Celebrated papercut artist Hannah Vianos new book, B is for Bear: A Natural Alphabet (Sasquatch Books; $16.99; October 2015), follows the stunning example set by her first book, S is for Salmon: A Pacific Northwest Alphabet. Each page shows a different letter in the natural world, from A is for Acorn and B is for Bear to J is for Jackrabbit and W is for Wave.

Viano selects many unusual animals and natural elements as her subjects, such as E is for Egret, I is for Iceberg, and Y is for Yellow-Bellied Sapsucker. Her graceful papercut images are cut from black paper with an X-ACTO knife and soft colors are added digitally. Her work has been called striking, gorgeous, and eye-catching.

Viano explores the beauty of nature and the wonder it can inspire in all of us through her artwork and intriguing facts about each natural subject. In L is for Lightning Bug she writes, Call them fireflies or lightning bugs or Lampyridae. They fill a summer night with magical lights. Flora, fauna, the elements, and geology combine in this elegant outdoor alphabet to encourage kids of all ages to get outside and explore.
