MISSIONER'S LETTER.DEAR PEOPLE OF TOTLEY,-

Your Vicar has asked me to come W you, to preach what is called a" TeachingMission" from March 14-21, 1926, and I most gladly consent.

The object of such a Mission is to set before you quite clearly and plainly.-..._, .all the teaching of our Lord as it is taught by His Church. You have heard it '~all before, of course, but it is a very great help to hear it all connectedly. In 1the Mission we shall start at the beginning on the first night and then go on each ~\night from the point reached the night before. By the end of the week we have '.been able to see how it all fits together and how it applies to our lives. f

To make such a Mission successful two things are chiefly needed. First--- ~Prayer. I want to ask you all to pray daily from now forward that God will •.bless this Mission and put His Power and Inspiration into it so that we may •••

learn from Him. i1

Secondly-s-I want to ask.if you will resolve to come every night of the Mission.It may seem a strange thing to come' to C.ih.ureh every. night for a week-but it ..will be worth it. I am sure I can promise you that. For all of us have muchto learn and the more we know the more there is to be learnt.

the diocese, and it is hoped to send a further sum in the near future.Parish of All Saints, Watrous, Ganada.-I have had a very refreshing letter

from Rev. B. J. Pasterfield, thanking our congregation for the sum of 308. He says," Already we are able to see the effect of your prayers, The congregation isimproving and it is wonderful how fortunate our women's organization hasbeen. " He tells me how thankful they are to have raised enough money to savetheir parish room from being sold for taxes. I think we little realize our ownprivileges until we realize the difficult-ies of church life in distant parts of theworld.

Dances in aid of Building Fund.-The dance arranged by Miss Tym andMiss Wilde in Totley BI'OokHall 011 November 25 was a marked success, the pro-ceeds amounting to £10 58. In offering our best" thanks to these two ladies fortheir splendid effort, we include also Mr. Tym and Mr. Wilde for their generoushelp in de£r'aying expenses and also all others wh~ gave their services. VICAR'S LETTER.My DEAR FRIENDS,~

Before Lent begins it is a good thing to have a clear idea in our minds of theway in which we are going to use it. Our first thought will of course be of theMission, and I hope everyone will do everything possible to keep free the eveningsof the week March 14--21. I propose also to hold special services on Wednesdaysin Lent at 7.45 as was done last year.

Of course all entertainments, dances, etc. will be discontinued during Lent,but that is no reason why the funds of the Church should suffer. The bestand most Christian way of giving is to give without looking for anything inreturn, and therefore Lent will present a special opportunity in this direction.We want to see all our existing debts (particularly that upon the organ) com-pletely wiped out in order that we may concentrate upon a new effort for thechoir stalls and the beginning of a vicarage scheme. In view of this let meput before you a thoroughly workable proposal and beg you all to respond to it.

I have secured promisesfrom certain members of the parish that they willgive as a Lent offering a sum not less than an average day's income, but this isoffered only on condition that at least forty people promise to do the same.

I hope that many of you will take up this challenge and send me ;)rournamesas soon as possible. I will then let them know when I have received the 40thpromise. No money should be sent in until the number is attained .. Apartfrom the value of the money itself it should be a happy thought for Christianpeople that on one day they are doing a whole day's work not for themselvesbut for God-it is a way of hallowing our ordinary work and helping us to doit for the glory of God. .

PAROCHIAL NOTES.Christmas Socials.-The annual Sunday School social was held on Tuesday,

December 29. The children enjoyed various games, a short concert (mainlyprovided by themselves), a conjuring performance kindly given by Mr. Vickers,and a, Christmas Tree.

The Prize-giving took place shortly after tea.The Parish Social took the form of a Whist Drive followed by a Dance,

and was held on New Year's Eve. The New Year was ushered in by the singingof Auld Lang Syne. Net profit, £3 18s. 7til.

Crossword Puzzle C'ompet·ition.-The first prize has been awarded to MissIda Creswick, Moorwoods Farm, and the second to Mrs. E. J. Hibbard, Cotleigh,Hackenthorpe, Sheffield. The actual number of entries received -before theclosing date was 83. The winners' est.imates were 89 and 90. (One cOlnpetitorfrom Dover actually guessed the correct number, but unfortunately sent in anincorrect puzzle.) The proceeds amounted to £13 lIs. 6il., but it is expectedthat there will be some small sums to add to this. Many thanks to all whohelped to sell the puzzles.

Benefit Whist Drive.-Mrs. Marshall of Hall Lane asks us to thank all thosefriends who kindly helped and contributed towards the Whist Drive on November23 in aid of :Mr. J. Marshall, who has been seriously ill for some weeks. Theproceeds were £16 128. 6d. v

Church Decorations.-\Ve offer our best thanks to all those who during thepast year have provided and arranged the flowers and plants in Church. Mrs.Hutton will "beglad to hear of additional volunteers for this service during thepresent year.

Dances in Totley School.-A very successful Dance was held on Thursday,~Tanuary 14. Many of the fancy costumes were very striking. In spite of thebad weather the attendance was very good. We take this opportunity of thank-ing all those who so kindly helped with the arrangements, and those who gavethe refreshments and other gifts. By their kindness the expenses were reducedto a minimum. The proceeds were £5 lOs.

Another Dance in School is arranged for Wednesday, January 27. Pleasenote that admission is by ticket (Is. 3d., including refreshments). _

Dance in Totley Brook Hall.~OnThursday, February II, a Dance will beheld in Totley Brook Hall, for which tickets can be purchased from Miss Tymor Miss Wilde, who have again undertaken the arrangement and whose previousefforts have been so successful.

Tolley Men's Recreation Society.-The annual meeting will be held in Mr.Evans' meetmg room, Totley, on Monday, February 8, time 8 p.m. Business:To receive the Secretary's and Treasurer's reports, the election of officers andcommittee for the ensuing year. A cordial invitation to attend is given to themen of Totley. The Club Room is open each evening (except Sunday) from7 to 10.30. Chess, draughts, dominoes, whist an? billiards are played. Annualsubscription 48. 4d., or Is. Id. p{jr quarter. There is. also in connection withthe Society a book-lending library. Books are lent out at a fee of ld. each forseven days. The scheme not only provides a good book for the member, butthe whole family circle belonging to the member benefits. Distributing night.every Thursday 8.30 to 9. Librarian, Mr. A. J. Foulstone. Men of Totley,join the Society and help to increase its usefulness. VICAR'S LETTER.l\1Y DEAR FRIENDS,~. I.write this letter during the Mission week, although, of course, you will not readIt until some days after that week is over. It is my earnest, hope that all of us willhave received a fresh impetus in our religious life and will have seen a new and clearervision of God. It remains now to keep alive and growing that new vision, to put intopractice and to make habits of the lessons which we have learnt. Above all we mustnot allow ourselves to go back to where we were before. There is no doubt that ifour eyes are more wide open-our knowledge of spiritual facts greater, then God looksfor and expects more from us. Every Mission is a "call to something higher "-adefinite step forward. But it is only a beginning, and we must. all aim at and prayfor lasting results. Let us think of our parish as one which has received a Mission,accepted its message, and is now getting to work in living out the Mission. So onEaster Day when we think of the Risen Christ, let us think too of ourselves as risenwith Him, starting a new day with Him-a day which is to be a,better, richer and happierday than the days which are past.

Is it too much to hope that every communicant in the parish will make his com-munion this Easter 1 If there are any who through sickness cannot do 80, please letme know, and I will make special arrangements for them. With all good wishes,

PAROOHIAL NOTES.Lent Offering Scheme.~·At the time of writing the number of offers to give not less

than one day's income as a Lent Offering has reached 13. '\Ve therefore need 27 morepromises before the scheme can be set in operation, for aU these promises arc conditionalupon reaching the total of 40. If the necessary number is reached the whole sumwill he used to wipe out our debt on the organ and set us free to begin other necessarywork.

The Organ. -On March 14 the electric organ blower was in use for the first, time.Let us not forget the voluntary work done during the past 17 months by those goodfriends who so willingly gave their time and effort. It is the readiness to do suchwork as this that counts for so much in the Christian life.

The late Mr. James l1far8hall.-We offer our deep sympathy to the widow and familyof Mr. )[arshall in their bereavement. His was a long and distressing illness, butitwas borne with courage and patience. As a near neighbour of the Church it>was rightand fitting that the first part of the burial service should be held in All Saints' Church.

Dance at Totley Brook Hall.- The proceeds of the dance referred to in our lastMagazine were £6 58.

VICAR'S LETTER..My DEAR FRIENDS,~

Please allow me to begin by thanking you all for your generous offering onEaster Day, which I very deeply appreciate, especially at a time when so many aregiving so regularly and so unselfishly for OUr Church funds.

It is encouraging to note that the number of communicants this Easter was147-an increase of 15. I stilI feel sure that there must be some who have beenconfirmed but who have never yet made their communion since the church wasbuilt, and I do hope that all will make up their minds to use regularly theoppor-tunities and privileges which are theirs to claim. One of the results of the Missionshould undoubtedly be the steady growth and building up of our communicantlife-it is one of the surest indications of a live parish.

May I ask you all to remember in your prayers the difficult days through whichour country is passing, that God will put" a right spirit" in those who are engagedin industrial disputes. Let us try to view these questions not as politicians orpartisans but as Christians who seek only what is right and just in the sight ofGod. Then only can "He guide our feet into the way of peace."

B.J. Pastorfield (Watrous, Canada) dated March 3."We have been praying for your Mission and will do so all through Lent,

and I trust that it may bring forth fruit. 'Ve have much to thank you for. Twoweeks ago I was able to send for a much-needed Font which will be the only pieceof furniture in the Churoh-s-plain but good-given by one of the ladies whosehusband died last year. Just before Lent we were able to get the interior re-decorated ... and perhaps before long we will be able to get the pews 1'8-

varnished. I am glad that you have suggested the lay-link ... one of my keenworkers will be very pleased to write to one of your workers."

VICAR'S LETTER.My DEAR FRIE:NDS,-

Our Church is now free from debt, and thanks to the great generosity of our.friends the organ is also paid for, and we are able to look ahead towards thenext step.

The Church Council has resolved that we should concentrate now upon afund to provide a permanent Vicarage and also to complete the choir stalls.The forthcoming Sale of Work (in the autumn) will therefore have these objectsin view, and it is hoped that everyone will do what they can to help.

A meeting of workers has already been held and the general plan has beendecided upon, but of course it will be necessary for many others to give theirservices if a well-stocked bazaar is to be achieved in so short a time. No doubtmany of you will be asked by the stan-holders to make something for one or otherof the stalls, but in any case do not wait to be asked. Please help by makingup your mind what you can do and setting to work at once.

We are all deeply concerned about the serious illness of Mr. Kewbould,whose absence makes such a marked gap in our Church life. It will be theearnest prayer of all of us that he may soon be with us again and his familyrelieved from their great strain and anxiety. It has been a great help to himto know that his friends remember him in their prayers, and I know that youwill all continue to do so both in Church and at home during this critical time.

VICAR'S LETTER.My DEAR FRIE.NDS,-

I think a sufficient interval has nowela psed since the }fission for all of usto ask ourselves what definite progress has resulted from it. There; are many,no doubt, who made resolutions known only to themselves and God, and who arequietly carrying them out; but there should also be some outward and visiblesign that the spirit of the Mission has come to stay. I should like to:put beforeyou as a practical suggestion the forming of a guild of communicants, possiblynot a large one, but composed of people keen enough to pledge tihetnaelves toaccept a simple rule of life based upon the lessons and ideals which the Missionput before us.

I should suggest a rule on the following general lines :~(1) A definite promise about da.ily prayer.(2) A promise to communicate at. least. monthly and preferably together on

a fixed day.(3) A promise to join the Free-will Offering scheme if not already enrolled,

.on the principle of giving regularly either in Church if present, or through theF,'W.O. envelope if unable to be there.

(4) A promise to pray for certain specified objects within and outside theparish, for which the united prayers of the guild are requested from tdme to time.

Our communicants are asked to think this matter over, so that some suchplan may bejrossible in. the near futurc.

* * * * * * *May I remind the members of the Fmc-will OfIering scheme that there are

a number of subscriptions due-chiefly those of annual subscribers. I shall beglad to receive new names to add to the Iist', and also to supply envelopes to anywho have exhausted their supply.

It is the opinion of a growing number of present day Churchpeople t.hat weshould aim at meet.ing all ordinary Church expem;ef>by means of a F.V{.O. schemerather than rely upon Sunday collections for this purpose. In many parishesthis is actually being dOM, hut it is a change which can only come about whenevery Churchman does his share. In this parish we have some forty F.'Y.O.subscribers only-and it can only be when all members of the congregation giveregularly through the scheme that anything like a fixed income can be assured.

'What we give to Church expenses is, after all, the payment for value received-he;1t, light, comfort, etc. In any case it can hardly he called a gift to God, forit is all spent on ourselves. Ob-viously, it would be better to pay it as a due, asregularly as we pay the rent and the gas bill athome, and use t'he collections inChurch as a means of giving to God by supporting missions, hospitals, charities,

"and other organizations. This, of course, is looking a long way ahead, hut I putit before you as a more satisfactory arrangement than the one to which we havegrown accustomed. .

Let us once get the Free-will Offering scheme working in such a way as-toinclude everybody, then this ideal Can become a fact.

The ancient city was reached ingood time to view the Cathedral, to scale the dizzy height of the great CentralTower, to see the wondrous beauty of the Angel Choir, the Chapter house, andCloisters; and to learn something of the history of t.he sacred building and its.architectural glories. None the less interesting was a short visit, paid to theCastle, with its picturesque tower and keep. The greatest t.rca.t of all, however,was that of being able to hear the rendering of Evensong" To many this wasthe first occasion the boys had ever had of hearing a Cathedral service, and theexquisite beauty of the singing and the perfect phrasing of the psalms, will notreadily be forgotten. Such a service should prove an inspiration to make ourown as near perfection as possible, and t.hus (who knows?) be the means ofbringing people nearer to God.

The return journey, following a delightful and refreshing tea, was equallyenjoyable, the party being joined by a few adult members of the Church whohad made the outward journey by t.rain , P. G.

VICAR'S LETTER.My DEAR FRIESDS,-

The time has come to say something more on the subject of a Communicants'Guild to which I referred in a recent, number. I now invite all confirmed membersof the parish who are really in earnest about. their spiritual life to giw~ in their namesif they are willing to assist in forming a guild. Then when a reasonable number ofnames have been sent in I shall call a meeting of all of them, and at that meeting thewhole matter will he explained and discussed, and those who are ''\Tilling will formthemselves into a fellowship, draw up a, rule of life and appoint any necessary officers.I am particularly anxious that our younger ctttnmunicantsshouldbe the backboneof the guild. If you are not sure whether you wish to join or not, send in your nameand come to the meeting, and then when you have heard an aboutIt you will be bett-erable to make up your mind. It is such an easy thing to have a religion which is justone of the many interests of our lives, to look upon our Church as a place. where wecan spend an hour on Sunday evenings, and to be content to stand still instead of"daily increasing" in God's ,. Holy Spirit more and more" as the years go by.

If the business man took his business no more seriously than most of us take ourreligion he would soon be out of business, if the artist or the workrna.n took as littletrouble to know his job as most churchmen take to know the real meaning of being aChristian they would soon be out of work, and the main purpose of this guild is to bandtogether those ,•...ho are really prepared to take trouble both to know the Lord's willand to do it. There is a passage in the Bible which speaks of the wicked doing" evilwith both hands earnestly."

-Jesus Christ wants disciples who are ready to do good with both hands insteadof the kind of people who dabble in it, with one hand, which is exactly what so manyare really doing.

VICAR'S LETTEH.My DEAE FRIE~DS,~

I hardly need remind you of the approach of our Patronal Festival on Novem-bel' 1and the following Sunday. In spite of the fact that All Saints Day falls ona Monday I hope that there will be a good llllmber who will try to be present atthe services of that day and especially at Holy Oommunion at 7 a.m. Thosewho cannot come are asked to be present in the Spirit and to pray for God'sblessing Upon their parish during the coming year. The Festival will be continuedon the following Sunday and we hope to see a. full church at all services.

Let us not forget our friends in our Sister Parish who will be observing theirFestival too, and no doubt remembering us in their prayers.

On Armistice Day (November 11), a short service will be held at II a.rn.,but the congregation are asked to be in their places a few minutes earher so thatthere may be no interruption of the two minutes' silence. At the earnest requestof our Bishop, Sunday, ~ovember 14, will be observed as " Bishopric Sunday"throughout the whole diocese, and our thoughts concentrated upon the urgentneed for the completion of the scheme for dividing the diocese of Southwell.

During the following fortnight every parish and every churchman in thecounties of Derby and Notts are asked to do their utmost to ensure that thenCccsf!laryfunds are forthcoming to complete the taek. Advent Sunday is to bea day of Thanksgiving and it is earnestly hoped that on that day the objects ofthis Intensive Campaign will have been achieved.

Again we ask all our kind friends and well-wishers to support our Bazaar onNovember 12 and I:J. Particulars will be placarded about the district. Theopener on the first day will be the Marchioness of Hartington, and it is hoped thatall who can will be there to welcome her and show their appreciation of her greatkindness in coming. At the moment \1,1ecannot announce opener's name for thesecond day, but hope to make it known at an early date.

All Our readers wi ll regret to hear that two of our friends are loavingtheparish. Mr.and lfr:;;. George Bloor, who have been closely associated with thechurch life of Totley for a long time and who have given such valuable servicesin so many ways, are about to take up new work in Scotland. \Vhile we con-gratulate :.\11'. Bloor on his appointment we should like him and 'Mrs. Bloor toknow that Weshall miss them badly both in church and in the social life of Totley.:MayGod's blessing go with them and keep alive the many ties of friendship whichhave been formed here.

May I first wish you all a very happy Christmas and invite you to be present at the .services of that day.

Christmas is one of the Greater Festiva,ls of the Church on which all communicantsshould make their communion. As a matter of fact, Wesay as much every time we use theword. "Christ-Mass "-the very name shows how inseparable are the ideas oitheFestival of our-SaviOur's birth and the offering of the Christian sacrifice. So too thetraditional feasting with which Christmas is associated in our minds speaks plainly ofthe Heavenly Banquet of His Body and Blood, and if this duty is neglected there is verylittle point in keeping the festival at all-it becomes an empty shell and nothing more.

It is right to rejoice and to make merry at this happy tim6-'"it is a thorougWyChristian custom to eat and enjoy our Christmas dinner with it,s turkey and goose andplum pudding and all the rest of it, but this is a very secondary part of the right observ-ance of the day. The first and most important act of Christmas Day is and has alwaysbeen that act of worship which Jesus Himself instituted for US and in which we maycome and adore the Christ Child just as truly as did those Shepherds in that stable somany centuries ago. After that it is indeed meet andright to carry the spirit of rejoicinginto our own homes, to feast and ma,kemerry, remembel'ing " this thing that is come topass."

* * * * *The Sale of Work was a little disappointing in respect of the numbers who attendedit, largely owing to the effects of the coal stoppage and partlya.lso to the Weather onthe second day. In spite of this it is hoped that our tre..asurer will soon be able to declarea substantial total and that we shall not feel that we have been unsueceeetul.

.We owe our best thanks to Lady Hartington for her great kindness in coming to-open the Bazaar and also to everyone who has contributed in work and in money.

Totley Sport8men. Ambitious Scheme.-Thereis a growing feeling amongst thevarious sports sections that it would be to the advantage of all concerned to amalgamate,viz. the Cricket and Football Clubs, the Recreation Society, together with the LendingLibrary, and to have a suitable place as a common home. It is anticipated the cost 'willbe about £500, and for the purpose of making an effort towards this it is proposed to havea Totley Sports Carnival during the summer of 1927, probably August Bank Holiday,
