They say tha t a change is as good as a rest and this certainly seems t rue for Ricky Valentine. When he left Sony music t w o years ago t o sign for a small independent record \\abel , many people were predict ing we 'd heard the last f r o m him. But this is not t he case. His f i r s t 2 for Go-Go records is simply brill iant. Back from the Dead shows that Valentine is no t just a g r ea t 3 (we all knew tha t anyway) but tha t he can 4 music on a much more ambit ious level. This is n o t just a record o f Valentine and his guitar. This is Valentine, his guitar and a fu l l orchestra. Q L i t e r a t u r e in mind Read this extract f rom High Fidelity by Nick Hornby. These s ta tements are all true. Find ev idence for each one in the text. The re might be more than one thing for each statement .

1 Rob has been a DJ at the club before. 2 Rob doesn't th ink that Barry's band wi l l be good. 3 Barry and his band are very good. 4 The people in the club are not teenagers.

Rob, the owner of the music store, is working one night as DJ in a nightclub. Barry, who works in Rob's store, has a band which is going to play in public for the first time at the club.

Before the band come on, everything's bri l l iant. It used to take a bit of time to warm people up, but tonight they're 1 up for it straight away.

[And] I haven't lost any of the old magic. One sequence [of songs] has them begging for mercy. A n d then it's time for the band.

I've been told to introduce them; Barry has even written down what I 'm supposed to say: 'Ladies and gentlemen, be afraid. Be very afraid. Here comes .. . SONIC D E A T H M O N K E Y ! ' But [...] in the end I just sort of mumble the name of the group into the microphone.

They're wearing suits and skinny ties, and when they plug in there's a terrible feedback 2 whine which for a moment I fear is their opening number. But Sonic Death Monkey are no longer what they once were. They are no longer, i n fact, Sonic Death Monkey.

'We're not called Sonic Death Monkey any more,' Barry says when he gets to the mike. 'We might be on the edge of becoming the Futuristics, but we haven't decided vet. Tonight, though, we're Backbeat. One two three . . . W E L L S H A K E I T U P BABY .. . ' A n d they launch into Twist and Shout, note perfect, and everyone in the place goes mad.

A n d Barry can sing.

They play Route 66 and Long Tall Sally and Money and Do You Love Me? and they 3 encore wi th I n The Midnight Hour and La Bamba. Every song, in short, i s 4 naff and recognizable, and guaranteed to please a crowd of thirtysomethings who think that hip-hop is something their children do in music and movement classes. The crowd are so pleased, in fact, that they 5 sit out the songs I have lined up for them to get them going again after Sonic Death Monkey have frightened and confused them.

'What was all that about?' I ask Barry when he comes up to the deck, sweaty and half-cut and pleased wi th himself.

'Was that all right?'

' I t was better than what I was expecting.'
