AUGUST OUTING
This will be a very special day out, to see the Archibald Prize exhibits at the Sydney Art Gallery.
When: Tuesday 22nd August
Transport: Coach, leaving VBC at 8.30 am sharp
There will be a stop along the way for morning tea. On arrival in Sydney we will visit the art gallery, followed by lunch at Doyle’s Restaurant in Watson’s Bay.
Cost: $75.00, which includes coach fare, entry to the Archibald exhibition, and lunch.
Please leave a substantial deposit today, if possible, or even pay in full.

What’s on in Newcastle this month?
One event of interest is the exhibition now showing at
the Newcastle Art Gallery. Called
ABSTRACTION, CELEBRATING WOMEN
ABSTRACT ARTISTS,
it showcases masterpieces from the National Gallery of
Australia which show the contribution of women in the
development of Australian abstract art. …and my first Magnolia

Cookery Corner
Creamy Broccoli Soup
Ingredients: Method:
2 teaspoons olive oil
1 brown onion, finely
chopped
2 garlic cloves,
crushed
1 1/2 broccoli heads,
cut into florets, stems
chopped
1 Red Royale potato,
peeled, chopped
4 cups (1L) salt-
reduced chicken or
vegetable stock
1. Heat the oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add the
onion and cook, stirring, for 5 mins or until onion softens. Add
the garlic and cook for 30 secs or until aromatic. Add the
broccoli stems, potato and stock and bring to the boil. Cook,
stirring occasionally, for 20 mins or until broccoli and potato
are very tender.
2. Add the broccoli florets and peas to the pan. Bring to a
simmer. Cook for 3-5 mins or until the vegetables are bright
green and just tender. Remove from heat.
3. Use a stick blender to carefully blend until smooth. Add the
cream and blend to combine. Season.
4. Ladle the soup evenly among serving bowls.
5. Serve with your choice of rolls, toast or croutons.
For a different touch, serve with parmesan wafers. Simply combine 1 ½ cups finely shredded
parmesan with ½ teaspoon ground paprika in a bowl, sprinkle over lined tray, and at 200
degrees for 2 mins. Break into pieces. Or, serve with a dollop of cream
