Quality Session Planning & Implementation
The focus of AYSO & the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) –
• Development Over Winning• Quality Training• Age Appropriate Training• Have Fun and Inspire Players
Quality Session Planning & Implementation
What is the purpose of a training session
(aka, practice)? • To improve each player’s
technical and tactical ability.• To enhance the team’s tactical
ability & minimize shortfalls.• To prepare for the next game
Quality Session Planning & Implementation
Overview of how to create a quality, age appropriate training session:
• Planning a Training Session• Preparing a Training Session • Performing (at training and at
game)• Evaluating (training and game)• Amending training• Re-evaluating!
Quality Session Planning & Implementation
For a training session to be successful a coach must:
Prepare –• How to prepare? • How do you know what to work
on?• What do you work on?
Quality Session Planning & Implementation
How do you know what to work on ?
At the first training session of the season use
the “Free Play” method to evaluate strengths
and weaknesses of each player and the team.
Why?
After the first training session your game analysis will determine what you train.
Why?
Quality Session Planning & Implementation
“Free Play”: Is used to observe the player’s and the team’s soccer
capabilities.
Free play describes the condition where individuals play with minimal restrictions on time or space.
Players are given general directions on what they should attempt to accomplish and then left on their own.
The players should play hard and stop when rest is warranted.
A coach’s observational powers will increase as they are forced to isolate individual action in a group.
Quality Session Planning & Implementation
Now you know what to work on.
How do you work on the team and individual weaknesses?
Create an Evaluation Chart for each player and
the team (Appendix G, p. 101 in the U12 manual).
What should the content of the evaluation chart
be?
It must be age appropriate!
Quality Session Planning & Implementation
Players age U-12 will experience: Attacking Objectives• Advance the ball• Score• Maintain Possession
Defending Objectives • Delay the opponents• Prevent Scoring• Regain Possession
Quality Session Planning & Implementation
How to achieve those objectives?
Principles of Play!
Attacking Principles Defending Principles
• Penetration Pressure (Delay)
• Support (Depth) Cover (Depth)
• Mobility Balance• Width
Compactness (concentration)
• Creativity Control & Restraint (composure)
Quality Session Planning & Implementation
By age U-12 all players should have been introduced to all technical skills required to play the game.
What’s the problem for the coach?
New Players!
But that is a good thing!
Quality Session Planning & Implementation
Player Evaluations (Charting): Coaches should also evaluate each
player’s: • Attitude • Work Rate• Coach-ability
After the first training session and the first game you should know a lot more about the players than you did and you will be able to plan for future practices more efficiently.
Quality Session Planning & Implementation
Planning The Training Session How long should a training session last?
The activity portion of any training session should be the same as the length of the game.
The key word in this statement is “Activity”!!
No training session should be longer then 90
minutes. Players of ANY age group cannot physically and mentally perform longer that.
Quality Session Planning & Implementation
Training Plan
Before each training session you should write a training plan.
• What should this plan contain?
This plan should contain all the activities that you want to do along with the time to be spent on each activity.
All training sessions must be broken down into four parts.
They are:
1. Warm up
2. Small Sided Activity (Technical & tactical work)
3. Expand (build up) the small sided activity (Small sided game)
4. Small sided match & Cool down…
Quality Session Planning & Implementation
Warm-up
A correct and proper warm up is essential for the well being of the players.
It should also be used to prepare the athletes for the activity to be worked on.
If you are planning on working on passing, then the warm up should lead into the passing activity.
Quality Session Planning & Implementation
Warm-Up The warm up can be broken down into two major parts.
What are they? 1. Light activity to warm the muscles (free
play eg. 5 v 2, keep away, juggling). This activity should emphasize the theme of the training session and include ball work.
2. Dynamic stretching (appendix D, U12 manual or FIFA 11+)
Quality Session Planning & Implementation
Post warm-up?
Stage 2 of your session, will involve technical & tactical work, involving small-sided activity which includes the following aspects:
• More grid-based• Individual and pair work• Competition and teamwork• Can start 1 v 1 & build to 2v2, 3v3, etc.
Quality Session Planning & Implementation
What’s next?
Expand (build up) the small sided activity (small sided game) to create a match-like environment and involve the following aspects:
• Opposition (principles of attack & defense)• Directional play (1 large goal & other goals or
targets)• Expanded numbers (3v3 to 6v6, etc.)• Most game aspects (including age group laws)• This is the time for quick coaching moments
and the use of restrictions as needed.
Quality Session Planning & Implementation
Stage 4: Match-like activity/small-sided game
• Emphasize the training topic & other components of the game. Minimize restrictions and coaching moments.
• It’s time to let the game flow, and for the players to play (and for the coach to evaluate how well they apply your training!)
• Why a small sided game and not just scrimmage other teams?
Quality Session Planning & Implementation
Post Small sided game / match?
• Cool Down & review of what the goal of training was.
• Complement & encourage players.
• Give them something to practice at home for the game or next training session.
Quality Session Planning & Implementation
Post Cool Down?
Evaluate the Training Session!
Why is there a need to evaluate the training session?
Quality Session Planning & Implementation
Evaluating the Training SessionThe coach needs to know:
What worked?What didn’t?What did the players like?What they didn’t like?What kept their interest?What didn’t?What was too long?What wasn’t long enough?
Quality Session Planning & Implementation
Most important thing about evaluating the
training session?
Was the training used in the next game?
Next thing to do?...
Quality Session Planning & Implementation
Amend the Training Now is the time to decide what should
be changed for the next training session.
By using the evaluation form any necessary
adjustments can be made.
This leads us back to what?
