by Treesa spencerThe Chinese Lunar calendar began in 2697 BC, when the Yel-

low King became King.Chinese New Year’s days are also called the Spring Festival.

They will last 10 days and the year of the Goat (lamb / Ram) will last until February 7, 2016.

Animals in the Chinese Zodiac were created for counting years long before the Christian calendar existed. The selection and order of the animals that influenced people’s lives were or-ganized in the Ham Dynasty (202 BC -220 AD) and related to the number 12.

One JI equals 12 years, one year has 12 months, one day has 12 time periods called Shi Chen and there are also 12 full moons within one year.

And; it just so happens that 12 straight strikes equals a perfect 300 game! (just thought I’d throw that in.)

If you were born in 1907, 1919, 1931, 1943, 1955, 1967, 1979, 1991, 2003 or 2015, you are a Goat person.

You can enhance your chances of “good luck” during the year of the Goat (even if you are not a goat) by wearing a little goat charm or a jade charm. Might as well get a little edge while you can.

GONG XI FA CAI - MAY YOU BE HAPPY, HEALTHY AND WEALTHY IN THIS YEAR OF THE GOAT!

Pete Weber Stars in New “This Is SportsCenter” CommercialIconic ESPN promotional spot features PBA Hall of Famer in starring role

CHICAGO – For the first time in the 21-year history of ES-PN’s iconic “This Is SportsCenter” commercial series, a bowler is playing a starring role and that bowler is the sport’s most rec-ognizable star, Professional Bowlers Association Hall of Famer Pete Weber.

The Pete Weber promotional spot made its debut Sunday in conjunction with the live ESPN telecast of the United States Bowling Congress Masters. Weber qualified for the Masters tele-cast as the No. 4 player in the five-man stepladder finals in his bid for a record 11th PBA major title and a win that would allow him to join Mike Aulby and Norm Duke as the third player to complete the PBA Grand Slam (PBA World Championship, PBA Tournament of Champions, U.S. Open and Masters).

In keeping with the tradition of This Is SportsCenter’s light-hearted humor, the spot portrays Weber as a stereotypical league bowler. He emerges from a side door and follows ESPN broad-cast star Kenny Mayne toward the exit of ESPN’s Los Angeles offices carrying a vintage one-ball bowling bag and stopping at the reception desk to exchange a pair of rental shoes for his street shoes. And it concludes with the receptionist spraying the rental shoes with disinfectant.

The “TSIC” promotional series made its debut in 1994, and has featured a Who’s Who roster of legendary stars from almost every sport, except bowling, until Weber’s appearance. The spot can be seen on YouTube (http://youtu.be/xT7GHFf1FSM).

While Weber had appeared on television nearly 150 times during his career, it was the first time the 37-time PBA Tour champion has done a nationally-televised commercial. It was, in his words, “Wonderful. Everyone in Los Angeles looked at me and said, ‘Hey, that’s Pete Weber.’

“I admit, I get a thrill when other celebrities recognize me,” Weber added. “Everyone in Bristol (ESPN’s Connecticut base) knows me because I’ve been around there a lot, but I had never been to the Los Angeles offices before.”

The project had been in planning stages for months, and when Weber’s schedule finally matched up with ESPN’s shoot-ing schedule, he made the trek to Los Angeles with little idea what to expect.

“I went in on Wednesday evening, met Chantre (Camack, the talent director for the project) and basically had all day Thurs-day free. When we were walking over to ESPN, Chantre asked me if I’d like to do the Sports Nation show. I said, sure, but I didn’t know it was live. Otherwise I might not have displayed my middle finger.” He laughed.

“Then we watched (Golden State Warriors star) Steph Curry shoot his commercial, where he was in the buffet line. I also met (Houston Rockets star) James Harden. We started shooting about 4:30 and were done by 6.”

During his bantering with Mayne – noted for his offbeat sense of humor – Weber said, “Kenny asked me if I’d ever bowled a game over 300. I told him as a matter of fact, I bowl in a mixed handicap league with my wife Tracy and I shot a 300 with three pins of handicap, so I had a 303 game.

“I talked with Kenny for about a half hour,” he said. “What a nice guy, very intelligent. Everyone was first class, A-one, as nice as can be. It was an honor to be part of it.”

STANSELL 847, ABAKUMOFF 276 ToPs In deaF TraVel aT Jewel cITy

GLENDALE — In Southern California Deaf Traveling League’s second round stop at Jewel City Bowl the scorings were better than the first round at same place with 10 bowlers making the day’s honor roll. Although most of the bowlers started low and finished high., hence no big series as only a handful had good start. League President Ed Abakumoff had poor start but finished with league’s new season high game 276.

Topping the honor roll was Jeff Stansell for the 2nd consecu-tive time with 847 from game of 210, 176, 247 and 214. Also a surprise with a 800 was Gardy Rodgers who returned from last season’s surgery with 170-236-246-176 for 828. Missing 800 with poor start of 163, Robert Audette finished with 193-204-227 for 787. After poor two games start, Abakumoff finished with 213 and his big 276 for 770. Paul Taffolla, Jr who won our deaf singles classic last month, continued to improve with 203-185-180-180 for 728. Dan Flores closed with a 200 for 719 and lefty Bob Jones was hit with a lot of 7 pin taps finished with a 715. Taffolla, Jr’s father Paul Taffolla, Sr hit 701 and Bob Taylor had a 200. Sharon Caldwell had the day’s ladies high game, 188 and series 688.

The scorings was high that day as of the six teams only one came 9 pins short of a 2000 team series with 3 teams in 2100 range with day’s Stansell’s Mid City 2147 top. Overall for the day the league averaged 173.25 per bowler.

Audette’s Eagle Rock broke its first place tie from Flores’ Or-ange County with a 13-7 points win over Jones’ S F Valley and took over first place. Orange County could only win 12-8 over 3rd place Low’s Hollywood and fell to 2nd, one point behind Eagle Rock. Hollywood remains in 3rd. Fourth place Stansell’s Mid City near swept Abakumoff’s Riverside 16-4 to stay in 4th place and the loss puts Riverside in 6th place. S F Valley moved up to 5th 1.5 points ahead of Riverside.

The 54 years old all deaf scratch traveling league thanks the Jewel City Bowl management and staff for excellent lane condi-tioning. Next travel stop place and date will be Del Rio Lanes on February 22 at Noon.

PBA Spare ShotswhaT Is The GreaTesT Pba ToUrnaMenT oF chaMPIons TV MoMenT?In celebration of the 50th anniversary Barbasol PBA Tournament of Champions which gets underway on Wednesday, Feb. 11, at Woodland Bowl in Indianapolis, you are invited to vote on your favorite moment by clicking on the special “TOC Poll” link at the top of the pba.com home page (http://www.pba.com/Vote/).

The top three moments, based on fan voting, will be aired as part of the live ESPN telecast of the TOC finals on Sunday, Feb. 15, at 1 p.m. ET.

Below is a list of 12 of the Tournament of Champions’ most historic moments in order of when they happened. If you think the PBA’s panel of experts missed a key TOC television moment, visit PBA on Facebook or Twitter to submit your favorite.

1967 - Jack Biondolillo shoots the first TV 300 game in PBA history.1970 - Don Johnson shoots 299 in the title match.1971 - Johnny Petraglia makes four straight TV shows and wins three straight titles, culminating with the T of C.1984 - Mike Durbin becomes the first player to win three T of C titles (1972, 1982 & 1984).1986 - Marshall Holman wins 2nd T of C and surpasses $1 million in career earnings (3rd player to do so).1991 - A bomb scare temporarily halts the telecast; David Ozio eventually wins the title.1993 - George Branham wins the last Firestone T of C and becomes first African-American to win the event.1995 - Mike Aulby wins to complete Bowling’s Triple Crown and Grand Slam.2002 - Jason Couch wins his third straight T of C title to become the only “three-peat” winner in the event.2010 - Kelly Kulick becomes the first female to win a PBA Tour title.2011 - Mika Koivuniemi shoots 299 vs. Tom Daugherty’s 100 in the semifinal match, then wins the event and a PBA record $250,000 first prize.2013 - Pete Weber becomes the oldest player to win the event at age 50 (his second T of C win).

CHRIS PAUL INVITATIONAL PULLS LARGEST ESPN AUDIENCE SINCE 2012The ESPN broadcast of Chris Paul’s CP3 PBA Celebrity Invitational presented by Bowlmor AMF averaged 1.1 million viewers on Super Bowl Sunday, the largest audience for any PBA telecast since 2012. The two-hour show, a fund-raiser benefiting the CP3 Foun-dation and featuring 10 PBA stars, also had a strong rating amongst the highly sought-after 18-49-year-old male and female audience, garnering the highest rating in that demographic for a PBA telecast since 2010.

For those who may have missed it, the sixth CP3 PBA Celebrity Invitational was won by the team of Ronnie Russell and rapper French Montana, 150-139, over perennial favorites Jason Belmonte and host Chris Paul. Bowlmor AMF hosted the event at AMF Bowl-O-Drome in Torrance, Calif. Montana, an admitted bowling novice, used a straight-down-the-middle approach and became an instant media darling across the hip hop landscape. Montana, on his own, has more than three million Twitter followers.

The CP3 ratings came on the heels of an announcement that audiences for the GEICO PBA World Series of Bowling VI telecasts were up by just over 18 percent over the previous year.

Five Hit $2,200 Match Game at Westminster LanesPatti Brode and Ely Cruz were on hand for the picture and re-ceived their share of the $2,200 Pot. Patti, Eli, Manny Lagao and Benjain Chung each get $440 and Matt Goodlowe gets 75% $330 as this was his 3rd event this year. There is $110 carryover to Keystone Saturday.

Cyndi & Ed nail $2,555 Mystery Match Game at WestminsterNympha Cruz ABTA Mainstay, congratulates Easy Ed Palma and Cyndi Kelley on their $2,555 Win of the Mystery Match Game which is Game-2 Scratch drawn by Tourney Hi Qualifier who was Mr. John Armenia.

WEsTMINsTER — on our return to popular West-minster Lanes we surely had some fun and Excitment there. Henry Narciso fired a big 258 game #3 to win his second ABTA Title in fine style and take home a nice $1,900 top prize as his reward.

The turnout was lighter than normal as there were big events going on in Las Vegas and some big parties too but 144 entrants gave it their all with lower Cut Scores of +56 Men, and the ladies chipped in at +40. Added Super Seniors were Ed Palma +53 Sun Sun-dara +52 and Patti Brode led the ladies +36 for the seniors.

Top Qualifiers were Men, John Armenia +125 and Deb-orah sanders led the ladies +114. They will receive paid entries for their fine nowling to any regular ABTA event.

Armenia drew for the Match Series and we had no-one match the 591 score so the pot carries over to Keystone Saturday. He also drew for the Mystery Match Doubles. Two Lucky Bowlers won a tidy $2,555. They being Cyndi Kelley and Eddie Palma. They got $1,277.50 each and we es-timate the new pot at $900 at Keystone saturday.

The Beat the Board finals were on and where you finish is where you will cash. Game #1 had Minh Dang lead the way at +36 winning the first side pot in the process.

In game Two Danny Gue-varra got hot and led with a +77 with Minh Dang right be-hind at +75. Scores for men and women to the top 16 were

in at +24. So it is tight going to game #3.

Game #3 saw ABTA regu-lar Henry Narciso get hot and with his 258 scratch went barely by Danny Guevarra with his final hcp score of +118 to win the title. Guevarra four pins behind +114 and Mr. Ramon Alliman in 3rd with a nice steady +105. It took +31 for the men and +18 ladies to make the top 16 which includes 3 guaranteed Ladies. By the way Henry came from 58 pins behind to win this one he got hot in game 3 for the win, and he didn’t realize he had won. Never Say Die Folks :-)

This is his second ABTA title. Congrats to a fine young man!!

The top 16 got $100 min. guaranteed and we saw 35 bowlers cash in at Westmin-ster. It was great to see several new members and others we have not seen in some time at Westminster. Even four new members from Visalia. The Barnhill family, father and three sons. super nice people and Tim Barnhill cashed. It was also great to see Jeff Liscano cash in his return to ABTA action.

The event was over and Mr. Narciso drew for the Match Game. 158 was the score and five winners sharing the $2,200 Pot were Benjamin Chung, Patti Brode, Ely Cruz, Manny Lagao and Matt Good-lowe. Benjamin, Patti, Ely, and Manny got $440 each. Goodloe $330 for 75% of the pot. There is a $110 carryover at Keystone Saturday and we estimate the Match Game at

$1,000.The 3-6-9 roll off saw only

Dan Raidy and Danny Gue-varra able to get two 9’s or better so they each got a $50 consolation. Again the pot is worth $3,000 Saturday at Key-stone.

Thanks a bunch to West-minster and the staff for host-ing us we will return soon as it is a great place for the ABTA to bowl. Get well wishes to Proprietor Mike Jacoby. We missed him being on hand this week.

Keystone Lanes is our host saturday Feb. 14. Qualify at 1:00 - 2:30 - 4:00 & 6:00.

BOWLING NEWSFebruary 12, 2015 Page 7

Palos Verdes Bowl

sAN JosE — Driven by a desire to keep the memory of his friend Tony Reyes alive, Ed Godbout set out last year to commemorate his late buddy by holding a Jr./Adult Doubles tournament to raise funds to create a scholarship in Reyes’ honor. Godbout thought up the idea and with the help of Lindsey Wong and the graces of the Reyes’ family (wife Nichole, daughter Gianna and Tony’s Mom, Jessica), he set out to do this bowling event. Godbout had known Tony six years and with the help of Tony worked together to build a junior league at 4th Street Bowl. Tragically, only two months into their venture to get this junior league going, we lost Tony. God-bout was stunned as was everyone else upon hearing the news. As he was a first-time youth director, he had no idea what he would do? Thankfully due to the support of his wife, Annie and a couple of his junior’s parents, their youth bowling program kept going. What started with a mere 15 juniors in their league has grown to almost 50 today and it is still growing! Also coming on board was Coach Anthony Vasquez and his wife, Gina, who now serve as Co-Directors for the event and they all gave Godbout a reason to keep going with his venture. The Tony Reyes Memorial Scholarship Jr./Adult Doubles event was born. The event, both years, has taken place at 4th Street Bowl in San Jose which is where Tony Reyes’ pro shop is located. Last year the tournament was a hit but little did Godbout know, it gained much attention from around the state and when he announced this year’s event’s date, January 10th, some six to eight months ago, the enthusiasm and interest just kept growing. Godbout was soon faced with a filled squad and quickly decided to add a second squad and much to his surprise, a week before the event that too was filled! All the promotion and goodwill from the inaugural event was paying off!

92 Jr./Adult teams turned out for this year’s event with bowlers from as far away as Sacramento, Modesto, Stockton and Manteca. According to Godbout, this year’s turnout “is three times bigger than last year!” This year’s event raised $1,840 for the Reyes Schol-arship fund. That is due to his year-long promotion of the event which entailed “contacting all of Tony’s friends in the PBA, as well as all the bowling houses and pro shops. I got donations from people like Jason Sterner, Chris Warner, Joe Goldstein, Sr. and Jr., Erin Lenahan from EFX, Leanne Hulsenburg from Storm, the San Jose Sharks, Tony Martin from Lord Field/Lane Master (which was the tournament sponsor with Bowling Average) and, my biggest helper on getting donations every year Gary Hafelfinger.” His newest sponsor that came on board just two weeks before the event was Cutesy Cupcakes in Scotts Valley. And, thanks to event photogra-pher, Bruce Shoji, participants were able to purchase a commemorative photo with their partner that had a water mark of Tony Reyes incorporated into their photo. This year’s tournament also saw the debut of the Tony Reyes pattern – 37 feet.

And hearing and seeing the compliments right after this year’s event concluded, it sounded like everyone who participated had a great time and all for a good cause. From Facebook here’s a few comments: Anthony Crosby stated, “U R a Godsend for youth bowl-ing. You are a treasure to 4th Street Bowl.” Tony McGuire, who has three youth boy bowlers who “love what Ed does!” And Jerry Humphries chimed in “100% agree.” Irene Wilson a youth bowler who came to bowl the event with her Dad, Stan, for the first time this year said, “The tournament went very well. It didn’t start until thirty minutes after the scheduled time because the photographer took pictures of each team, but that was understandable because the alley was packed with up to six teams (twelve people) on a pair of lanes. The raffle was very interesting and successful because they raffled off at least twenty different items/services. I thought it was creative that they put a bag in front of each raffle item so that you could buy a pack of raffle tickets and place as many tickets as you wanted in each bag. Bowlers moved a pair to the right after every game and the handicap division took up most of the lanes while the scratch division took up about eight lanes. I bowled the 2pm squad, but no matter what time it was, the bowling alley was crowded. There were bowlers from all over California that I saw there and it seemed like they were able to raise a lot of money. I definitely want to attend the tournament again next year! I was fortunate enough to win a 3-ball Vise bowling bag in the raffle and my friend, Tim Cagle II, won the Tony Reyes plastic ball signed by many, many pros and was the grand prize! They even had San Jose State gear in the raffle and baked goods for sale. Also there was a table where people were selling tiles with different sports teams on them and jewelry. This tournament had everything you could imagine!”

Ed Godbout is already looking to the 2016 event. “Next year the tournament will be on January 9th and 10th so I won’t have to turn away anyone! Sadly this year, due to space, I had to turn five teams away and they will be the first ones in next year to hopefully make up for this year’s overbooking.”

oF DUTY” when it came to bowling. He wrote three bowl-ing columns a week when few or no other lead sports columnists cared to do so. He did so when all but a few newspapers showed any interest in bowling. He did so because he loved bowling. That is why bowling and bowl-ers love Chuck Pezzano.

Chuck Pezzano was so dif-ferent from the majority of to-day’s bowlers.

While so many of today’s bowlers ask what Bowling can do for them, as in the query “what am I getting from the USBC for my dues,” Chuck Pezzano always asked what he could do for bowling? When-ever he found that he could do something for bowling, he did it. While he was a newspaper columnist, his real career was bowling.

Over the last sixty years Mr. Pezzano wrote at least one bowl-ing column a week. He wrote at least ten thousand columns and ten million words about bowl-ing. He wrote thirteen bowling books. In short, he was the Cal Ripken of bowling writers and maybe the Cal Ripken of all sports writers. He was the most prolific bowling writer in the world. His show was the lon-gest running in bowling

Mr. Pezzano was bowling’s biggest promoter and an innova-tor. He was a charter member of the PBA in 1958. He developed the first high school bowling program in the United States and championed women’s bowl-ing and women bowling writers. He was a pioneer in sports tele-vision working with Mel Allen, Jack Buck, Nelson Burton, Jr., Chris Schenkel and Pat Sum-merall to name a few.

Finally, Chuck was always gracious, helpful and accommo-dating. While he was famous and a well known bowling per-sonality he still remained hum-ble and down to earth. Fame didn’t go to his head. A decade ago when I was a BWAA rookie I spent time with him at meet-ings and meals and found him to be very personable. Chuck Pez-zano made me, a newcomer, feel welcome

I am grateful for having known Chuck Pezzano. It was a privilege. He was one in a mil-lion and I would like to thank him for being himself.

BURBANK — There are a number things that are great about bowling. To name a few, it takes place indoors. Con-stant climate control! You can drink beer and eat pizza while you do it! You can wear crazy shirts and name your team something outrageous! Okay, that was a stretch but the best thing of all is that it is a sport you can participate in for life!

I was bowling a tournament this weekend, when I no-ticed a bowler that was using a cane, on the approach. He was older and had been suffering with quickening arthritis for some time. This made me think of all the people who bowl in spite of their physical difficulties. There are single and double amputees on the lanes as well as the blind. Really!

Years ago, I bowled State Tournament with a woman whose fingers were so badly damaged by arthritis, she used a special ball. It had a handle to hold rather than fin-ger holes and the handle would collapse back into the ball when she released it. The ball was sanctioned and consid-ered legal by the WIBC! Awesome!

I had the pleasure of meeting a couple of bowlers over 100 years old. One woman and one man. He didn’t even start bowling until he was fifty! Both had averages over 120 and competed against the youngsters (70 to 90 year olds) with gusto.

All of these bowlers give me great hope that I, too, can continue to participate in my beloved sport no matter what physical challenges life may bring me.

DOWNEY — Week 2 began the separation of the contenders and pretenders as three teams managed 4-1 wins to remain on top with 5 weeks to go. DV8 used a huge 880 Game 3 to take down Erickson Foods 4-1 as all four bowlers shot 205 or better. Sam Hitchcock dominated the pair as he shot 670, Bobby Campagnale used a huge 236 Game 2 to shoot 623. Threadworks will face DV8 next week since Eric Snow managed 617, to overcome the great 268 shot by Bowlium’s James Tipton in their lone win. CASAMIGO’S Tequila man-aged to sweep past TIFCO Industries to climb to 9-1 as well. Vernon Adams 590 was high for the Tequila crew while Gary Duran topped TIFCO with 579. Keystone Lanes extended their overall lead with a 4-1 win over Alhambra Coin Center as Herbert Jones 238/600 paved the way, while Doug Kempt 234/608 countered for Al-hambra. J.A.T. moved into 5th place by taking down Herzog Insurance 4-1. Obviously, a very tough pair as only David Yamauchi with 582 managed to beat the league average 540.

SYSCO took down Blizz Yogurt 4-1 in another low scoring battle, as Charlie Kinstler led the pair and winners with 570, Greg Neuer was the best for Blizz with 548. The next match featured the night’s top in-dividual and team series bowler as Eddie Vandaniker shot 248/688 and got help from the wise choice of sub, Bobby Hornacek 244/632 to white wash Linder Insur-ance who was led by Kurt Arakaki 589. Los Altos Tro-phies continued the sweep parade as they pushed aside GJC Serices 5-0. Buddy Lucas with 610 was high for

the winners, David Gullett with 579 paced GJC. Zack Jellsey shot 631 to lead Forest Lanes to yet another sweep, as The Professional Approach, the defending champs remained winless for the round. They were led by the not so “Bad Ass” Frank Barefoot with 580. American Harvest Vodka took advantage of super sub Ramiro Garcia’s 575, and took down Pino’s Pizza 4-1. Leonard Ruiz with 566 topped the Pizza crew. On the final pair, Cook’s Bowling Supply pulled out 1 win thanks to Matt Mosley’s 221 Game 2.

Sidepot winners were Game 1- Eddie VanDaniker 248, Game 2 Bobby Campagnale 246, which also took down the coveted Financial Advisor’s pot, while Paul Varela got 2nd and $100 with 236. Game 3 Super Pot went to Ashkan “Not Trash Can” Tahvildaran 230. And in our other “honor” the True Anchor goes Mike Jen-nings 455.

We had two big winners from VEGAS this past weekend, Kevin Gagnon took the TAT Crown and the $20,000 that goes with it, and Bobby Campagnale fin-ished second to Steve Smith from San Diego, winning $5000 in the ABT Scratch Tournament at South Point this weekend. Next week will again narrow down the contenders, with each week, chances are slimmed by those who lose as we bowl position round each and every week. Yes, I made my unspectacular return to ac-tion, hoping to put together a back to back streak next week. Have a blessed week everyone, see you next Monday at Del Rio in Downey.
