propel us forward and raises the bar for the industry at large.”• Initiatives that make an impactIn 2017, 100 percent of the water used in the company’s main production facility in North

America was captured rainwater. Based in Piscataway, New Jersey, the facility got more than 80 percent of its energy from solar panels. Overall it achieved a 3.5 percent reduction in greenhouse gases, part of an overall 64.6 percent reduction since its baseline year of 2011. Aiming to divert 90 percent of waste produced at all facilities, Humanscale achieved the New Jersey Recycling Award from the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection and the Association of New Jer-sey Recyclers for the Piscataway location.

• Living Product ChallengeIn 2016, Humanscale was the first company to achieve full Living Product Challenge certifica-

tion, meeting the sustainability standards set by the International Living Future Institute for its Float table and Smart chair. It continues to be the only company to achieve full certification. When Humanscale began working toward the Living Product Challenge, it committed to ensur-ing the entire supply chain would be net positive in terms of water, energy use and emissions in three years, a commitment it continued to move forward in 2017.

• Material transparencyHumanscale participates in voluntary labeling programs, such as Health Product Declarations

(HPD) and Declare labels, to help customers make informed choices about products. With the be-lief products should have ingredient labels that disclose what they’re made of, like food products

gether to give the Howe Elementary School in Green Bay, Wisconsin, a makeover.

The ribbon cutting at the library was Aug. 7 with speakers Dick Resch, KI president and CEO; Mark Murphy, Green Bay Packers president; and Michelle Langenfeld, Green Bay schools superintendent.

The new space is designed to engage stu-dents, promote innovation and collabora-tion and help prepare students for their post-secondary aspirations.

“My entire life has been dedicated to supporting education — with projects just like this — to give students the means to learn and work in a space designed specifically for their learning needs,” Resch said. “It’s been a thrilling time to be in the education world as it’s changing by the second.”

Humanscale Provides Roadmap to Net Positive Manufacturing

Ɇ With sustainability as a core value from its inception, a new Corporate Social Responsibility Report (CSR) from Humanscale underscores the company’s commitment to achieving a net posi-

tive impact and lays out a corporate sustainability road map raising the bar for the manufacturing industry.

make a positive contribution to the environment,” said Humanscale Founder and CEO Bob King. “This is how nature works and is the only way we can ensure the long-term survival of our planet. Our unwavering commitment to making the office and the world a healthier place continues to

Architecture & Design Film Festival Launches 10th Season in NYC during Archtober

Ɇ The Architecture & Design Film Festival, the nation’s largest film festival devoted to architec-ture and design, is preparing to launch its 10th season with ADFF:NY in NYC.

The Oct. 16-21 festival will feature dozens of humanis-tic documentaries about creative visionaries (including Gary Hustwit’s new film about living design legend Dieter Rams), stimulating talks with filmmakers and architects and interactive installations in the festival lounge.

Founded by architect Kyle Bergman in 2009, the festival will kick off Oct. 3 with the annual Short Films Walk. The event brings crowds to the SoHo Design District for an evening of showroom hopping complete with drinks and a curated viewing of short films by ADFF. Both ADFF:NY

and SFW:NY are two must-see events during Archtober, New York City’s monthlong festival of architecture activities, programs and exhibitions in October.

Empire Office Launches Custom Millwork Division with Key Hires

Ɇ Fabricate, a new division started by Empire Office, will specialize in custom millwork solu-tions for commercial office, retail and hospitality spaces. Its work will include custom-designed and built cabinets, shelving, banquettes, stadium seating, reception desks, feature walls and areas for lounge and collaboration.

“We are seeing many clients use their workspace as a point of differentiation and a branding tool for their employees and visitors,” said Peter Gaslow, president and CEO of Empire Office, a provider of contract furniture. “Fabricate by Empire Office will help clients produce bespoke spaces and custom-built furniture pieces to align with the specific culture and brand of their or-ganization.”

To launch the division, Empire Office has hired an experienced team of professionals led by Jonathan Kessler and Stan Judovits.

Kessler, formerly an owner and principal at Workwell Partners, brings more than 16 years of industry experience, having co-founded and built the dealership from the ground up. He was instrumental in steering and growing transactional project business for the company and launch-ing the custom millwork division. As studio director at Empire Office, he will fill a similar role in overseeing the millwork division and providing service to Empire’s project-based business.

Judovits brings 34 years of experience in the industry overall, having held key positions with numerous well-known design firms, including MKDA, The Mufson Partnership and Pavlik Design Team before joining Modworxx in 2016. As senior vice president of Fabricate by Empire Office, he will be focused on business development and the overall operations of the division.

“We are excited to join Empire Office and believe this new division and its services will add great

do, the brand launched four new products with Declare labels in 2017; QuickStand Eco, Infinity, QuickStand Underdesk and Diffrient Smart. To date, 57 percent of Humanscale products carry Declare labels and HPDs. Humanscale has published a total of 16 HPDs, all of which are LEED v4 compliant. These labels represent Humanscale’s commitment to avoiding Red List materials and chemicals of concern, many of which are common in the furniture industry, including formalde-hyde, PVC, Chrome 6, PFC stain-resistant coatings and HFR flame retardants.

In 2017 Sustainability Officer Jane Abernethy was elected to the HPD Collaborative board of directors. Humanscale has also contributed to the HPDC Technical Committee and is leading the Supplier HPD development that could benefit other manufacturers and their efforts to achieve material transparency in their supply chains. In 2017, Humanscale was one of the first manu-facturers to participate in the Health Product Declaration Collaborative’s (HPDC) third-party verification program. A longtime advocate for more stringent requirements in material transpar-ency in manufacturing, Humanscale sees the program as an important step in that direction. It submitted the Diffrient Smart chair for third-party evaluation, which was verified and accepted by the HPDC.

• Sustainability ChampionsIn 2017, Humanscale implemented the Sustainability Champions program. Ten employees from

different offices and with various roles and tenures at the company signed up to run the Help Our Mother Earth program. Sustainability Champions enhance sustainable culture across company offices and locations, implementing practices to reduce waste, source sustainable resources and inform and engage other employees.

“The vision to go beyond sustainability and have a net positive impact was set at the highest level, but it has been wholeheartedly embraced throughout the organization,” Abernethy said. “From a product engineer who conscientiously chooses healthy materials, to an office manager who reminds her team members about recycling, to an operations manager who chooses LED lighting, the impact we have as a company is the sum of the impact of our team members.”

Since 2008, Humanscale has worked with the World Wildlife Fund to support wildlife conserva-tion and research in Cambodia. In 2017, it helped fund studies on the globally endangered Elds deer and green peafowl, plus environmental DNA (eDNA) surveys. These eDNA surveys allow re-searchers to determine whether a species is present in a habitat. Humanscale also funded surveys on leopards.
