Fire at Tolko Merritt Fire Rescue responded to a fire at Tolko around 1:30 saturday after- noon. Fire Chief Dave Tompkinson says a hydraulic oil tank was on fire. “Prior to firefighters arriving, the sprinkler system had activated. The sawmill employees had actioned the fire with extinguishers and a hose line,” says Tompkinson. The fire was inside the the plant, and spread to some machinery above. Tomkinson says, as the fire department was leaving, the sawmill was already get- ting back up and running. The cause of the fire is unknown. Source: cfjctoday.com Prescribed burn for Monck Prov. Park BC Parks is planning to conduct an 8- hectare prescribed burn in Monck Park, in an effort to restore the area’s ecosys- tem and reduce wildfire risks. The BC wildfire service will conduct the burning operations in mid- to late- March, depending on weather and site conditions. The project will proceed only if fire behaviour conditions are suitable and will allow for quick smoke dissipa- tion and low-to-moderate fire intensity. Trained wildfire crews will be onsite to carefully monitor the fire. smoke will be visible from nicola Lakeshore estates and residences west of the park near Monck Park Rd. smoke may also be visible from hwy 5A, but no highway closures are planned as a result of this burn. The goal is to mimic naturally-occur- ring ground fires and reduce the level of dead & combustible material in grass- land & open forest areas. Introducing fire to the park will also help protect riparian areas, trail beds and park facilities, as well as nearby residential communities and infrastructure. The removal of forest fuels helps re- duce the threat of interface wildfires. Pre- scribed fire can also discourage insect infestations and help fire-adapted plant species to reproduce.
