm silence time.When an alarm is silenced the alarm annunciatorwill flash until the silence time expires.

To adjust the alarm silence time select 5iL usingthe & or * push button in the selected alarmsub-menu and press ( which will reveal theexisting alarm silence time in seconds with onedigit flashing. The required silence time can beentered using the & or * push button to adjustthe flashing digit and the ( button to transfercontrol to the next digit. When set as requiredpress ) to enter the value and return to the 5iL

prompt in the alarm sub-menu.

10.3.12 Flash display when alarm occurs:FL5H

In addition to the two alarm annunciators on the lefthand side of the BA364NG Counter display whichshow the status of both alarms, this function providesan even more conspicuous indication that an alarmhas occurred.

When enabled, this function alternates the rate ortotal display between the numerical value and thealarm identification AL1 or AL2 when an alarm occurs.

Using the & or * push button select FL5H from theselected alarm sub-menu and press ( to check orchange the function. The & or * push button willtoggle the function between oFF and on, when set asrequired, press the ) button to return to the FL5H

prompt in the alarm sub-menu.

10.3.13 Access Setpoint: AC5P

This function activates a separate menu that providesdirect access to the alarm setpoints from the displaymode by simultaneously operating the ( and *buttons. An operator can therefore adjust the alarmsetpoints without having access to the configurationand alarm sub-menus. Protection againstunauthorised or accidental adjustment is provided bya separate security access code.

Using the & or * push button select AC5P from theconfiguration menu and press ( to reach the enablefunction EnbL. Pressing ( will reveal the existingsetting which can be toggled between on and oFF bypressing the & or * push button. When set asrequired, press the ) button to return to the EnbL

prompt from which a separate security access codecan be entered using the ACCd function which can beselected using the & or * push button.

To enter a new security code select ACCd from thesub-menu and press ( which will cause theBA364NG Counter to display 0000 with one digitflashing. The flashing digit may be adjusted using the& or * push button, when set as required operatingthe ( button will transfer control to the next digit.When all the digits have been adjusted press ) toreturn to the ACCd prompt. The revised security codewill be activated when the BA364NG Counter isreturned to the display mode. Default securityaccess code 0000 will disable the security codeallowing direct access to the setpoints in the displaymode by pressing the ( and * buttonssimultaneously.

Please contact BEKA associates sales department ifthe security code is lost.

10.3.14 Adjusting alarm setpoints from the display modeAccess to the two alarm setpoints from theBA364NG Counter’s display mode is obtained byoperating the ( and * push buttonssimultaneously as shown in Fig 16. If the setpointsare not protected by a security code the alarmsetpoint prompt 5P1r or 5P1t will be displayeddepending upon whether a rate or total alarm hasbeen configured. If the setpoints are protected bya security code, CodE will be displayed first.Pressing ( again will allow the alarm setpointsecurity code to be entered digit by digit using the& and * buttons to adjust the flashing digit andthe ( push button to move control to the nextdigit. If the correct code is entered pressing )will then cause alarm setpoint prompt 5P1x to bedisplayed. If an incorrect security code is entered,or a button is not pressed within ten seconds, theinstrument will automatically return to the displaymode.

Once within the menu pressing the & or *buttons will toggle the display between the twoalarm setpoint prompts 5P1x and 5P2x.

When the required setpointhas been entered, pressing ) will return the displayto the 5P1x or 5P2x prompt from which the othersetpoint may be selected, or the instrument may bereturned to the display mode by pressing ) again.

10.4 4/20mA output The BA364NG Counter can be supplied with anoptional factory fitted galvanically isolated 4/20mAoutput which may be configured to represent the rateor total display.

10.4.1 Ex nA certificationThe optional 4/20mA output is a separate galvanicallyisolated Ex nA circuit with the following inputparameters:

Ui = 30V dc

This allows the 4/20mA output to be connected to anydc circuit providing that in normal operation themaximum supply voltage is not greater than 30V dc.

Providing that the BA364NG Counter is correctlyinstalled in Zone 2 the 4/20mA current output may beused to transmit to suitably protected equipmentlocated in Zone 1 or 2 of a hazardous area, or toequipment located in a safe area.

Fig 17 shows a typical application in which a Zone 2mounted BA337NE Counter is transmitting a 4/20mAcurrent to the safe area.

To comply with the requirements of EN 60079-14Electrical installations design, selection and erection,each of the wires entering the hazardous area shouldbe individually fused and contain a means of isolation.These two requirements may be satisfied by installingDIN rail mounted terminals incorporating a fuse whichcan easily be opened as shown in Fig 2 to provideisolation. Clear identification of, and easy access tothe means of isolation is essential for their effectiveuse. It is also necessary to ensure that themaintenance procedure makes sure that unauthorisedre-closure of the switches does not occur. It is notconsidered necessary to have a means of isolation orelectrical protection for cable screens.

For some applications Ex nA instrumentationenergised by a current limited power supply orinstrument that can be switched off, is oftenconsidered adequate and to comply with therequirements of the standard.

10.4.2 Configuration and calibrationWhen a BA364NG Counter is supplied with anoptional 4/20mA output the configuration menu isextended as shown in Fig 18. The 4/20mA outputsub-menu is accessed via the 4-20 oP function.

The 4/20mA output sub-menu allows the 4/20mAoutput to be controlled by the rate or the totaldisplay.

Access the BA364NG Counter configuration menu asdescribed in section 6.2. Using the & and * pushbuttons scroll though the menu until 4-20 oP isdisplayed, pressing ( will then access the 4/20mAoutput sub-menu which is shown in Fig 18.

10.4.4 Enable 4/20mA output: EnbL

This function allows the 4/20mA output to be disabledor enabled without altering any of the 4/20mA outputparameters. Using the & or * push button selectEnbL in the 4-20 oP sub-menu and press ( to revealthe existing setting on or oFF. The function can bechanged by pressing the & or * push buttonfollowed by the ) button to return to EnbL prompt.

Note: When the 4/20mA output is disabled byselecting oFF, the output is a constant3.5mA irrespective of the instrument display.

10.4.5 Select rate or total source: 4-20tYPE

The 4/20mA output current can represent theBA364NG Counter’s rate or total display and thismust be defined before any other 4/20mA currentoutput functions are configured.

Using the & or * push button select 4-20tYPE inthe 4/20mA output sub-menu and press ( to revealthe existing setting totAL or rAtE. The function canbe changed by pressing the & or * push buttonfollowed by the ) button to return to 4-20tYPE

prompt.

Note: If the controlling source of the 4/20mAoutput is changed i.e. from rate to total, the4/20mA output will be disabled and theoutput will be a constant 3.5mA irrespectiveof the instrument display.The 4/20mA output must always be re-enabled and reconfigured following thecontrolling source being changed.

10.4.6 Display which corresponds to 4mA output: 4 . 000

The BA364NG Counter display which corresponds toa 4.000mA output current is defined by this function.Using the & or * push button select 4 . 000 in the4/20mA output sub-menu and press ( to reveal theexisting rate or total display with one digit flashing.The required display can be entered using the& or * push button to adjust the flashing digit andthe ( button to transfer control to the next digit.When set as required press ) to enter the value andreturn to the 4 . 000 prompt in the 4/20mA output sub-menu.

10.4.7 Display which corresponds to 20mA output: 20.000

The BA364NG Counter display which correspondsto 20.000mA output current is defined by thisfunction. Using the & or * push button select20 . 000 in the 4/20mA output sub-menu and press(. to reveal the existing rate or total display withone digit flashing. The required display can beentered using the & or * push button to adjustthe flashing digit and the ( button to transfercontrol to the next digit. When set as requiredpress ) to enter the value and return to the 20

Note: If the BA364NG Counter and the 4/20mAcurrent sink output are powered fromseparate supplies, the 4/20mA outputcurrent will continue to flow when theBA364NG Counter supply fails or isturned off. Powering both from acommon supply eliminates this effect.

A1.0 ATEX dust certificationIn addition to ATEX Ex nA certification permittinginstallation in explosive gas atmospheres, which isdescribed in the main section of this instructionmanual, the BA364NG Counter has ATEX Ex tc dustignition protection by enclosure certification permittinginstallation in combustible dust atmospheres. Thefront panel push button switches are non incendiveand have been certified intrinsically safe Ex ic withoutthe need for Zener barriers or galvanic isolators.

This appendix describes ATEX installations inexplosive dust atmospheres conforming withEN 60079-14 Electrical installations design, selectionand erection. When designing systems for installationoutside the UK the local Code of Practice should beconsulted.

The Counter’s Ex tc dust input and output safetyparameters are identical to the Ex nA gas parameters,therefore all the electrical circuits shown in the mainsection of this manual may also be used for Ex tc dustapplications.

The certificate states that It isnot necessary to power the instrument froman intrinsically safe interface, such as acertified shunt diode safety barrier or agalvanic isolator to comply with thisrequirement.

A1.3 MaintenanceThe IEC guidance on maintenance proceduresEN 60079-17 permits live maintenance in Zone 22if a risk analysis demonstrates that this does notintroduce an unacceptable risk. The removal ofcovers [opening of Ex tc enclosure] is permitted ifthis can be done without contaminating the interiorof the enclosure and instrument with dust ormoisture. Some end-users may prefer not topermit live maintenance to minimise risk.

ENSURE PLANT SAFETY BEFORESTARTING MAINTENANCE

Live maintenance within the hazardousarea should only be performed when it ispermitted by risk analysis or when thereis no risk of a flammable atmospherebeing present.

The instrument assembly should only be removedfrom the enclosure back-box when dust can notenter the instrument enclosure. Before replacingthe instrument assembly the sealing gasket shouldbe inspected to ensure that it is undamaged andfree from foreign bodies.

Inspection of the Counters mechanical conditionand removal of accumulated dust from the front ofthe instrument and the outside of the enclosureshould be regularly performed. The intervalbetween inspections depends upon environmentalconditions. Removal of flammable dust should beperformed with care to avoid creating a dust cloud.

A2.2 InstallationThe IECEx and ATEX certificates specify identicalsafety parameters and installation requirements forboth gas and dust approvals as defined byIEC 60079-14. The ATEX installation requirementsspecified in the main section and Appendix 1 of thismanual may therefore be used for IECEx installations,but the local code of practice should also beconsulted.
