THE PROBLEMS WITH MODERN FUEL

Have you noticed when you have went to the petrol station latterly that the fuel pumps all have a number such as E90 or E95 ? This means that the petrol you are purchasing is a mixture of ethanol and petrol when it comes out of the pump. It may sound totally harmless however Ethanol can have a devastating effect on the performance and the reliability of your engine!

Ethanol is best described as a hydroscopic substance this means it attracts water naturally and as you will likely know water and engines don’t mix well. This property of ethanol is not best suited to being used in fuel however because Ethanol also has similar properties to petrol it has been approved by Government agencies in an attempt to reduce the amount of fossil fuels and carbon foot print using engines is having on the environment.

Not only do Ethanol blended fuels lead problem related to water they are also extremely harmful to vital rubber and plastic components in modern engines. For example all fuel pipes and seals on modern engines are produced using rubber however these parts have a moisture content to help enable them to be flexible and adapt to the shape of the components in use. However the ethanol in the fuel when around the rubber components draws the moisture (water) out of the rubber components causing them to pre-maturely crack and become brittle. This can cause failure of your engine and unexpected down time waiting for a repair to be carried out.

PHASE SEPARATION

The most common phrase you may hear in relation to fuel problems is ‘Phase Separation’ this is best thought of as the phrase to describe when water and fuel do not mix at all. Effectively you end up with a layer of water at the bottom of a fuel tank with your fuel lying on top of the layer of water. The problem you now face is that 99% of engines have the fuel pick up at the bottom of the tank where the layer of water is located; it is this design which multiplies the effect of phase separation as the water content in the fuel is taken in a greater proportion in to the engines internal components.

PROBLEMAs fuel decays it can leave deposits in the engine; causing it to run poorly, or in some cases; not at all. If your engine has been run with stale fuel it can cause excess carbon deposits to build up in the cylinder and also blockages within the carburettor.
