CHOOSING TARGET AUDIENCEFrom my target audience I found that there was a large market for both
rock and alternative music, with rock being slightly smaller in target audience, and other types of music barely hanging around 10%.
With this information I have chosen to go with a rock magazine because I do not know enough about alternative music and I do not personally like alternative types of music. I think that if I create a magazine with bands I personally enjoy the result will be of a higher quality, as I am inspired to do well by creating something I enjoy.
There are 2 main schools of rock, classic and ‘modern’, I have decided to go with classic because classic appeals to both modern rock fans and classic rock fans, whilst modern rock is often disliked by classic rock fans.
RESEARCHING CLASSIC ROCK BANDS
Researching classic rock bands would be important to me as I plan to imitate their style in multiple ways, so I took to Google to look at album covers and band logos
I found that typographic logos were common in these bands, so for my band it will likely be typography based as well, they also seem to be monotone in colour most of the time, so I will likely do something typographical-based rather than a complex logowhich features many coloursand design features
CLOTHING & PROPS
Bright, colourful psychedelic clothing is common I found in the few colour pictures I found. Because these bands existed when colour photography was only just becoming usable at this time, there were only a few pictures I could find that had the features I was looking for. Even when the colours were not exceedingly bright, they were at least non-standard. Another aspect was the type of clothes themselves. Either a plain buttoned shirt, or a buttoned shirt combined with a patterned overcoat was common.
Props is easy; classic rock is a guitar-centric music form, and there are guitars available to be used in the types of shots. I would like to use drums, however this may be difficult as setting them up on a photo set would be too time consuming and I do not think there are even any drums available.
BAND CAMERA SHOTS & LIGHTING
For this I just researched pictures of bands in action, and looked for common themes between them all. The first thing I found, as evidenced below is that high key black & white lighting of entire bands together was a common theme.I also found that long hair was common,
too. Fortunately I already have this aspect completed, so I should be well off in this aspect.
Camera-shot wise, mid-shots of bands together were quite common
