Queen Victoria, Water Mark Proof, Rupees 10, At the top (in bold letters) GOVERNMENT OF

INDIA. In centre Denomination “TEN” below it RUPEES. On the bottom left side is the

facsimile signature of James Wilson, the Finance Member of the Legislative Council likewise on

the right side the facsimile signature of Lord Canning, the Governor General is seen.

Archival Note. Exceedingly rare.

As per Indian Paper Money book of Sri Kishore Jhunjhunwalla details given on page 62 about

Watermark is quoted here. “Usually the notes in this category have paper manufacturers code

as part of the watermark, it is located towards the bottom end and is represented as an alphabet

and 2 separate number of two digits each, the three place apart. The alphabet represents the

plate number. The first of the two digit numbers stands for the number of week in which the paper

was made and the second number represent the year of manufacture. For example, A 27 03 thwould mean that the paper was manufacture using plate A in the 27 week of Year (19)03”. But

according to Scholars Victoria Portrait Notes Watermark does not have Plate Numbers. A very

important and archival Note for serious Bank note collectors

Actual note colour may be vary. We have photo shop for better view of watermark. We recommend bidders to view the Note.

About uncirculated, exceedingly rare.

The depiction of the deity 'Lrooaspa' is one of the rare depictions of deities from the Iranian pantheon found on Kushan coins. He

has generally been identified with 'Druvaspa', the Zoroastrian 'guardian of the health of animals'. Most references to this guardian are

as a female whereas the deity depicted here is clearly male. However, rarely in Eastern Iranian tradition the deity is also known as a

male and that is undoubtedly the inspiration of this Kushan depiction. Alternatively, he has also been identified as Apam Napat, which is

identified in the Avesta as 'Aurvat-Aspa', i.e. the one who possesses a swift horse'. Apam Napat is also called the 'grandson of waters'

and he is usually associated with Neptune. Apam Napat was also associated with Druvaspa and together they are thought to confer

'Khwareno', or 'kingly glory', on to the ruler which legitimizes his divine status.

The importance of this depiction lies in the fact that it is unique, and hardly any parallels are known in the art of the Kushan

period. There exist damaged examples of figures which have been identified as Druvaspa on a temple wall in Panjient (Tajikistan) but

they are in the female form. The depiction on the coins therefore adds a significant dimension to our understanding of Zoroastrian and

Iranian iconography. Sold ` ....................... Estimate: ` 12,00,000-15,00,000

116 Akbar, Copper 1/8 Tanka, 6.79g, struck to the local Malwa standards, Burhanpur Mint, with additional word 'Jalalah' on reverse, Ilahi

Month Farwardin, Year 46. Very fine+, very rare.

The additional word 'Jalalahu' is observed on rare fractional coppers of Akbar of mintless type and Burhanpur mint. Dr. Abhishek

Chatterjee has opined that they were struck during the siege of Asirgarh which lasted from Tir 45 to Bahman 45. However, this coin has

Farwardin 46 on it which is two months out of the purview of this date range. Coins of Ardibihisht 46 are also known.

123 Akbar, Silver Rupee, 11.41g, Karrah Mint, mint-name in bottom quadrant, AH 969. Extremely fine, very rare.

Karrah is a place of well-known historic and strategic importance. Akbar received Karrah from Raja Ramachandra of Bhatha when he

was subjugated in mid-1562 (Ah969). Ramachandra agreed to be a vassal of Akbar and paid tribute to him, apart from surrendering

the region around Karrah to Akbar. Akbar made Karrah an administrative and strategic centre for his campaigns in Central India - his

commander Asaf Khan, the architect of these campaigns, was the fief-holder at Karrah. The known dates on these coins coincide

perfectly with these campaigns so it is logical to assume that the mint was run to pay the soldiers engaged in Asaf Khan's army. It has

been sometimes spelt at Karrah, Kada and Kurrah but actually it is Kara (in Hindi ? ??? and Urdu ) and often called with its sister town —ò

across the river Ganges called Manikpur. Kara falls in Kaushambi district while Manikpur has now become a part of Partapgarh District.

fine+, extremely rare.

After his 4th invasion of India, Ahmad Shah Durrani had appointed Taimur Shah as the Nizam of the occupied territory of the Punjab, with Adina Beg, the Nawab as his governor. He revolted against the Afghans and called the Marathas for help. A large army under the command of Raghunath Rao invaded Punjab in April 1758 and Taimur Shah fled towards Afghanistan. The Marathas occupied Lahore on 20th April 1758 and established their rule over the Subah of Punjab. The occupation by the Marathas did not last for more than 6 months. Adina Beg suddenly died in early 1759, which gave a chance to Ahmad Shah Abdali to invade India for the 5th time in late October 1759. The Marathas then retreated out of the Punjab.

Rupees struck by the Marathas in the name of Alamgir II at this time are known with dates AH 1172 and AH 1173, both with (posthumous) regnal year 7. AH 1173 commences on 25.08.1759 and the Marathas fled the Punjab in early November 1759 so presumably the coin was struck in short two Month gap in between.

290 Nizams of Hyderabad, Silver Rupee, 11.05g, “Broad flan”, Nanded Mint, in the name of Alamgir II, AH 117X/ RY 7. Patinated,

extremely fine, exceedingly rare.

The town of Nanded is a holy site for the Sikhs as the place where Sri Guru Gobind Singhji declared the holy Granth Sahib as the final th'Guru' of the sect. In mid- 18 century Nanded was a part of the kingdom of the Nizam of Hyderabad, although the surrounding area was

contested heavily between him and the Marathas. This is only the second piece known of this exceedingly rare mint. The first was

published by Dr. Shailendra Bhandare in JONS in his article on new mints of the Nizams' coinage. The general appearance of the coin

is very similar to the rupees of Ausa, which is located not far off from Nanded. The mint-name is very clearly visible on the coin, adding

to the collectability of this rare issue.

Attribution of these coins with the name of Charles II are debatable, some Western scholars do not attribute these coins to Charles The

II however most of these coins found with the coins of William and Mary veteran scholar Sri Pukhraj Surana believe that these coins

may be struck by Charles The II. More research of these mysterious coins will resolve the puzzle. However, there is unanimous view of

all the scholars that these coins struck on Mughal pattern by colonial powers English, Dutch, Danish or French.

facsimile signature of James Wilson, the Finance Member of the Legislative Council likewise on the right side the facsimile signature of Lord Canning, the Governor General is seen. Archival Note. Exceedingly rare.

As per Indian Paper Money book of Sri Kishore Jhunjhunwalla details given on page 62 about Watermark is quoted here. “Usually the notes in this category have paper manufacturers code as part of the watermark, it is located towards the bottom end and is represented as an alphabet and 2 separate number of two digits each, the three place apart. The alphabet represents the plate number. The first of the two digit numbers stands for the number of week in which the paper was made and the second number represent the year of manufacture. For example, A 27 03 would mean that the paper was manufacture using plate

thA in the 27 week of Year (19)03”. But according to Scholars Victoria Portrait Notes Watermark does not have Plate Numbers. A very important and archival Note for serious Bank note collectors.
