Gail and I were very

disappointed that we had

to cancel our annual trip

to Florida this year due

to Gail’s neck problems.

We sure missed seeing

you all. This was the

first time we have missed

the DOAI Lazy Days

rally for 14 years.

As I begin to scribble a few words to you

folks I sit here with a terrible case of the

CRUD for lack of another word. Sore and

swollen throat, difficulty in swallowing, and

I could go on but I wont. Gail has developed

a neck problem which has been diagnosed as a

bulging disc and is pinching a nerve to the arm

creating a lot of pain. The neurosurgeon

wanted her to try some physical therapy

which consists of neck

traction and isometric

exercises before getting

the knife out. That seems

to be helping. Her neck

is definitely getting long-

er. I am getting tired of

hooking up her neck trac-

tion twice a day so I

ordered her a gold neck

stretcher. Don’t you think

she looks very eloquent

with it?

We sure look forward to seeing all of you

at our spring rally to be held in Stone

Mountain, Georgia April 23-27th at the

Stone Mountain Park Campground. This

is a beautiful park and we hope all of

you will be able to attend. I want to

thank the hosts for this rally, Pat and Sue

Stanton, Bruce & Margaret Ellen, Charlie

& Elaine Harvell and Bob and Barbara

Zumwalt.

Our fall rally will be held in Lewisburg,

WV, September 24th to the 27th, at the

West Virginia State Fairgrounds hosted

by yours truly and the first lady. Early

days will be September 22nd and 23rd.

These dates have been changed as several

folks are going to the national rally in

Gillette, WY and this will give them more

time to return to Lewisburg.

I would like to welcome Hank and Sele-

ne Montgomery as new members of our

group. They are from Montevallo, Ala-

bama.

My auto generator would not recognize that I was plugged into shore power and the generator would start

to run AC. This was an item I had on my list for Fleetwood to check while we were at LazyDays. The

tech suspected a loose connection. He removed the panel inside my “bulletin board” above the driver’s

seat. Behind this panel are numerous wires and three AC controllers. (I always wondered what was back

there!)

Also back there was an electrical outlet. Lying on the shelf below it was a transformer. Plugging in the

transformer solved my problem. Bob also took some wire ties and attached the transformer to the outlet,

so that it won’t fall out while we are bouncing down the road.

I like the auto gen and use it often. It is back up power for the AC in case of a power failure at the park

keeping Savannah safe and cool. We had a power outage while I was visiting my brother in Deltona, FL

on our way home from Camp Discovery. I also use it when we are dry camping so I won’t run the batter-

ies too low. I try to remember to push the button each time I set up.

While at the Mayport Naval Air Station in Jacksonville in January, we lost “shore” power to several

circuits. After checking the obvious I called the “expert” Cason’s RV repair. Frank said to take the

cover off the front of the inverter and check the connections since this was a problem that Richard

Money had experienced. They appeared OK and were all taped. Now the inverter was functioning

properly so we still had power but when the dryer was turned on it interrupted the circuit momentarily

and the TV and Satellite receiver would go off and come back on. Of course then we had to sit and

watch the receiver “reconnect” before the programs would return. I sent Fleetwood a message and they

said that Randy, the service manager, would be at Lazydays and he would take a look at it when we

arrived. Well the technician came the first day and spent almost 40 minutes doing exactly what I had

done and what Frank had suggested. Then just before he was going to give up he “twisted” the wires in

the inverter again and shore power returned. He then unplugged the RV from the pedestal and took

each wire apart. Seems when Fleetwood connects the “stranded” wires to the solid ones they don’t al-

ways ensure that all the wires are sufficiently twisted before they put the wire nut on. Once he redid all

of the wires and taped all of them again we had no further problem. So bottom line is if you experience

a loss of power on the inverted circuits (in our case microwave, washer, dryer, TV, Satellite, and plugs

in kitchen) you might want to check these connections inside the inverter. Just remove the two screws

on the little cover and pull the wires out (might want to disconnect from power source) and un-tape and

check the wires. Make sure you tape them back up after completing this. Hopefully this will solve

your problem. As a side note I have no idea why Fleetwood would put the washer and dryer on an in-

verted circuit because who in their right mind would do laundry on battery power?

Barbara and I recently made a trip to Pensacola Beach for the wedding of a good friend’s beautiful daughter to a young and handsome Marine helicopter pilot. We stayed a couple of extra days and spent one of them at the Nation-al Naval Aviation Museum. What a find! If you have never been, be sure to put this on your bucket list. It is the world’s largest Naval Aviation museum with more than 150 restored aircraft representing Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard Aviation. It covers 350,000 square feet of enclosed exhibit space with more aircraft located out on the flight line. They also have their own IMAX theatre with three different movies showing daily. There is a small charge for each of the IMAX movies, but museum admission and everything else is free. The museum is located at NAS Pensacola, home of the Navy’s Blue Angels and just a short 15-minute drive from Pensacola Beach. All you have to do is present your drivers license at the gate for admission to the base. Although many areas are restricted, what we were able to see was absolutely beautiful: lots of live oaks, a large golf course, military cemetery, light house, RV park, and more. Here a few pictures from our visit to the museum. If you want to see more, the full set of images is posted on my Flickr page at http://www.flickr.com/photos/bzumwalt/sets/72157641305285905/.

We left our “D” at home for this trip and stayed at the Hilton, right on the beach with the rest of the wedding par-ty. However, if we knew then what we know now, we would have brought the “D” and stayed right across the street at the Pensacola Beach RV Resort. We liked Pensacola Beach so much, we spent another day scouting out RV parks for a return trip. The Pensacola Beach RV Resort is very nice and right in the middle of everything, but also very pricey, as you might expect. A more economical alternative just eight miles down the road, still on Santa Rosa Island with Pensacola Beach, is the Fort Pickens Campground. This is part of the Gulf Islands National Seashore (National Park Service) with hook-ups for 50A and water for only $26/night or $13 with a Senior Pass. We also liked the Topsail Hill Preserve State Park at Santa Rosa Beach. This is a large campground with bungalows and cabins, in addition to tent and RV camping. We like this kind of campground, because we can put our daughter’s family in one of the cabins. Full hook-ups and cable TV are $42 plus tax. Camp Gulf, down the road in Destin, is another large campground with lots of RV sites and cabins in a variety of sizes. This campground is nar-row and deep with prices ranging from low to high for those near the highway to a few premium sites right on the beach. Our favorite and the most beautiful campground is the one we will go back to first --- the St. Rosa Sound RV Resort in Navarre Beach. It is located on the Santa Rosa Sound just up from the Navarre Beach Causeway, which goes over to Santa Rosa Island. It is a very nice smaller park with 88 sites, 24 of which are waterfront. All sites are concrete with full hook-ups, including cable TV and Wi-Fi. One or more of these campgrounds would be a good site for a future BRD rally. The Pensacola Beach area has lots of the things that are high on our list, especially plenty of great restaurants. We will definitely be going back sometime soon.

(Courtesy of Bob Zumwalt)

NOTE: Frank & Isabel Cason, Bob and I have been to this area and Museum and as Bob Zumwalt stated, it is certainly worth your time to visit. If you are military or retired there is a nice camp ground at the Naval Air Station. We even caught Isabel climbing in to the Blue Angel’s cockpit.

Doug & Paula Poad met in 1971, during their senior year of high school in Sarasota, FL. They dated

throughout college at the University of South Florida and were married on July 23, 1976. Paula was

born in Honolulu, HI before it became a state, while her father was serving in the Marine Corps. After

he retired, the family moved to Florida. Doug was born in Pittsburgh, PA where his father worked for

U.S. Steel. After he retired, the family moved to Florida for Doug's senior year of high school. Paula

shopped for groceries in the Winn Dixie where Doug worked after school and on weekends. One day,

Paula asked Doug where the marshmallows were and Doug told her that they were out of season... it

was love at first sight.

After working for Allstate Insurance in Saint Petersburg, FL for two years, Doug joined the U.S. Navy.

His commissioning as a Supply Corps Ensign in 1978 began a career that ended with his retirement

as a Commander in 1999. Paula had owned and enjoyed horses while growing up, so while Doug was

under the ice in the North Atlantic, she bought a 2 year old Saddlebred gelding in Virginia.

The Navy sent Doug to Pennsylvania State University from 1986-1988 to earn an MBA. In his se-

cond semester there, he decided that life after the Navy would include teaching at the college level.

Sure enough, he retired in 1999... into a job teaching marketing and management classes and run-

ning the internship program in that department at Mount Union College in Alliance, OH.

Life, however, is what happens while you're making other plans. In 2002, while Doug and Paula

were out riding one beautiful, unseasonably warm February day, the horses were spooked and ran

away with them. Paula's foot slipped out of the stirrup and she came off... sustaining a very severe

head injury. She spent more than three weeks in a coma before going to a very good inpatient

rehab hospital in Pittsburgh. After five months of extremely hard work, she was ready to come

home again. She still couldn't move her right side or talk, but those were things they could work

on from home.

Instead of continuing their travel in far-off, exotic lands, they decided that it would be easier to

travel around the U.S. in an RV, so they bought their

first one, a 1998 37' Fleetwood Discovery in 2005. In

2006, they decided that it was time to find their re-

tirement home. They wanted to look at land in NC,

but decided to get there by driving their motor home

to Chicago, IL; Denver, CO; and Taos, NM to visit

family & friends and see some sights. At the end of

this trip, on their 30th anniversary, they bought 2.5

acres on top of Becky Mountain, just outside of Bre-

vard, NC. They travelled to NC in their rig several

times over the next 3 years to get the land ready to

build on. Doug and Paula reside in Brevard with their

two dogs (Bambi & Thumper) and cat (Chelsea), where they enjoy the beauty of the mountains and the abun-

dance of good local music.

FOR THE COOK

Unstuffed Cabbage Rolls (Serves 6 to 8)

1 1/2 to 2 pounds lean ground beef 1 Tablespoon Oil 1 Large onion, chopped 1 clove garlic, minced 1 small head Cabbage, chopped 2 cans (14.5 ounces each) diced Tomatoes 1 can (8 ounces) Tomato Sauce 1/2 Cup Water 1 Teaspoon ground Black Pepper 1 Teaspoon Sea Salt Preparation: In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the ground beef and onion, and cook, stir-ring until ground beef is no longer pink and onion is tender. Add the garlic and continue cooking for 1 minute. *Add the chopped cabbage, tomatoes, tomato sauce, pepper and salt. Bring to a boil. Cover and simmer for 20-30 minutes, or until cabbage is tender. *NOTE: After browning the beef, onion and garlic, I place it in my slow cooker and then add all other ingredients to the pot instead of the skillet. I cook everything on high about 4 hours or until cabbage is done to taste and then turn on low until ready to eat. (May also be made in the pot and simmered on low for about 6 hours.)

A Chapter of Discovery Owners Association, Inc. (DOAI)

Membership Application

Membership is open to all members of DOAI. Dues are $15 per year and collected in two-year increments of $30. Collecting dues every other year reduces recordkeeping and eliminates the need for members to write small checks yearly. Initial dues are prorated at $1.25 per month in order to synchronize with this schedule. If you cancel your membership, there is no refund for the current year. However, the next year will be refunded if already paid.

Mail this application and your check in proper amount to our treasurer:
