Dear Friends, A warm welcome to this our special Summer season brochure

which, among other things, highlights the forthcoming celebration

of a full 20 years of the Centre being “… in the service of healing,

peace and holistic wellbeing” here in Northern Ireland and beyond.

These have been 20 critical years in all our lives spanning, as they have done, the ‘pre’ and

the ‘post’ of the era of the Peace Process here in Northern Ireland, which was heralded by

that transformational moment of the Good Friday/ Belfast Agreement of 1998.

Saturday 18th to Saturday 25th of June is the special week of celebration. Preparations are at

an advanced stage and full details will go out from here in the near future.

Signs are that by the time celebration details are finalised much of the hard work which is

currently on-going, and in which so many of you are involved in one way or another, towards

consolidating Tara’s future for the next 20 plus years, will have come together in a positive

way in the context of the radically revised Deloitte Business Plan. We will keep you posted.

Meanwhile, we trust you will share our hope that the range of workshops on offer this term,

taken in conjunction with the other core services – counselling/ psychotherapy, art therapy,

meditation a way of life, yoga and the many other items listed throughout the brochure, -

does justice to a core belief of ours that, when it comes to “healing, peace and holistic

wellbeing” there is no question of “one size fits all.” The uniqueness of the person, together

with each one’s right and responsibility to discern the authentic trajectory of their own life’s

path, challenges us to provide diversity in our efforts to offer appropriate professional

support, not magic “fix it” pills, to those who wish to address their own life’s issues.

Finally, let us borrow a few recently penned words from that soulful poet Paul Muldoon

which inspire us personally and which we hope will do likewise for you:

“Passion and compassion (remain) our fascination”

May the blessings of this season of great hope fill your hearts,

Maura & Mary

2. SEMINARS AND WORKSHOPS

CHRONIC INFLAMMATORY ILLNESS AND THE GUT

Dr Aileen O’Kane, MD

More than 5,000 years ago Ayurveda, the ancient system of healing from India, taught that all illness begins in the gut. Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, reiterated this same belief 2,000 years ago. Today scientific research has ample evidence that supports this belief. Aileen poses the question: “When did modern medicine forget this basic fact?” She also asks: “Could illnesses such as diabetes, arthritis, asthma, rheumatoid arthritis, irritable bowel, psoriasis & eczema, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, obesity, heart disease, and a number of other

chronic inflammatory illnesses, which are so rampant in modern society, be linked to what is going on in our gut?” To this question, she herself answers with a resounding “Yes”.

Dr. Aileen O’ Kane qualified as a medical doctor in University College, Dublin, in 1970 and practised medicine until 1990 when she herself became ill. Through a growing awareness of what was going on in her own life, she came to realize that illness is a “dis-ease” of one’s whole being – mind, body and spirit. This led her to search for a more holistic medical model in the course of which she discovered Ayurveda. Ayurveda, which means “knowledge of life”, is about living in harmony with ourselves and with the natural world. Aileen studied Ayurveda in the USA, London and India and has been practising as a medical professional in this way since the year 2000.

In this seminar she will:

give an overview of Ayurveda to provide a backdrop to the scientific current information which she will share;

talk about the bacteria in our gut (our micro biome) and how they comprise 80% of the cells in our bodies and 70% of our immune system;

consider factors that disturb the balance of these bacteria and how this contributes towards illness;

talk about the many myths about nutrition that the food industry has been promoting over the last 40 years and how these have contributed to the modern inflammation epidemic;

explain the leaky gut and explore the gut/brain connection;

propose the changes that each of us can make in our diet and lifestyles to prevent and/or reverse inflammatory diseases in our bodies.

Dates: Saturday 16th April 2016 Time: 10.00am – 4.30pm (enrolment from 9.30am to 10am sharp) Cost: £30.00 (See Special Rates on page 14)

A LIFE OF MY OWN

Engaging Positively with Challenging Life Situations

Aileen Mc Gee

On Tuesday 17th November 2016 Aileen Mc Gee’s second book, A Life of Our Own, was launched by Omagh born journalist, author and columnist, Martina Devlin, here at the Tara Centre. In this book Aileen chronicles her 18 year long journey towards claiming a life of her own while at the same time relentlessly pursuing every known and unknown avenue towards ensuring a life of his own for her autistic son, Cian. The energy in the hall that night was truly inspiring as mother read key passages from her book while family, friends and the general public witnessed the relatively independent life she had secured for Cian. Following the book launch, Aileen offered a six week programme on the same theme here at the Tara Centre. Attendance at the course and evaluations completed at the end of the course encouraged us to offer it again during this Summer term. As before, in this six week programme participants will have an opportunity to consider 12 tried and tested stepping stones that can lead to an authentic and fulfilled life irrespective of the challenges which life can throw up at any time. Opportunities will be provided for course participants to explore in depth how to grasp the nuggets of wisdom distilled from Aileen’s own life experience, consider similar challenges life may be presenting for them and find ways in which they too can map out a life of their own. Dates: Wednesday 11th May – 15th June 2016 (inclusive 6 weeks) Time: 10.30am – 12:30pm (enrolment from 10.00am to 10.30am sharp) Cost: Contributions each week towards Tara Centre Sustainability

Aileen is an author and columnist with a background in psychology and counselling. She has worked therapeutically in both clinical and educational settings for over 25 years.

THE GREEN PLATFORM

Declan Coyle

Once again we welcome back Declan Coyle to present his extremely popular “The Green Platform” workshop at the Tara Centre. Declan’s eminently user-friendly way of managing thoughts, choices and all that life throws at us, in a way that transforms every aspect of our lives, is presented in the course of this workshop. It has proven to be simply life-changing and transformational for individuals, families and businesses worldwide. Using the imagery of the red platform, (negative thinking),

and a green platform, (positive thinking), Declan illustrates how “miracles happen” whenever one steps out of the little boat of one’s fears on the red platform and walks a new pathway “on water” to a world of joy, freedom and unconditional love on the green platform. In this two-day workshop participants will discover the treasure that has always been there, deep inside, in the form of their own gifts and talents, and they will learn to use these treasures to enrich the quality of their own lives, of the lives of others and in the service of the world. Declan is the author of the Number 1 best-selling book, The Green Platform, an innovative “inner software” methodology that has transformed the morale, productivity and profitability of companies across the globe. Declan is a Master Practitioner in NLP and a certified Enneagram Teacher. He also writes a weekly motivational column for Fit Magazine that is published with the Irish Independent.

Dates: Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th May 2016 Time: 10.00am – 4.00pm (enrolment from 9.30am to 10am sharp) Cost: £60.00 (See Special Rates on page 14)

BEING AN ADULT IN THE WORLD, RESOLVING OUR CHILDHOOD INSECURITIES

Jim Cogley Some of you may be among those who had booked for Jim Cogley’s seminar advertised for last November at this Centre.

If so, you will know that we had to cancel the event due to Jim’s illness at that time. Mercifully, he is now fully recovered and will be with us on the dates indicated below.

A psychotherapist and wood-turner with nearly thirty years’ experience in the field of healing, both personal and intergenerational, Jim brings a wisdom to his work which only those who engage with life in the raw can know and share.

In the course of this seminar Jim will explore in his own unique and insightful way childhood issues which may impact on personal and ancestral healing. He focuses on “getting the past out of the present” in order to restore hope for the future. The wood-turner, Jim enriches his presentations by using incredibly expressive symbols in wood which he himself has created. He is the author of several books and inspirational cards in the WOOD YOU BELIEVE series. Dates: Friday 10th June & Saturday 11th June 2016 Time: 10.00am – 4.00pm (enrolment from 9.30am to 10am sharp) Cost: £40.00 (See Special Rates on page 14)

THROUGH UNDERSTANDING TOWARDS RECONCILIATION:

IRELAND’S DECADE OF CENTENARIES CONSIDERED

Dr Éamon Phoenix

It is with delight that we welcome Dr Éamon Phoenix, Lecturer in History and Head of Life Long Learning at Stranmillis University College, Belfast, back to the Tara Centre. The really good news is that Dr Phoenix has committed to offering more than one programme at Tara between now and the end of the present calendar year (see page 21 of this brochure).

For starters, he will be with us in June to present an interactive one day seminar covering the

years from 1912-1916 in the context of the present Decade of Centenaries. Given the

Omagh venue, Éamon will reference key Tyrone figures active during those years. The remit

will also be broadened to include more widely known high-profile leaders and events such as

Carson, Unionism, Home Rule, the Easter Rising, the Battle of the Somme, etc.

We are confident that Éamon will lead us into this challenging arena with his intimate

knowledge of the subject from the perspective of both traditions and will provide us with an

opportunity to explore our past in a manner which will empower us to grow in mutual

understanding of, and respect for, our shared history on this Island.

The format of the day will include talks, excerpts from the Robert Kee TV series and

discussion groups.

Date: Saturday 25th June 2016 Time: 10.00am – 4.00pm (enrolment between 09.30am and 10.00am sharp) Cost: £20.00 (See Special Rates on page 14)

3. ON-GOING PROGRAMMES YOGA FOR BEGINNERS

Heather Kemps

Yoga is a very old tradition which has much to offer in today’s lifestyle, helping us to feel more peaceful in a chaotic world. It helps harmonise and balance the mind, body and emotions through using postures, breath and relaxation techniques. Yoga is for everyone. It helps to develop a stronger and more flexible body which can lead to health improvement in many ways. Relaxation is so important for health and well-being as it relieves the anxieties and frustrations of a stressful lifestyle. Those who practise yoga are advised to wear loose clothing and bring a blanket or sleeping bag.

NB: It is advisable that expectant mothers wait until after the 12th week of pregnancy before attending Yoga sessions.

The programme presenter, Heather Kemps, trained with the Yoga Fellowship of NI in 1997. She completed second stage teacher training with YTTC in 2000. Heather sees the practice of yoga as a tool to help individuals develop their own self-awareness, enabling them to feel more in control, leading to a more balanced and fulfilling life.

It is to sow seeds with tenderness and reap the harvest with joy,

COMPLEMENTARY THERAPIES

A special booklet on Complementary Therapies is available on request from Reception. In the event of the price as advertised being prohibitive in individual cases, a reduced fee will be considered by the Interim Centre Director on request. Failure to comply with this requirement will involve a cancellation fee of £15 for fee paying clients. Grant aided clients will forfeit one allocated treatment for failure to give adequate notice of cancellation.
