Dear friends,
an ancient wisdom says that knowledge is the light on our journey through our lifetime. Today, standing on the threshold of the development of knowledge based economy, validity of this wisdom is doubling. Diff erent spheres of our society’s life acquired new dimensions on the accession of Slovakia to the European Union. New opportunities and challenges but also new problems emerged. Knowledge will belong among the most precious attributes of the success and not only within economy.
Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava endeavours to contribute to the deepening of knowledge. It is done via extraction of knowledge from science and its subsequent dissemination into education, but also by the means of support devoted to utilisation of knowledge in the direct co-operation with industry. In this way the old heritage of university’s predecessors – academicians from the Mining Academy in Banská Štiavnica, which was the fi rst technical university of this type established in the heart of Europe, is preserved. Fundamentals of classical technical fi elds of study, economic and natural sciences, agricultural and forestry fi elds of study as well as creative arts, which were established on the territory of the Mining Academy, became the base for the formation of new independent universities.
Under present day conditions, our university succeeded to respond to the presence of foreign investments, development of automobile industry and invasion of up-to-date technologies. It found its refl ection in the increase of attractive study programs, in growing interest of industry and enterprises to co-operate, as well as in more exten-sive and intensive international co-operation.
At present, our ambitions are oriented to active contribution to the development of knowledge economy via results achieved in scientifi c research and education and in this way we participate in the fulfi lment of basic aims of Lisbon strategy in Slovakia.
