Learning Experience at the Children’s Center

Two Students, who were finishing their coursework in the Early Childhood Associates’ Degree program, spent ninety hours of field experience in the ICC Children’s Center this fall. Ms. Elizabeth Ploussard and Ms. Nicole Schall, under the leadership of Professor Andrianna Smyrniotis and the guidance of the experienced early childhood teachers at ICC, immersed themselves in the day-to-day life inside an accredited early care and education center. Throughout the semester, they observed, assisted, planned, carried out, and reflected on their methods, all while forming strong bonds with

the children and teaching staff, and taking best practices with them through their careers in early childhood education. Central Illinois Rotaract Central Illinois Rotaract has been involved in philanthropy events this fall semester, including:

World Polio Day, October 24: raised money to support the End Polio Now campaign. The money raised, when matched by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, will pay for 65 children to be vaccinated from polio.

Midwest Food Bank, November 22: volunteered at their “Giving Tuesday” event packaging Tender Mercies ready-to-make food packets to feed those who have suffered a loss from a natural disaster. The event held on that day packaged over 5,000 packages providing over 21,000 meals.

Mitten Tree, ongoing to December 16: a Christmas tree has been set up in the lobby of the Technology Center, East Peoria campus, with tags to remind and solicit donations of mittens, hats, scarves, etc. for children aged newborn to 17. Donations can be placed on or under the tree, unwrapped, until Monday Dec. 16

Phi Beta Lambda

“Giving Gathering,” December 4: as part of a Community Service Project, Phi Beta Lambda (PBL), along with the ICC Culinary Institute, hosted a “Giving Gathering” for students in other student organizations, and any student with a heart for philanthropy. Kim Armstrong provided a brief workshop on business networking, delicious food was prepared by the Catering class of the Culinary Institute, contests were held, and the students ended by making fleece tie blankets for the Crittenton Center in Peoria. Winter wear (hats, mittens, and scarves) were also collected and will be donated to students at Peoria’s Calvin Coolidge Middle School.

Diesel Powered Equipment Technology Program now AED Foundation Accredited

The AED Foundation is pleased to recognize the faculty and staff at Illinois Central College (ICC) on achieving AED Foundation Accreditation of their Diesel Powered Equipment Technology (DPET) A.A.S. Degree program. This program demonstrates the school’s commitment to academic excellence and continuous improvement through the process of accreditation. It also signifies to the equipment industry stakeholders that the program has met rigorous industry-specific national equipment technical standards. The areas of focus include diesel engines, hydraulics-hydrostatics, electrical-electronics, power trains, A/C-heating and safety-administration. Through this accreditation, current and prospective students know that the program provides the best in diesel-equipment technical education as defined by the industry it serves. Illinois Central College has been offering educational opportunities to students since 1967. The two-year DPET program trains students to service, repair and diagnose diesel powered equipment like agricultural machinery, tractors, on-highway trucks, bulldozers, road graders, combines, loaders and more. The program combines classroom learning with hands-on experience. The lab is equipped with the latest electronic test equipment to help students diagnose problems. Students are required to complete two paid internships during their sophomore year at a dealership that services diesel-powered equipment. Upon completion of this program, students are ready to enter the workforce or continue their education by transferring to a four-year college or university. Jeff Gardner, DPET Program Chair, commented on the importance of AED Foundation Accreditation. “The Diesel Powered Equipment Technology Program at Illinois Central College is proud to be affiliated with The AED Foundation. Having the ability to easily evaluate and compare our program to others in the nation is extremely important to the staff here at ICC. Our number one goal is that our students graduate with the knowledge and skills required to exceed employer expectations. AED Foundation accreditation and the relationships formed within it will aid us in staying on the cutting edge of technology, ensuring our students will be ready to take advantage of the opportunities ahead of them.” ICC Agri-Business Club Professional Agricultural Students (PAS) State Conference and ContestS The National Professional Agricultural Student Organization (PAS) is a student-led organization that allows students to build and sharpen their skills so that they are ready for the workplace. Through competitive style learning and real-life application, our members are skilled professionals and prepared to work in all areas of the agriculture industry. Students compete in many individual and team competitions with other two and four year colleges and universities.

ICC Collegiate Farm Bureau ICC students and Collegiate Farm Bureau members Olivia Timmons and Opeyemi Olusuyi along with club advisor Pete Fandel attended the Illinois Farm Bureau Annual Membership Meeting at the Palmer Hotel in Chicago on December 7-8. The students attended workshops, heard from industry leaders and networked with other students. This is the first time ICC students have attended this event. Olivia commented, “This was one of the greatest experiences I have ever had. It allowed me to broaden my horizons and discuss current issues. I learned that while times are changing, the importance of the agricultural industry in Illinois has not.” Opeyemi added, “I had the opportunity to listen about discussions regarding problems facing agriculture today including shortage of workers, lack of consumer/producer relations and trade policies. Overall, this was a wonderful experience.” ICC student and Collegiate Farm Bureau Vice-President Opeyemi Olusuyi is pictured attending the Illinois Farm Bureau Annual Membership Meeting in Chicago on December 7-8. Educational Foundation

Holiday stewardship activities show appreciation to ICC’s most generous donors. Thanksgiving activities included the Phone-a-thank-a-thon, where members of the Educational Foundation Board of Directors called approximately 220 donors who have given more than $500 annually. These calls were simply a way to say “thank you” for supporting the College and the ICC students. Scholarship recipients personally delivered more than 140 poinsettias the first week of December as a thank you to our donors who give $1,000 or more annually. Over 40 donors who live further away were mailed a beautiful holiday centerpiece created by the horticulture students. Approximately 1,200 greeting cards were personalized and mailed to our donors to wish them all Happy Holidays. The Foundation Board of Directors and staff would like to welcome Paula Munns and Angie Ostaszewski to the Foundation Board of Directors. Paula Munns serves as an adjunct faculty member for the ICC Surgical Technology Program. Angie Ostaszewski is the Energy Efficiency Advisor for Ameren Illinois. The Educational Foundation Board of Directors continues to grow with a group of talented and committed individuals, who are dedicated to opening opportunities for the ICC students. The ICC Educational Foundation Board of Directors and staff are proud to announce a new annual scholarship in support of the ICC students. Loren and Margaret Swanson established the Swanson Family Baseball Scholarship. This scholarship is an example of their commitment to education and Loren’s many years of service in support of ICC Athletics. This scholarship will be awarded to members of the ICC baseball team who demonstrate need. The online scholarship application for the 2020-2021 academic year is available online now

through March 1st at 11:59 pm. Please encourage those you know to apply for these wonderful opportunities. Applicants can apply by completing one online application at icc.edu/scholarships.

Student Life The month of December has been a good one for students! 12/4/19: Phi Beta Lambda hosted an ugly Christmas sweater gathering where student clubs

came together to interact with one another and enjoy a nice dinner prepared by the culinary students. Kim Armstrong, Vice President of Marketing and Institutional Advancement, was kind enough to give a presentation about networking.

12/2-5/19: Campus Activities Board hosted a De-Stress week (which is a weeklong event) focusing on activities to help students release stress as they prepare for finales. There were therapy cats and dogs to cuddle, flavor oxygen bars, aqua massage beds, and many more things to do to help students manage stress.

12/9/19 ICC held an Athletics Recognition Ceremony for the Women’s Volleyball and the Men’s Soccer Teams in the cafeteria to celebrate their season and congratulate both teams on making it to Nationals. Student Trustee KJ Gaiter was blessed and honored to open up the ceremony with an introduction.

On Campus Housing Campus housing has held their occupancy rate above 92% all semester. There have been many student activities for involvement and meeting new people. One new activity is Women Wednesdays that are led by the Assistant Director Katherine Warren and Office Manager Candice Collins. They have also hosted Resident Interest Meetings, Bowling Night, S’mores and Scores, International Thanksgiving, and a De-Stress Event. On average, forty residents are participating in each activity.

Workforce, Diversity, and Career Development

The Workforce Equity Initiative is progressing well with 35 enrollments to date. There are 16 students enrolled in the LPN program, four students enrolled in CDL Truck Driving, and 15 students enrolled in Workforce Readiness Training. Of the enrollments, 57% are female and 43% are male. Additional demographic breakdown is as follows: 86% African American, 9% White/Caucasian, 3% Hispanic, and 3% American Indian. The most exciting news is that our first two graduates of the WEI

program (one male and one female), completed CDL Truck Driving training in December and have already been offered full time employment at a wage exceeding 30% of the living wage for our region. Additional information sessions were held on December 2nd and new applications are coming in daily. We expect to enroll many more students into programs starting in January and thereafter. Staff from ICC and other consortium colleges participated in Racial Equity Training on December 10 and 11. The training was provided by Dr. Walter Milton of From the Heart International Educational Services. All WEI program positions have been filled and we are progressing well.
